Diving in Raja Ampat at Papua Paradise Eco Resort
In this week's video we're diving in Raja Ampat and staying in beautiful and luxurious overwater bungalows at Papua Paradise Eco Resort.
We were invited to stay at this hotel but we weren't told that we had to write or create anything positive about it, but we both agreed that it's the best hotel we've ever stayed at.
Sunsets over the water while sharks jump on the horizon, spectacular diving, great food, towering waterfalls and friendly people, Raja Ampat is easily one of our favourite travel destinations to date.
Check out this video to learn more about what we got up to on this epic trip to Indonesia.
Special Thanks to Papua Paradise Eco Resort and Lotus Hotels for making this whole trip possible.

Shark feeding at eco resort Papua Diving, Raja Ampat, West Papua
Black tip reef sharks are fed every morning from the jetty at Sorido Bay, one of two eco resorts run by Papua Diving in Raja Ampat, West Papua.
This is Raja Ampat (4k) - dive into the dream of biodiversity
Breathtaking dives in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Kri Island, Indonesian coral reefs. As part of Coral Triangle Raja Ampat in West Papua has the highest biodiversity and the most colorful reefs on the planet, around 75% of the world’s coral species live here.
The size, maturity and healthiness of corals in this region is insane! A large part of the marine life in Raja Ampat is protected by 7 Marine Protected Areas (MPA's).
Raja Ampat is an archipelago of over 1500 small islands, including the four main islands of: Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo.
We started our trip in Amsterdam (The Netherlands), 2 flight transfers, 2 boat transfers and +30 hours later we arrived at Kri Island at Kri Eco Resort + Papua Diving for 10 days. Together with my daughter, Isabelle, we made 22 dives at the most beautiful dive sites there are.
All the dive sites are 5-25 minutes from Kri Island: Kri Eco Jetty, Chicken Bay, Mikes Point (!!), Blue Magic, Sardines, Sapokren Jetty, Melissa’s Garden (!!), Chicken Reef, Sorido Wall, Friwenbonda, Citrus Reef, Cape Kri and a lot more!
We stayed on Kri Island, at Kri Eco Resort. Kri Eco Resort is located in the center of the Raja Ampat Marine park at Kri Island. Papua Diving provides guided dives for Kri Eco Resort and (sister resort) Sorido Bay Resort. The local Papuan dive guides of Papua Diving are the best experienced dive guides in Raja Ampat.
Raja Ampat has more than 1000 species of fish, 540 species of coral and 700 species of mollusk. Predatory fish such as Barracudas, Blacktip Reef Sharks and Whitetip Reef Sharks are fully present. Large Oceanic Manta rays are attracted to the rich plankton waters. Schools of fish are everywhere and sometimes a bait ball can be seen. Beside the beauty marinelife the Kri’s forests are rich in birdlife and reptiles.
A special part of the marine park are the Mangroves at Hidden Bay (6:06), they offer critical nursing environments for juveniles of fish species. World's largest amount of mangrove coverage can be found in Indonesia. The Mangroves where one of the highlight’s of this trip!
During our stay we made excursions to Fam Islands, Hidden Bay and The Passage, they are the very definition of paradise.
- (7:00) Fam Islands are a group of islands in the Raja Ampat Archipelago. White limestone cliffs plunge into the sea. Ultramarine blue lagoons are nestled next to monumental pinnacles and untouched beaches.
- (6:06) Hidden Bay has a mangrove system of clear mirror-still blue water, where soft corals grow on the roots of mangrove trees. Rising above the foliage hornbills and parrots swoop between the trees. Hidden Bay is a complex network of interconnected water channels and lakes.
- (7:23) The Passage lies between the island of Gam and Waigeo. It can be described as river flowing between the two islands. The nutrient rich waters that are drawn through by the tides feed a vast wealth of marine biodiversity. Above water the sheer limestone cliffs make this a place excessively beautiful.
Places like this are sensitive to climate change. It's frightening to see how many people close their eyes for climate change. Climate change and a decrease of biodiversity are caused by overpopulation. Overpopulation is the main cause of most urgent problems in the world.

The BBC Cuttlefish in Raja Ampat, Indonesia, Diving with Papua Diving | Sony A7rii
This video is about my encounter with a friendly cuttlefish at Sorido Bay, while we were staying at Sorido Bay Resort of Papua Diving in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia in December 2018.
I named this cuttlefish The BBC Cuttlefish because a BBC crew spent several months filming a cuttlefish at this place, and, as such, I assumed it was the same cuttlefish. From its behaviour, it was clear that this cuttlefish got used to be filmed, and it was performing in front of my camera for more than 10 minutes, until I decided to say goodbye to it.

