Kitakagaya is a district in the southwest of Osaka, Japan’s second largest metropolis. Once famous for ship-building, Kitakagaya has recently become known for its art. Young artists and other creators were attracted to the area to live and work in the town’s many empty buildings. A local real estate company realized that this could revitalize the area, and began supporting this influx of artists. Today, visitors flock to Kitakagaya for the pop art murals decorating its streets and the exciting events featuring giant installations in its old warehouses.

Cutting edge designer admires traditional techniques
(24 Oct 2010)
Osaka , August 19, 2010
1. Close-up of sketching by designer Toshiyuki Kita
2. Kita at his drawing board
2. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Toshiyuki Kita, Designer:
Its now 47 years since I began to work as a designer. I wanted to become a designer when I was very young.
3. Various of Kita at the drawing board
4. Pan right from furniture designed by Kita to Wakamaru care robot that he designed in conjunction with Mitsubushi Heavy Industries
5. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Toshiyuki Kita, Designer:
The idea of design really impressed me at that time. It was because I believed that through design you could be the first to see the future.
6. Wakamaru robot swivels, moves out of frame; Dodo and Wink chairs in background
7. Pull focus on display of pewter containers designed by Kita
8. Various of designs influenced by traditional Japanese crafts, including Yosegi-Zaiku marquetry and Arita-yaki porcelain
9. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Toshiyuki Kita, Designer:
A little after I began my career as a designer I met a craftsman, a paper maker.
Echizen, Ishikawa prefecture, August 12, 2010
10. Various of craftsman making sheets of washi (Japanese paper) at Echizenwashi museum
Osaka, Japan, August 19, 2010
11. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Toshiyuki Kita, Designer:
When I visited this craftsman's home village I found that despite over 1,000 years of pursuing this industry, craftsmen in the village were about to give up. The industry as a whole had been mechanised. Making paper by hand had fallen behind the times and it was expensive. No one wanted to buy what they were producing and they thought that their industry had come to an end.
Echizen, Ishikawa prefecture, Japan, August 12, 2010
12. Various of traditional paper-making process
Osaka, August 19, 2010
13. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Toshiyuki Kita, Designer:
There were only five craftsmen left in the village at that time. That was in 1969. I thought to myself, as a designer, if I could make something using the paper that they made it might help revive the industry.
14. Various of lighting project using washi paper including the Tako and Pao lights.
Echizen, Ishikawa Prefecture, August 12, 2010
15. Wide of Kita and Kazuya Osada walking into Osada's workshop
16. Osada making a large washi paper screen with a technique developed by his grandfather.
17. Wide of Osada and employee moving a completed screen.
18. Toshiyuki Kita and Osada examining and talking about the screen
19. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Osada Kazuya, Chief Executive Officer of Osada Seishi Sho Company, which specialises in making fusuma sliding doors:
Our company has always produced fusuma but demand has declined. We produce around 10 percent of what we did when I joined the company (30 years ago).
20. Various of Toshiyuki Kita and his daughter Tomoko discussing prototypes designed by Osada and potential of bringing them to market
Osaka, August 19, 2010
21. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Toshiyuki Kita, Designer:
I think that high quality products that come from this historical tradition are not just part of Japanese cultural heritage but are part of the world's cultural heritage. It isn't just Japan, many other countries possess similar cultural property. I think that they should be regarded as part of the world's cultural heritage as well. For this reason I think it is very important that Japan's traditional industries are brought back to life.
22. Various of Toshiyuki Kita designs
LEAD IN:
Globalisation, lifestyle changes and the rise of cheap mass produced goods has led to the decline of many of Japan's traditional industries.
But Toshiyuki Kita, one of Japan's most celebrated contemporary designers, has spent a life time trying to reverse the trend.

JAPANTRIP「Asukayama Park」Kita, Tokyo 【飛鳥山公園】
In the early eighteenth century, shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune planted many cherry trees in the area and opened up the land for the enjoyment of the Edokko or citizens of Tokyo. The park was formally established, alongside Ueno Park, Shiba Park, Asakusa Park, and Fukagawa Park, in 1873 by the Dajō-kan, as Japan's first public parks. In 1998, three museums were opened inside the park, designed by AXS Satow: the Kita City Asukayama Museum (北区飛鳥山博物館), the Shibusawa Memorial Museum (渋沢史料館), and the Paper Museum (紙の博物館).

