Short film produced, written and presented by Simon Peter Sutherland. Filmed on location at Paphos Cyprus in 2012.
The Castle/Fort is generally identified as Paphos Castle. It was originally a Byzantine fort built to protect the harbour.
The original structure was built in the 13th century by the Lusignans & destroyed by the Venetians in 1570 during the Ottoman invasion & rebuilt after they captured the island.
Sources claim it was used for storage of salt not sugar & was also used for protection & prison cells.

The inclusion of the Kato Pafos archaeological site in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1980 was the starting point for the creation of a General Plan whose aim would be primarily to protect and maintain the archaeological remains, as well as to promote them and provide comprehensive information to visitors. Kato Pafos archaeological Park includes sites and monuments from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages, while most remains date to the Roman period. The marvellous mosaic floors of four Roman villas from the impressive epicentre of the finds. The complex includes other important monuments, such as the Asklipieion, the Odeion, the Agora, the Saranta Kolones (Forty Columns) Fortress, the Limeniotissa Ruins of early Christian Basilica and the Tombs of the Kings.
Археологический парк Па́фоса — археологический музей под открытым небом в городе Пафосе, близ гавани Като-Пафоса. Основные объекты археологического парка — раскопки античного города Неа-Пафоса. Известен большим комплексом хорошо сохранившихся мозаик римского времени, открытых в 1960-х годах. В южной части парка находятся развалины средневековой крепости Саранта-Колонес. На территории парка находится также развалины других сооружений II века н. э. — агоры, одеона и храм Асклепия. Раскопки на территории археологического парка начаты в 1960-х годах и продолжаются по сей день[1][2]. Старая часть Пафоса, важной составляющей которой является археологический парк, входит в список Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО[3].

The Paphos Castle or Paphos Fort is located at the Kato Paphos harbour and is considered to be one of the most famous attractions in Paphos. It is built on the ancient wave breaker on the west side.
The Paphos Castle was originally a byzantine fortress which was built in order to protect the port. It is a Frankish tower inside a casing of the Venetian period. After its destruction it was rebuilt by the Ottomans during 1592 A.D, as the relevant inscription stated on top of the entrance of the castle. Older, byzantine fortifications also seem to have existed in the same position.

THE WHOLE TOWN OF PAFOS IS INCLUDED IN THE OFFICIAL UNESCO LIST OF CULTURAL AND NATURAL TREASURES OF THE WORLD HERITAGE. WHEREVER ONE TREADS IN PAFOS ONE COMES ACROSS ITS GLORIOUS HISTORY. TODAY IT IS A GROWING HARBOUR TOWN, BUT IN HELLENISTIC AND ROMAN TIMES IT WAS THE CAPITAL OF CYPRUS.
CLOSE TO THE WATERSIDE RESTAURANTS AT THE HARBOUR LIES PAPHOS FORT. IT WAS BUILT BY THE TURKS IN 1592 ON THE SITE OF AN EARLIER, RUINED MEDIAEVAL CASTLE. INSIDE THERE ARE ROOMS ONCE USED AS DUNGEONS WHILST THE MAIN ROOM IS OCCASIONALLY USED FOR EXHIBITIONS.
THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF KATO PAFOS INCLUDES AREAS AND MONUMENTS FROM PREHISTORIC TIMES UP TO AND INCLUDING MIDDLE AGES, WITH MOST REMAINS DATING TO THE ROMAN PERIOD. THE REMARKABLE MOSAIC FLOORS OF FOUR VILLAS OF THE ROMAN PERIOD ARE THE EPITOME OF ALL THESE FINDINGS - HOUSE OF AION, HOUSE OF THESEUS AND HOUSE OF DIONYSOS. Paphos Castle at the harbour, Cyprus
Paphos Castle is located on the edge of Paphos harbour. It was originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbour. It was then rebuilt by the Lusignans in the thirteenth century after being destroyed in the earthquake of 1222. In 1570 it was dismantled by the Venetians. After capturing the island, the Ottomans restored and strengthened it. Throughout the ages it has seen many uses. It has served as a fortress, a prison and even a warehouse for salt during the British occupation of the island. More recently the castle serves as a backdrop to the annual open air Paphos cultural festival which takes place in September.
It was declared a listed building in 1935 and represents one of the most distinctive landmarks of the city of Paphos. Several archaeological excavations have taken place to investigate its past

Walking in PAPHOS / Cyprus - Harbor to Lighthouse Beach - 4K 60fps (UHD)
A long walk around Paphos starting from the harbor where we visit the Medieval Castle of Paphos. Heading back to town we pass along the Bar street which is quiet during the day in winter.
Some jogging follows through suburbian Paphos towards Kings Avenenue and Lighthouse beach. The sun already is down with a nice atmosphere on this romantic beach. We end the walk seeing the Medieval Castle again from the beach.