What is the difference between Papua and Papua New Guinea?
New Guinea is an island to the north of the Australian mainland, but south of the equator. ... Politically, the western half of the island comprises two provinces of Indonesia: Papua and West Papua. The eastern half forms the mainland of the country of Papua New Guinea.

Best diving place on earth? Raja Ampat (scuba diving vlog Papua, Indonesia)
Best diving place on earth? scuba diving vlog Raja Ampat, Papua.
Located in Indonesia, west of the island of Papua New Guinea, Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, is a remote archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands.
Yendebabo homestay will be our place to stay for the next days. In Raja Ampat there ar 3 options for accomodation: Liveaboards, dive resorts os homestays. With the first two being utterly expensive, the homestays is the only place for normal mortals to stay. Even so, don't expect backpacker prices.
The only way to get to those remote islands is with a ferry from Sorong to the island's only town- Waisai. There we will be picked up by motorboat by our host.
First we need to change some money, because the 100 USD per person we had to pay as an entry ticket to the whole area left us without cash.
Finding someone who is willing to change us money involves a scooter ride and a walk through the smelliest market We've ever seen- and that's the place our host is buying food for us!
There are very little and remote human settlements and most of the island are inhabitated.
The homestays are eco-resorts built using traditional materials owned by the local villagers with basic rooms and affordable prices. The hosts are staying nearby, are cooking for you and are taking you around by boat, the only get-around posibbility. The bungalows or tents are all on the beach and most of the homestays have their own house-reef. Exactly our case. So first thing next day we jump in for some great snorkeling. Finding Nemo!!!!
Food at homestays is quite basic and quite a surprise every time.. but with rice, cabbage and water spinach you can't be wrong!
The main reason for coming here is diving. Staying at homestays guarantees you cheaper dives , but the gear can be old and , well, sometimes you have to have gouts to dive with what you get. Not our case, of course!
Unfortunately our main underwater camera got broken during day 1, so our underwater footage is taken with a cheap actioncam... so sorry bout that, folks!
The Raja Ampat islands are remote and relatively undisturbed by humans and the marine life here is the highest recorded on Earth. It's arguably the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world.
The high marine diversity in Raja Ampat is strongly influenced by its position between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as coral and fish larvae are more easily shared between the two oceans.
1,508 fish species, 537 coral species and 699 mollusk species, the variety of marine life is staggering.
It's the paradise for divers, but due to the currents and sometimes limited visibility not for beginners.
Between dives you can to find small islands just for yourself! Bye bye until next year!!!
The most pictesque spot in Raja Ampat is Pyaniemo... a long boat ride until there but the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. Be careful, gas is very expensive so it won't be cheap to get around by motorboat!

Jumping Ship! Exploring Raja Ampat
This week we abandon 'Double Trouble' to spend time on another boat.
We fly from Auckland to Sorong in West Papua and move onboard the Indonesian Siren dive liveaboard boat. .
We meet up with our friends Penny, Peter and trip directors Ed and Shu for 11 days of absolutely awesome diving around the Raja Ampat Archipelago.
We dive with sharks, Mantas, turtles, barracuda, bat-fish and octopus to name a few. There are too many fish to mention, let alone count!.
We also sadly witness the huge plastic problem affecting our oceans, even in this remote part part of the world.
After 32 spectacular dives, we say a sad farewell to old and new friends and travel back to Auckland, where we resume work on our outstanding boat projects on Double Trouble.

About us :
Hi there ! We are Jo and Rob, a slightly crazy husband and wife team, who decided on a whim to sell up and set sail . We had no prior sailing experience when we bought out 40ft catamaran 'Double Trouble' , but hey, mere details right? We moved onboard in January 2017 and have been learning ever since. We love our life , both on and under the oceans. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment ,so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. No fishing rods for us . Join us for fun and games as we set off around the world at walking pace.

Max Ammer, Raja Ampat and the richest reefs in the world.
Last year we took a group of competition winners out to Indonesia for the Suunto D5 photo shoot to produce inspirational content. We had never explored these waters before and we soon saw the fruits of hard work. It was to say, nothing less than inspiring and the story behind this special location is just as wonderful.
Max Ammer, founder of Papua Diving and two Eco Resorts, Sorido Bay and Kri Eco Resort shows us why these incredible projects are more than just places to stay and enjoy the unique ecosystems.
The past 30 years has seen the development of a conservation project unlike no other. The local team have put the protection of the flourishing ecosystem at the forefront of their priorities and this has proven to be a wise move as the results of hard work, careful long-term planning and execution can be seen in the thriving fish and coral counts in this rare case where the reefs are getting richer.
Watch the video as Suunto delves deeper into the man behind the richest reefs in the world and visit the Suunto blog now to read more.
