*********
A town and its times. Certaldo has two stories to tell, one modern and the other its early history. The two parts of the city are two chapters in the book of ages. Tourists who love art and the events of the past will focus immediately on Certaldo Alta, also known as “Certaldo Castello”, because of its altitude and defences. Everybody says that here the clock stopped when warring ceased and a more placid era of peace became established. In fact, what good is a castle without a siege, with no mortars, no musketeers and no captains or soldiers? At the end of the thirteenth century, with the decline of Albertis, feudal lords of the town since 1164, and the union with Florence, the nature of Certaldo was transformed. In the town perched up high, weapons were laid down and the institutional buildings, which would become the capital of the Vicariate in 1415, remained. In the lower town, marked by the Via Francigena (pilgrims’ way), commerce, trades, crafts and care for the pilgrims in transit began to flourish.
The massive flow of travellers attracted by the road to Rome was the bearer of new ideas, often of a cultural and material influence. So, curiously enough, the tiles seen on Certaldo buildings are the same as those used in Lombardy, the basins fixed to the facades of the churches of show embellishments of Arab origin and sculptures and architectural signs derived from the lexicon of Pisa Romanesque architecture. Certaldo is a primer of styles and influences to which we must add, in the churches, the work of the Florentine workshop of Della Robbia and the splendid figures of saints and Madonnas from the brush of Sienese artists.
“Certaldo is a castle placed in our countryside, which, although little, has already been inhabited by noblemen and the wealthy,” says the town’s most famous personality, Giovanni Boccaccio. To this illustrious writer Certaldo consecrates its memory. It is not only the house where he spent the last years of his life, or the library or the statues portraying him that commemorate his life. Walking through the streets, eyeing between the angles of these simple brick houses, between the open spaces and well-curbs, steps and loggias we can almost see some of the characters in the Decameron, ready to tell us a joke or whisper the latest rumour .The construction highlight of Certaldo Alta is the use of brick in all manner of shapes and all shades of red and brown. Drawn from the clays that cover the hills of Val d’Elsa, this ugly but very practical material was used for the construction of simple, basic architecture of clean volumes whether they were homes, churches or forts. Via Boccaccio, the axis of the upper town and taking the place of a main square, gives exactly that impression of unity of matter, from the pavements to the crown of battlements on the buildings.
What not to miss
Too little space to talk in detail about the monuments of Certaldo: the Praetorian Palace, on top of the hill, the church, the cloister and the convent of Saints Philip and James, where the tomb of Boccaccio is kept, Machiavelli Palace, which was his home-tower and other adjacent noble palaces, the three gates in the city walls and so on. To finish, the tabernacle of the Executed, reassembled in the church of Saints Thomas and Prospero, which served to comfort those condemned to death. From the vision of the fresco painted scenes of martyrdom they would have drawn strength and comfort in the face of their imminent fate. The works of 1466-67, are certainly not second hand and belong to the great Florentine Benozzo Gozzoli. The cultural activities of Certaldo are today carried out in the “Laboratori Polis” where educational courses are held to encourage appreciation of the Certaldo area and the importance of its conservation. Among the most interesting events, we should include Mercantia, when, during the last week of July, the old town is transformed into a stage where street artists, jugglers, clowns, bands and musicians enliven the days and, especially, the evenings by performing next to dinner tables of the best Tuscan dishes.
Why it received the “Orange flag”, seal of tourism and environmental quality
The site offers visitors an efficient tourist information service and a rich and varied range of accommodation and restaurants. The old town is harmonious, with its uniform and lively architecture and there are many important historical and cultural resources in the municipal area.

