The Paradesi Synagogue is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations, located in Kochi, Kerala, in South India. Constructed in 1567, it is one of seven synagogues of the Malabar Yehudan or Yehudan Mappila people or Cochin Jewish community in the Kingdom of Cochin. Paradesi is a word used in several Indian languages, and the literal meaning of the term is foreigners, applied to the synagogue because it was built by Sephardic or Spanish-speaking Jews, some of them from families exiled in Aleppo, Safed and other West Asian localities. It is also referred to as the Cochin Jewish Synagogue or the Mattancherry Synagogue.
The synagogue is located in the quarter of Old Cochin known as Jew Town, and is the only one of the seven synagogues in the area still in use. The complex has four buildings. It was built adjacent to the Mattancherry Palace temple on the land given to the Malabari Yehuden or Yehuden Mappila community by the Raja of Kochi, Rama Varma. The Mattancherry Palace temple and the Mattancherry synagogue share a common wall.

The Lone Caretaker Of Kochi's Centuries Old Jewish Synagogue | Unique Stories From India
The caretaker of a 450-year-old Synagogue worries about the future of the Jewish community in Kochi. Joseph Elias Josephai (affectionately known as Babu), is one of the few members of the Jewish community in Kochi who still remain in the city. After the formation of the state of Israel in 1948, a large number of Cochin Jews (also called Malabar Jews) migrated back to the holy land. As a result, there are now as few as 27 Jews left in the city of Kochi. With no one to care for the Kadavumbhagom Synagogue, Babu has taken it upon himself to manage the security and upkeep of the Synagogue. Lamenting the future of the Jewish community in the city, Babu is looking to international Jewish trusts to help ensure that the Synagogue is maintained after his death.

Celebrating Hanukkah at the Paradesi Synagogue, Kochi, India
On the fourth night of Hanukkah in 2011 we were in Kochi, India, home of the Paradesi Synagogue. The building is over 450 years old and the community dates back much longer than that. It was an incredible opportunity to celebrate the holiday in a special way.
Prior to the Friday night services we lit the menorah, saying the traditional prayers and also singing Ma'oz Tzur (מעוז צור) as the oil lamps burned.

Paradesi Synagogue [ Kochi, Kerala, India ]
Mattancherry in Kochi is most known for the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth, the Paradesi Synagogue. Built in 1568,this synagogue attracts numerous visitors to this day. It adds to the area's quaint charm and is a great symbol of the love and harmony that exists in the community. Paradesi literally translates to foreigner in most Indian languages. Many of the original members of the community hailed from Kodungalloor, the Middle East and Europe. One step into its divine halls leaves a person enthralled with the rare antiques on display. The chandeliers and lamps sparkle alongside the natural sunlight that flows in through its large windows. These glass chandeliers date back to the 19th century when they were imported from Belgium. The hand-painted blue willow patterned tiles are architectural marvels in themselves. They were brought here from Canton in China by Jewish businessman Ezekiel Rahabi in the 18th century. The centre of the room has a pulpit with brass rails. The Synagogue is also famous for its carved teak ark. It contains four scrolls of the Torah that have been encased in silver and gold. Two gold crowns, special gifts from the Kings of Cochin and Travancore, lie here as well. One can also view special 4th century copper plates gifted by the King of Cochin. These contain inscriptions in Malayalam describing the special privileges granted to the Jewish Community by the King. Another interesting artefact is a special oriental rug gifted to the community by the last king of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie. The Synagogue is open every day except Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays.

Mattancherry (Malayalam: മട്ടാഞ്ചേരി) is the western part of city of Kochi, India. It is said that the name Mattancherry is drawn from Ancherry Mattam, a Namboodiri illam which then the foreign traders pronounced it as Matt-Ancherry, gradually became Mattancherry. It is about 9 km from Ernakulam town. There are frequent bus and boat services to Mattancherry from Ernakulam town. The boats start from Main Boat Jetty near Subash Park at Ernakulam.
Mattancherry is a part of Ernakulam District in Kerala, India.It is a tourist destination. It is surrounded by the backwaters of Arabian Sea.Mattancherry was the first trade hub of the present district.Mattancherry is populated by people from various walks of life and various parts of India & Abroad. There are people who have come and settled in Mattancherry from Goa, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and so on.
Earlier Mattancherry was the trade link to Ernakulam. Main Trade was on spices such as pepper and turmeric. Tea is also traded. Mattancherry deteriorated mainly since the porters working at various firms had some unaccounted trouble with the Merchants. Slowly the traders moved to Ernakulam as Mattancherry proved to be costly. Mattancherry is also home to the Paradesi Synagogue (India's oldest functioning synagogue, where the ticket-seller, Yaheh Hallegua, is the last female Paradesi Jew of child-bearing age). Mattancherry Palace Museum, Mattacherry Pazhayannur Royal temple and Palliarakkavvu temple, Ram Mandir, Gowd Saraswat Brahmin samaj temples including the Venkatraman temple and a Jain Temple (known as MahajanWadi to localites)and Mosques. Mattancherry Palace Museum hosts different weapons such as swords, spears and various other artilleries such as cannon used to protect the borders from invaders in the historic ages. The museum also hosts various paintings and murals. Near the museum, a private bus depot is also present. Close to the Bus Depot there is a Boat Jetty, where we get boats to Ernakulam, Fort Cochin and Willington Island. There is also Bazaar (Market) where we get to buy different spices and articles used interior decorations.
Mattancherry is famous for having Jew Town in its heart. This is a historical part of India, where the ancient Jews started their trading. This neighborhood is now famous for antique showrooms. Jew Palace and the Jewish synagogue are two famous landmarks.

