Paradise Park
Paradise Park was a segregated African-American resort located about a mile down the Silver River from the popular Silver Springs attraction near Ocala, Florida. The park was developed by Carl Ray and W.M. “Shorty” Davidson, co-owners of Silver Springs for nearly four decades. Paradise Park opened May 20, 1949 and remained open until 1969. African-American families, tour buses and church groups came from all over Florida and the United States to visit the attraction. Amenities included a pavilion with a dance floor and jukebox, a swimming area with a sandy beach, tropical landscaping and space for softball and other games. Like its counterpart Silver Springs, Paradise Park featured glass-bottom boat tours that introduced visitors to the beauty of the Silver River. Easter egg hunts, baptisms and picnics were common, and at Christmas, Santa Claus would cruise down the river on a glass-bottom boat to pass out candy, nuts and fruit for young visitors. Herpetologist Ross Allen even set up a reptile exhibit at the park, similar to the one located upriver at Silver Springs.
This was a promotional film advertising Paradise Park. It opens with a shot of a sign directing motorists to the attraction, likely located at the intersection of Paradise Road (now NE 24th St.) and State Road 40. Scenes from the parking lot and picnic area come next, followed by footage from one of the park’s annual Labor Day beauty contests. These competitions were sponsored by the American Legion and featured contestants from across the state. Toward the end of the contest footage, a Legion official presents the winners with their awards. The film then moves on to the glass bottom boats, including footage of the passengers’ view into the clear waters of the Silver River. A young man and woman identified as Thomas and Lottie Donaldson swim to the sandy bottom with a sign that reads “Don’t Miss Paradise Park.” Bathers dive into the swimming area from a platform. The final scenes are from Ross Allen’s reptile exhibit, where an assistant is shown feeding and herding alligators. Two assistants are then seen in a snake exhibit, one handing a snake to someone in the crowd.
The State Archives partnered with Department of Environmental Protection, the owners of the film, to preserve the original 16 mm film and digitize it. Archivists sought outside assistance and worked closely with the film restoration specialists at MediaPreserve, an Audio-Visual Laboratory in Pennsylvania to restore most of the film stock and create a digital reproduction of its contents.

Florida Springs 01 Narration
The Alexander Springs Wilderness in the U.S. state of Florida was designated in 1984 by the United States Congress. Manatees migrate each year to the warm spring waters during the cold season, while alligators, otters and turtles can be observed all year around. In spite of their size, manatees have relatively little body fat and their metabolic rate is low compared to other marine mammals.
Alexander Springs is a first-magnitude spring that flows from the large, cavernous opening in the bottom of the central part of the pool, producing more than 80 million gallons of fresh water a day. Aquatic vegetation surrounds the area of the main spring vent, where the pool bottom falls away to reveal a large open area of exposed limestone rock and boulders to a depth of about 28 feet. The Alexander Spring Wilderness was filmed by Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro in Florida / 2014.
Hog Island for Sale!
Hog Island (Belle Island) Have your own kingdom on a private island! A set of unique properties are now on the market for someone who really wants to get away from it all. Living and working in densely populated cities means that most of us, sooner or later, crave a life away from noise and people. This group of properties being offered for the first time ever will provide exactly that. Hike, hunt, fish and boat in total seclusion an hour from Disney. Submerge yourself in nature on your own 237 acres of pristine Florida wild country. Venture into the forest and see deer, turkeys, bald eagles, bobcats and even a resident bear. Take your boat out for the day on the St. Johns River, Lake George, or the beautiful springs that are an easy distance away.
Fish in a place so special that people travel hundreds of miles to experience it! Try the excitement of an alligator hunt with one of the experienced guides in George Town. If you want to decompress inside, the island offers 3 totally renovated furnished cottages. They have a total of 8 bedrooms so you can invite your friends and family. Meet your guests on the mainland at your own quaint reception center, which is the oldest existing one room school house in the county (1899) All the locals have fond memories, and stories of their school days in that building and it is a great place to greet your guest, before you take them to your private mainland dock and then on to your private island.
Highlights of the Island are:
Miles of nature trails,
3 cottages ,
A helicopter pad,
Multiple docks (2 are heavy duty),
A wood equipment barn,
3 ponds, bridges, and a gazebo,
A metal equipment storage barn, a large shop and other structures,
All the equipment needed to maintain the Island,
A reverse osmosis treatment plant,
A playground with a playhouse,
All efforts have been made to make the island completely turnkey, unlike most islands; this island has its own connection to mainland power, phones, intranet and wells for water. The island is only accessible by boat, helicopter or float plane.
Also included in the sale are two mainland properties:
An island keeper's residence along with a boat, metal staging barn, and a private heavy duty dock on its own buildable waterfront lot, to access the island.
A lovingly restored one room school house to be used as the Island Reception center,
As is suitable for a hideaway, the island is somewhat remote, but is situated in Florida's best and second largest lake, Lake George, which is also part of the 340 mile long, north flowing St. John's River. The island is nearly equidistant from Jacksonville, Ocala, Orlando, and Daytona with historic St. Augustine being a bit closer. It is bordered on the west side of the lake by the Ocala National Forest and on the east by Georgetown.
Whether this special place is a millionaire's private bolt-hole, a family's compound, a corporate retreat, conservation land, or something else, this is a singular chance to acquire something that is almost impossible to find.
It is a beautiful mostly natural, large private island with its own mainland access and everything is move-in ready right down to the furnishing. The views are absolutely astounding!
Where in the world can you have a large private island (maybe the largest currently available in Florida) with a warm climate, close to a number of cities but out of reach to all of them, with a stable banking and political environment and where you can fish, hunt, crab, farm, build a dream house or just live and enjoy the wildlife in natural splendor and still be about 1 and 1/2 hours from Disney? There is only one place and this is IT!

