Adder at Parc Slip Nature Reserve - 4 May 2015
After many attempts of trying to see an adder in Parc Slip Nature Reserve we finally saw our first one on May 4th 2015. It was a male and the markings were beautiful. Here are a collection of clips of the snake in it's natural surroundings.

Ride the Hogsmill!
Spot the heron :p
The Hogsmill River is a small stream in Surrey-Outer London, UK with a source in the Epsom-Ewell area and which flows into the River Thames at Kingston-upon-Thames .
More info:
It is one of the few in southwest London that can be seen along public routes for most of its course; others spend much of their time in culverts. More info on the Unlost Rivers of London at:
Here's me trying to follow it as closely as possible on me trusty machine (combines several separate trips). Much of the route coincides with a segment of the London Loop Walk.
More info:
Notes:
0:04 The generally recognised source of the river in Bourne Hall Park, Ewell. An alternative source based on the longest tributary would be a channel that starts in Epsom and joins at around 1:45 but that is now little more than a drainage ditch, partly in culverts.
0.52 Walking up to this point. The dismount sign shows I can cycle from here, though there doesn't seem to be any other indication of a cycle path.
Cycle infrastructure: highly variable surfacing, shared use, but doable on most utilty bikes
1:33 Hogsmill Nature Reserve
Cycle infrastructure: generally well kept fine gravel (no tar) shared use footpath, though some bits are getting muddy/rutted and beyond 2:38 the hardcore base is showing through, making it marginally unpleasant on a utlity bike.
3:23 to cross the road (A240) you have to make a detour round 3 sides of an elongate rectangle, with extraordinarily long waits at traffic lights
3:24 able-bodied walking only [+ the odd interloper ;) ], and no baby strollers
4:13 private properties monopolise the stream here so we have to find another way
4:33 Into Larndan innit (from Epsomand Ewell).
4:39 to 5:27 surfaces variable from grass/mud to fine gravel with hardcore and tree roots often poking through. Able-bodied walking only [+ the odd interloper ;) ], and no baby strollers. Wellies an advantage.
5:29 under the A3 - you may want to look up teh concept of social safety
5:40 back on the grass/mud to fine gravel with hardcore and tree roots often poking through. Able-bodied walking [+ the odd interloper ;) ], and no baby strollers. Wellies an advantage.
5:45 CX technique :D
5:51 :-/
5:57 drawing a veil over more grass/mud etc, we rejoin the route where it becomes cyclable again (about 1/2 km omitted)
6:06 The London Loop joins London Cycle Network Route 75 here. (LCN75) We have to leave the stream where it flows without a path at the side, between the Hogsmill Valley Sewage Treatment Works and Kingston Cemetery
Cycle infrastructure: short bidirectional off-road cycle path providing a short cut between Malden and Berrylands.
6:10 LCN75 no cycle infrastructure
6:26 LCN75 bidirectional off-road cycle path (& another bike rider!) providing a short cut between Malden and Berrylands.
6:36 LCN75 no cycle infrastructure
6:58 LCN75 goes off to the left, as we look for the Hogsmill again. We're still on the London Loop.
7:01 short section by the side of Hogsmill Lane, dead end behind me.
7:09 Interesting warren of off-road paths round parts of the Kingston University campus, though one is unsurfaced and we have to go on-road for a section.Unclear whether cycling is permitted, though being off-road, I presume the only offence would be trespass.
7:27 bicycles! But is there no proper parking?
7:42 allow me a wee moan. The post in the middle of the cycle path indicates that it is shared use. For something's sake, why? Why are riders the only ones who always have to share, even when there is room for all road users?
8:00 Cycle infrastructure: shared use-toucan-bidirectional cycle path. Two more bike riders!!
8:15 doesn't say no cycling, but I walked this section; some signage would be useful (even if subtle as at 8:44)
8:50 you looking at me? :)