The Paravur Synagogue aka Parur Synagogue is the one of largest and most complete among the Jewish synagogues in Kerala, located in North Paravur (Parur). It is currently non-operational as a synagogue for worship. However, it has been renovated by the Government of Kerala and is now open to public visits as the Kerala Jews History Museum.
Jewish people (Malabar Jews) had been arriving in Kerala since 1st millennia BC for trading, and their communities were mostly settled around today's Kodungallur region (which was then a Roman trading port named Muziris) and Kollam. They received royal patronage and special rights from the local Chera kings such as Cheraman Perumal and established Synagogues at their respective settlements for public worship.This was documented in the copper plates dated 10th century AD issued by Bhaskara Ravi Varman to the Jewish community leader Joseph Rabban.
In the 14th century AD, after the Periyar Flood of 1341 (that also caused a Tsunami, according to some sources , the community had to relocate to nearby towns such as Paravur, Chendamangalam and Kochi. Memories of this incident were preserved by oral tradition through traditional songs in Jewish Malayalam.[
The Paravur Synagogue is among the oldest Synagogues that still exist in Kerala and is also the largest Synagogue complex. The current synagogue was built in 1615 AD at the Jewish street of Paravur and very close to the Paravur Market where the Jewish community had settled and worked as traders. However, traditional accounts hint at a much older heritage, indicating that it was built on top of the ruins of an older synagogue dated 1165 AD.
Although the community lived peacefully throughout their history among the locals, there were conflicts due to foreign invaders such as Mysore Kingdom (during the Malabar raids led by Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan during the 18th century) and European colonizers such as Portuguese and Dutch during 16th and 17th centuries.
According to a traditional Jewish Malayalam song, the synagogue was put to fire in 1662, most likely by the Portuguese, at around the same time when the Paradesi Synagogue near Fort Kochi was also burnt.
After the modern State of Israel was established in 1948, the Paravur Jews started to make Aliyah.As of 1949, there were about three hundred Jews still living in Paravur, but most of them immigrated to Israel in large numbers by the mid 1950s.By 1970s, the public worship at the Synagogue ceased as the minyan (the quorum or minimum number of 10 Jewish adults required to conduct worship) could not be met and the Synagogue largely remained unattended during later decades. The last ever worship service was conducted in 1988.
According to a report by the International Survey of Jewish Monuments (ISJM), the original bimah and the ark (containing Torah scrolls) were moved to Israel in 1995 and preserved there.
In 1996, the synagogue was declared as a protected monument, however it continued to remain mostly neglected until 2009 when it was handed over to the Kerala State Department of Archaeology. Since 2010, the Government renovated the dilapidated structure as part of the Muziris Heritage Project and converted this into a museum to highlight the Jewish heritage of Kerala. They were opened to public in 2014.
The Paravur Synagogue is built with a unique blend of traditional Jewish Synagogue architecture as well as Kerala architectural styles. This is most evident in the use of Padippura (arched gateway) along the path that leads to the main building.
Similar to the architecture of other synagogues in Kerala, it has a balcony and a separate gallery for women to assemble, with direct access from outside through a staircase.

The Mala Synagogue is the oldest extant synagogue in India and was built by the historic Malabar Jews of Kerala. It is located at Mala, a small town in Thrissur district of Kerala state in south India.
The Mala synagogue is owned and managed by the Mala Panchayat now. During 1954-1955, due to the Aliyah of the Malabar Jewish community from Kerala to Israel, the community had handed over both the Mala Synagogue and the associated Jewish Cemetery to the Mala Panchayat for safekeeping. The Synagogue is currently defunct and does not have any religious material inside it.

Lost in history. Kadavumbhagam Synagogue, Market Road, Ernakulam is in the restoration phase a looking to reclaim its past glory .
One of two functional synagogues in Ernakulam, Kadavumbhagam Synagogue on the crowded Market Road just off Jew (or Jews) Street is a fine example of perseverance and hard work to reclaim and establish the Jewish glory.
Functional today as a Fish and Plant store in the front - Cochin Blossoms stands within the premises of Kadavumbagam Synagogue. The caretaker Elias “Babu” Josephai, who spearheads the trust that manages this Synagogue will be happy to show any visitor around t and explain the history.
I shall be covering the other 6 synagogues in Kochi and sharing the story behind each-one but before that I shall be doing the Story on Jews of Kerala which would explain the history of Jews in Kerala.
There is no entry fee but you need the permission of the caretaker to visit.
Open on all days from 0900 - 1900 hrs , except friday second half and saturday full day.