Salt springs
Another one of our adventures led us to salt springs, this was our first visit and definitely wont be our last. I brought my best friend and her family along for the adventure and it was perfect! The weather was perfect and water was amazing. The water wasn't as salty as youd think either. It was refreshing...
The music is by stick figure.

Random information about salt springs I found on google:
Salt Springs Recreation Area is one of the recreational jewels of the Ocala National Forest. The recreation area is located in the lush, semi-tropical setting of central Florida. Within the recreation area is a natural spring rising from vertical fissures (cracks) from deep within the earth. The presence of potassium, magnesium and sodium salts give the waters in the spring a slight salinity. Hence the name Salt Springs.
Nestled in between lakes Kerr and George in Marion County near Ocala is a somewhat unusual attraction called Salt Springs. The name says it all: in this picturesque pool of roughly 190 by 130 feet, four vents in the limestone floor emit spring crystal clear water with a slight salinity owing to the presence of sodium, magnesium, and potassium salts in the underground passages below.
- FLORIDA
Local History
It has been said that Salt Springs is the legendary Fountain of Youth. . . Scientists have discovered that aging can be slowed by certain minerals and trace elements that are available only in unrefined groundwater, and the abundance and variety of helpful minerals in the water at Salt Springs can be found nowhere else in the United States.
In 1900, Daniel Morgan, a prominent Marion County resident and County Commissioner who also owned a timber and turpentine business, constructed a large framed home on the south side of Lake Kerr. This grand lakeside home contained ten rooms, with the kitchen and dining room separated from the main house, all constructed of heart of pine and trimmed cypress. When Mr. Morgan died accidentally, Columbus Townsend purchased the spacious house as a summer residence for his family, and proceeded to have it moved from the bank of Lake Kerr across the landscape to its present location, adjacent to the Springs.
According to Henry Sprinkle, a life-long resident of Salt Springs and grandson of Columbus Townsend, moving the house was quite a feat which took almost a year to complete. It was said that to move the house, they felled large pine trees laying them in front of the house as rollers and, like the Egyptians, pulled the house with teams of oxen and cattle.
In 1908, President Roosevelt set asaide the vast scrubland surrounding the Springs as the Ocala National Forest and only the stouthearted braved the hazards of traveling the long deep sand roads to enjoy the waters of this remote jewel.
In the 1800's
The King of Spain originally granted ownership of the property surrounding the Springs along with the five-mile run to Lake George to his supporters, the Hernandez family, who were not particularly attracted to the gift. Subsequently, the property remained undeveloped until the late 1800's when brothers, Walter and Columbus Townsend, who were prominent gentlemen in the turpentine business, saw an opportunity for shipping turpentine down Salt Springs Run and up the St. Johns River to the Naval Station in Jacksonville.
In the 1900's
In the 1920's, after having bought his brother's interest in the property and having laid claim to the Hernandez grant, Columbus sold all of the property to the Ray family of Ocala. With the coming of hard-top roads, many of Florida's natural treasures were popularized, but not Salt Springs; this remained a remote jewel but word had gotten out. Some came to be cured, believing through folklore that the waters had medicinal value, while others simply wanted to enjoy the bath of crystal clear waters. Regardless of the reason, all manner of homemade shelters sparng up among the oaks to accommodate the special breed of explorer who flocked to the Springs.
In the early 1960's, Highway S-19 opened exposing the Springs to the world. Portions of the scarce provate land nearby was soon subdivided and sold as campsites to those individuals wanting their own slice of the Forest. Over the years, most of those campsites have become permanent home sites, for both full-time residents and weekenders alike.
In 1979, the U.S. Government bought the Springs from the Ray family, along with the approximately ten acres of the Hernandez grant, for over $12 million. Development of the Salt Springs Recreation Area is still ongoing, with the most recent renovations completed in 2009. The old home still stands on the south side of the Springs, and one day may be renovated as a bed & breakfast.

**BLUE SPRING STATE PARK**
**ABOUT**
Blue Spring State Park is a state park located west of Orange City, Florida in the United States. The park is a popular tourist destination; available activities include canoeing, SCUBA diving, kayaking, fishing, camping, hiking, wildlife watching, and swimming. The spring is the largest on the St. Johns River and with a relatively warm temperature of 73°, the spring attracts many Florida manatees during the winter months.
The spring and surrounding land was acquired by the Weismore family in the mid-19th century and a large plantation-style home built upon a shell mound on the property. The area seemed to be excellent for cultivation of citrus fruit, and a small railway was built linking Orange City to the dock at Blue Spring. Ultimately, the Florida East Coast Railway was constructed not far from the present-day park. A killing freeze occurred in the 1890s, wiping out area citrus groves and driving the industry south. The Thursbys switched to the tourist trade, taking advantage of the beautiful spring and excellent fishing and hunting opportunities along the St. Johns River.
The park was acquired by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in 1972 to kick-start its manatee protection program.