« Certaldo, come voi forse avete potuto udire, è un castello di Val d'Elsa posto nel nostro contado, il quale, quantunque picciol sia, già di nobil uomini e d'agiati fu abitato »

Certaldo - Tuscany - I Like Italy
Certaldo is not far from Florence, in the middle of the valley of the Elsa river. Certaldo is the home town of Boccaccio, one of the greatest italian writer ever.
Certaldo means history, tradition and art, and it's a mandatory step for all the visitors of Tuscany.
Certaldo was founded in 1164, with the building of the old castle, when Federico Barbarossa gave the territory to the family of Conti Alberti. In XIII century Certaldo was conquered from Florence and from that century the history of Certaldo became strongly related to the Florence history.
The old castle is seat in the high part of the town, and nowadays it still preserves the medieval structures of the streets and buildings.
One of the main buildings is the Palazzo Pretorio, the symbol of Certaldo. It is the rest of the ancient castle of the Conti Alberti. Nowadays it's the seat of a gallery of modern art.
Close to the Palace there is the Church of Santi Jacopo e Filippo, in a perfect romanesque-style. It was builded in XIII century and nowadays it host the museum of Holy Art. Inside the old church there are the remains of Boccaccio.
The main street of the old town is Via Boccaccio, where we can find the house of the writer, completely re-builded after the second world war, and nowadays it's the seat of an important Library dedicated to Boccaccio.
In the old town there is also the palace Stiozzi Ridolfi, it was builded in XIV century. It is completely inside the old castle, with two towers and a big court.
Three gates still assure the access to the old castle: Porta al Sole, Porta Alberti and Porta del Rivellino.
The whole area of Certaldo is covered by history. In fact there are several outstanding buildings just outside the town, like the ruins of the Castle of Pogni.
The Castle of Pogni was one of the most powerful outpost of the Alberti dinasty. Now we can admire only a broken tower and some ruins of the old palace.
The Church of San Lazzaro a Lucardo was builded in X century. It's a classic example of romanesque-style church, with three naves and a basilica-like base. Maybe the most important romanesque-style building of the whole valley.
The Chapel of San Michele Arcangelo is close to Certaldo and it was builded in 1597, by Santi Tito. It's a perfect scale down (1:8) of the Florence Dome and nowadays it's the only remains of the old town of Semifonte.
The main yearly event of Certaldo is Mercantia, in july. A festival of street theatre and local craftsmanship. It's a very famous event, where it's possible to merge music, dance, theatre and cfraftsmanship, framed by the medieval old town.
Street artists from all the world are guests of the city for five days and the event involves hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
For our journeys of the taste we'd like to underline one of the most famous high-quality product of Certaldo, the Bianchetto (little white) truffle.
The gathering of this kind of truffle is usually in march (for this reason it's called Marzoulo too)
This kind of truffle is not estemeed as the white truffle of San Miniato, gathered in november.
The size of the Marzuolo is usually smaller, with a strong good smell. It's a good ingredient for Tuscan recipes, because it's tasty but cheaper then the San Miniato's truffle.

Tuscany (Certaldo & San Gimignano) - ITALY DAY 2 [VLOG #16]
Click 'Show More' for more details on our trip...
2nd day of Italy… we arrived in Tuscany as you can see on the previous vlog.. as tired as we are we decided to start the say with a chill day in the villa (pool and jacuzzi)…
After all that we decided to visit our local town for lunch… and we got nothing of out it.. MAJOR FAIL..!!! we did not expect that like spain.. italians have siestas too or riposo as they would call it… it was 4pm and super desperate for food we decided to go to Coop.fi (la big grocery store that also serves hot food) .. we also did our groceries for snacks and breakfast to last us a few days and not get hungry again.
Once fuelled, we decided that since we are already out we should just check out San Gimignano (not sure if I’m pronouncing it correctly on the vlog) took pictures, explored the place, had our usual gelato to keep us cool from the extreme heat (mind you it was 30C + degrees the whole time we were in Italy), and had a proper Italian dinner in Le Vecchio Mura Overall food was great.!
Got out and we heard some drums which ended up to be like a show they usually have at night in the area. Long day so we didn’t stay long took a peek.. went back to the villa and had night swims.
Basically, this blog was pretty chill and fun for the most part.. the next day was quite interesting as we tackled to go to Florence and Pisa… tiring but worth the trip… defo check it out on the next vlog..
If you liked the video give it a big 'thumbs up' and Subscribe to watch more.
Thanks for watching..!!