Journal With Me | Making Original Notebooks with Blue Collar Craft Japan | ほぼ日手帳 2019 | Rainbowholic
Hi everybody! A few weeks ago, we went to Blue Collar Craft (Kita Toda, Saitama) to experience making our own journal from scratch! It was my first time to use a machine to sew the pages of the notebook together & it was fun! Papier Platz also brought the upcoming Mizutama clear stamps and we had a really fun time customizing an extra notebook haha~
The company is actually the first ever in Japan to make an industrial sewing machine specially made for paper / bookbinding. After making our own journal, I’m not sure anymore if I can use it haha.

Tohaku’s Transformation: The Evolution of Techniques and Style in the 16th Century Master
Tohaku’s Transformation: The Evolution of Techniques and Style in the 16th Century Master
One of the most impressive characteristics of Hasegawa Tohaku's artistry was his unparalleled ability to master so many different styles of painting, mediums and techniques. Throughout his career he painted scrolls, decorated sliding doors (fusuma), and freestanding multipanel screens (byobu); Buddhist icons and portraits, as well as bird-and-flower paintings, and landscapes in ink-and-wash, polychrome, and gilt. His proficiency in the complex techniques for combining colors with gold, possibly learned from members of the Tosa and Kano schools is particularly awestriking.

✚ Watch my WW2 in the Pacific PLAYLIST:
This Documentary shows the history of World War II operations in the Pacific, from the fall of Corregidor to Japanese surrender ceremonies in Tokyo Bay. The film concentrates on the Allied campaign against the Japanese in the Philippines of 1944-1945. The video contains captured Japanese films as well.
The Pacific War
The Pacific War, sometimes called the Asia-Pacific War, was the Pacific theatre of World War II, which was fought in the Pacific Ocean, its islands, and in East Asia. It includes the Pacific Ocean theatre, the South West Pacific theatre, the South-East Asian theatre, and the Second Sino-Japanese War (including the 1945 Soviet-Japanese conflict).
It is generally considered the Pacific War began on 7/8 December 1941 with the invasion of Thailand for the invasion of British Malaya, and the attack on Pearl Harbor in the United States' Territory of Hawaii by the Empire of Japan. Some authors consider that the conflict in Asia dates back to 7 July 1937, beginning with the Second Sino-Japanese War between the Empire of Japan and the Republic of China, or possibly 19 September 1931, beginning with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria.
The Pacific War saw the Allied powers pitted against the Empire of Japan, the latter briefly aided by Thailand and to a much lesser extent by its Axis allies, Germany and Italy. The war culminated in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and other large aerial bombing attacks by the United States Army Air Forces, accompanied by the Soviet invasion of Manchuria on 8 August 1945, resulting in the surrender of Japan and the end of fighting during World War II on 15 August 1945. The formal and official surrender of Japan occurred aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945.
Japanese Threat to Australia
In late 1941, as Japan struck at Pearl Harbor, most of Australia's best forces were committed to the fight against Hitler in the Mediterranean Theatre. Australia was ill-prepared for an attack. While still calling for reinforcements from Churchill, the Australian Prime Minister John Curtin called for American support on 27 December 1941.
Australia had been shocked by the speedy collapse of British Malaya and Fall of Singapore in which around 15,000 Australian soldiers became prisoners of war. Curtin predicted that the battle for Australia would now follow. The Japanese established a major base in the Australian Territory of New Guinea in early 1942. On 19 February, Darwin suffered a devastating air raid, the first time the Australian mainland had been attacked.
U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt ordered his commander in the Philippines, General Douglas MacArthur, to formulate a Pacific defence plan with Australia in March 1942. Curtin agreed to place Australian forces under the command of MacArthur, who became Supreme Commander, South West Pacific.
The Japanese Conquest of the Philippines in 1941--1942
The Philippines Campaign of 1941--1942 or the Battle of the Philippines 1941--1942 was the invasion of the Philippines by Japan in 1941--1942 and the defense of the islands by Filipino and United States forces.
The defending forces outnumbered the Japanese invaders by 3 to 2, but were a mixed force of non-combat experienced regular and newly created units; the Japanese used their best first-line troops at the outset of the campaign. The Japanese 14th swiftly overrun most of Luzon.
The Japanese high command, believing they had won the campaign, made a strategic decision to advance by a month their timetable of operations in Borneo and Indonesia, withdrawing their best division and the bulk of their airpower in early January 1942. This, coupled with the decision of the defenders to withdraw into a defensive holding position in the Bataan Peninsula, enabled the Americans and Filipinos to successfully hold out for four more months.
Allied Campaign Against the Japanese in the Philippines of 1944--1945
The Liberation of the Philippines was the American and Filipino campaign to defeat and expel the Imperial Japanese forces occupying the Philippines. The Liberation of the Philippines commenced with amphibious landings on the eastern Philippine island of Leyte on October 20, 1944, and hostilities in a small part of the Philippines continued through the end of the war in August 1945.

