Wardha district (वर्धा) is one of the 36 districts in the state of Maharashtra in western India. This district is a part of Nagpur Division. The city of Wardha is the administrative headquarters of the district. The district had a population of 1,300,774, of which 26.28% were urban as of 2011.
The History of the Wardha district dates back to ancient times. It has a unique place in Indian Natural History, since the Ostrich egg-shell has been found at Sindi (Railway) in Wardha district. It was included in the empire of Mauryas, Shungas, Satavahanas and Vakatakas. Pravarpur, now modern-day Pavnar, was once the capital of the Vakataka dynasty. Vakatakas were contemporaries of the Imperial Guptas. The daughter of Chandragupta II, Prabhavatigupta, was married to the Vakataka ruler Rudrasena II. The Vakataka Dynasty lasted from the 2nd to 5th centuries AD. Their state stretched from the Arabian Sea in the west to the Bay of Bengal in the east and from the Narmada River in the north to the Krishna-Godavari Delta in the south.
Later on, Wardha was ruled by Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Delhi Sultanate, Bahamani Sultanate, Muslim ruler of Berar, Gonds and Maratha. Raja Buland Shaha of Gonds, Raghuji of Bhonsale were the prominent rulers in Medieval period. Nearby 1850s Wardha, (then a part of Nagpur) fell into the hands of British. They included Wardha in the Central Provenance. Wardha is a sister city for Sevagram, and both were used as major centers for the Indian Independence Movement, especially as headquarters for an annual meet of the Indian National Congress in 1934, and Mahatma Gandhi's Ashram.
Usha Tai_Paunar Vinoba Ashram
Usha Tai had worked with Vinoba Bhave in Brahma Vidya Mandir, Paunar, Maharashtra, India.
Founded by Vinoba Bhave, Brahma Vidya Mandir is the temple (Mandir) where one seeks the wisdom and experience(Vidya) of the Absolute(Brahma). Women’s spiritual emancipation is the motto of Brahma Vidya Mandir. At present, in all, 28 sisters live in the ashram. they come from different states of India and one is from Japan. Without distinction of caste, creed, language, religion, and nationality they share their lives together. Brothers closely associated with Vinobaji also lived with the sisters.
Life in Brahma Vidya Mandir is the fusion of the three classic currents of sadhana, Karma (action), Jnana (knowledge), and Bhakti (devotion). This threeefold combination provides the means to meet the fundamental needs of the body, mind and spirit.
The members of Brahma Vidya Mandir are diligently committed to Samuhik Sadhana(collective spiritual pursuit for the realization of the Self). This collective spiritual sadhana is central theme of the ashram. In short, this means surrendering all of one’s capacities at the feet of the Lord, abiding in the group, and seeing the inter-union of all aspirants as different organs of one body.
There are 5 pillars of the community’s spiritual life, all grounded in satya(truth) and ahimsa (nonviolence). The pillars are Brahmacharya(celibacy), Samuhik Sadhana, Shrama(productive manual labour), Swadhyaya (self study) and Bhakti (devotion).

Seth Jamnalal Bajaj of Wardha, a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, made available to the ashram about 300 acres (1.2 km2) of land. The small homes which were built in the ashram for Gandhi and Kasturba, and his followers were similar to the typical village homes. The ashram employed some harijans in the common kitchen to break the caste barrier. Also, there is Vinoba Bhave's Param Dham Ashram located on the banks of the Dhaam river.
Sewagram is home to the first rural medical college in India, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, and an engineering college which is also run by a rural trust (Bapurao Deshmukh College of Engineering, previously called Sewagram College of Engineering). Both medical and engineering colleges are equipped with modern infrastructure and students from all over India come to these colleges.

few Info About Sevagram :-
Sevagram (meaning A village for/of service) is the name of a village in the state of Maharashtra, India. It was the place of Mohandas Gandhi's (Gandhiji's) ashram and his residence from 1936 to his death in 1948.
When Gandhi started his padayatra (foot march) in 1930 from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi for the Salt Satyagraha, he decided not to return to Sabarmati till India achieved independence. Gandhi was imprisoned for more than two years. On his release he spent sometime travelling around India. He decided to make a village in Central India his headquarters. He came to Wardha in 1934, at the invitation of his follower and industrialist, Jamnalal Bajaj and stayed in one of the rooms at Jamnalal's bungalow (Bajajwadi) at Wardha and in the Prarthana mandir of Mahila Ashram for sometime.
In April 1936, Gandhiji established his residence in a village called Segaon at the outskirts of Wardha, which he renamed as Sevagram, which means 'village of service'. Gandhiji was 67 years old when he came to Sevagram. Many decisions on important national matters and movements were taken at Sevagram. It became the central place for a number of institutions for the nation building activities devised by Gandhiji to suit the inherent strength of this country. Letters addressed to Gandhi would often get misdirected to Shegaon, a small village of a similar name close by. Sevagram is 8 km from Wardha town in Maharashtra and 75 km from Nagpur. In spite of many practical difficulties, Gandhiji decided to settle here. Though he did not have any intentions of keeping anybody with him except his wife Kasturba, pressure of work necessitated more colleagues with him till Sevagram Ashram became a full-fledged institution. There were no facilities at Sevagram, not even a post or telegraph office. The letters used to be brought from Wardha. There was another village in this region named Shegaon, made famous by the residence of Saint Gajanan Maharaj. So, Gandhiji's letters used to get misdirected. Therefore, it was decided in 1940 to rename this village as Sevagram or 'the village of service'.

Rayappa Kasi Brahma Vidya Mandir, Vinoba Bhave, Pavnar, India
Along with her, 30-odd inmates of this ashram known as the Brahma Vidya Mandir are following strict regime that was brought into practice five decades ago when the ashram was established by Bhave, the father of Bhoodan Movement that paved way for peaceful transfer of land to the landless. Their day begins at 4am and all lights are off by 8 in the evening irrespective of the season. They don't have television sets, mobiles or Internet. Their only way of communication with the world is a lone landline through which they talk with friends and relatives once in a while.
Located on the picturesque Dham river, just 10 kms from Wardha and close to Gandhiji's ashram in Sewagram, Vinoba had established this ashram for women which was formerly called as Paramdham. Bhave, who founded the place in 1959, dedicated it to women as he was the opinion that there were very few places where women could practice spirituality.
There is not a single well-known politician who hasn't visited the ashram to seek Vinoba's guidance. Right from former premier Jawaharlal Nehru and former president Rajendra Prasad to Indira Gandhi to PM Manmohan Singh and Pratibha Patil, every one of them had been to the ashram at various times. Former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri paid a visit here on the second day after being elevated to the top post.
Interestingly, this place doesn't have any single manager or administrator. We believe in team work and therefore all our activities are conducted as per unanimous decisions of all sisters, Gautam Bajaj, the lone male inmate staying in the ashram informs. Like Bajaj, a majority of women had the privilege to share this place with Vinoba who spent his last years observing Kshetra-Sanyas (confining oneself in the precincts of a particular place) and Sookshma Karma Yoga (the subtle philosophy of action). Septuagenarian Bajaj takes care of accounts and all important documents with the permission of other Ashram mates.