Shigeru Ban: Emergency shelters made from paper
Long before sustainability became a buzzword, architect Shigeru Ban had begun his experiments with ecologically-sound building materials such as cardboard tubes and paper. His remarkable structures are often intended as temporary housing, designed to help the dispossessed in disaster-struck nations such as Haiti, Rwanda or Japan. Yet equally often the buildings remain a beloved part of the landscape long after they have served their intended purpose. (Filmed at TEDxTokyo.)

Japanese Knife & Sword City: Seki Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Traveling for KNIVES and SWORDS! The Japanese knife is quite simply the best in the world. The place best known for them is Seki (関市) in Gifu where Japanese Samurai swords have been forged for over 700 years. That tradition continues today in its knives and cutlery. They're perfect.
Following World War 2, the city changed from forging the katana to producing some of the world's best knives and cutlery. So, I ended up at Seki Station recently -- to buy the best knife in Japan! Maybe even a samurai sword, too.
In this episode, John travels to Seki city in Gifu prefecture to check out the CUTLERY FESTIVAL known as the HAMONO MATSURI (刃物まつり) in Japan. Now only will you find over 43 knife makers selling their best at discounted prices, you'll see the most unique knives anywhere as well as Chanbara performances (Samurai Sword Fight Acting).
The most unique part of the Hamono Festuval is an authentic demonstration of traditional sword forging using Tamahagane Steel.
HOW MUCH IS A REAL SAMURAI SWORD?
They start at 400,000 to 600,000 Yen ($4,000 to $6000) and can go up to $20,000! We'll see swords being made in Seki.
HOW TO BUY A JAPANESE KNIFE:
There many things to consider such as the type of steel, the type of knife, it's balance and of course, it's price.
WHEN IS SEKI'S HAMONO CUTLERY FESTIVAL ( 刃物まつり ) ?
2019 October 12th and 13th (Saturday & Sunday)
URL: (English available)
* It takes place on the second weekend of October annually.
The knife I bought:
Mcusta ZANMAI Classic Pro Damascus Flame
Santoku 180mm ¥15,000 Festival Price
Hida Beef (Hida Gyu 飛騨牛) is one of Japan's top wagyu beef and worth trying in Gifu or the Nagoya area.
HOW TO GET TO SEKI:
Best is to rent a car. It's easiest to get around this way because trains don't leave often in the countryside and many places like Monet's Pond can be accessed only by infrequent buses.
By Train, it's a short and scenic ride from Nagoya Station or Gifu Station.

THANK YOU!
I want to say ARIGATOU GOZAIMASU to Seki city and the wonderful people who helped me make this special episode. If you are interested in Seki, please check out their sightseeing page and feel free to contact them. They really want you to enjoy their hometown! -john
What is Damascus Steel?
Mr. Walter Sorrells made an excellent video on YouTube explaining it. I also learned more about knife making from his channel.

50 Facts About Japan
Get 2 months free with Skillshare:
Lists of facts about Japan are almost always half misleading or straight up inaccurate, and half basic facts that everyone already knows. (Did you know JAPANESE VENDING MACHINES?!) So we've been trying to collect interesting facts about Japan that are actually true for years, and we finally reached 50!
This video took the most time to make out of all our videos so far--more than 250 hours!! We put weeks into researching facts, tossing ones that either weren't true or as interesting as we first thought, and verifying the necessary ones with statistics from official sources (do you know the pain… of trying to translate 100+ page government reports…). Those sources are in the description box. We called agencies to ask them questions directly. We visited museums. We drove all over the place and filmed a lot of B roll (oh so much B roll). So here it is, basically everything we know about Japan (well, maybe not everything). Some of you may recognize a couple facts in here that we've talked about in past videos! I really hope you guys enjoy this video!!
Thank you so much to all the people who upload images, sounds and EVEN VIDEO OF A RARE CAT HOLY CRAP to Wikipedia!! You’re the real MVP. There were a lot of things there was little possibility of us ever being able to capture on film ourselves. Thank you to you guys for being patient with us as we take our sweet time making these videos. And thank you to Skillshare for sponsoring this and helping us pay for groceries while we spent an entire month working on a single video. orz
