Located only a 24 Km away from Paris, The palace was originally built by Louis XIII as a hunting lodge. It wasn’t turned into a palace until Louis XIII’s son, the famous Louis XIV, decided to do so. The Château de Versailles housed the kings and queens of France until they were chased out in 1789 during the French Revolution. Our Spring trip to France was a two-day weekend to explore more of Paris and finally make our way out to Versailles. After hopping on the train from London to Paris, we started our weekend in the beautiful and inspiring neighborhood of Montmartre before heading to our home base in Saint Germain. By dedicating one day to Paris and one day to Versailles, we were able to make the most of each spot. Every time we return to Paris, we fall more in love with the city and can't wait to continue to deepen that connection with future trips!

Versailles, France - Palace of Versailles (2018)
The Palace of Versailles (French: Château de Versailles) was the principal residence of the Kings of France from Louis XIV in 1682 until the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789. It is located in the Yvelines Department of the Île-de-France region, about twenty kilometers (14 miles) southwest of the centre of Paris.
The Palace is now a French Historic Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, notable especially for the ceremonial Hall of Mirrors, the jewel-like Opera theater, and royal apartments; for the more intimate royal residences, the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon located within the park; the small rustic hamlet created for Marie Antoinette; and the vast Gardens of Versailles with fountains, canals, and geometric flower beds and groves, laid out by André le Nôtre. The Palace was stripped of all its furnishings after the French Revolution, but many pieces have been returned and many of the palace rooms have been restored.

Versailles is a wealthy suburb of Paris with a service based economy and is a major tourist destination. This film features views around the town of Versailles, which is situated on the the South West outskirts of Paris in the Yvelines département in Île-de-France region. The town is renowned worldwide for its château, the Château de Versailles and the gardens of Versailles, designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The film is taken around the town of Versailles, as well as at the Château and extensive gardens. The Château was closed to enter as filming was taking place for a period drama, but there are some nice shots of the actors in their costumes. The gardens were open and looked spectacular as ever, even in the drab grey weather.

This is my Versailles Palace vlog of the Fat Tire Versailles Full-Day Bike Tour with Picnic! I hope you enjoy the ride! If you are looking for a Versailles tour with a unique spin, I would 100% recommend.
Upon arrival in the town of Versailles, we rode to the famous city market to shop for our picnic supplies. We bought meat, cheese, bead, hummus, French pastries, fresh raspberries... all the essentials!
We then cruised through the Château's enormous grounds along a network of fantastic trails and tree-lined paths, pausing along the way to share the rich history of the palace and French monarchy. I loved learning more about Marie Antoinette and the scandalous French monarchy!
Next we had our picnic at the end of the Grand Canal. Life doesn't get much better than this!
After lunch, we continued through the grounds to visit Marie Antoinette's Hamlet and the Petit Trianon. Finally, our bike tour offered us skip-the-line access to the Château to avoid the tremendously long lines. You see the room where Marie Antoinette’s guards were killed as they protected her from the mob at the beginning of the Revolution. You walk through the breathtaking Hall of Mirrors where King Louis greeted guests, and centuries later the Treaty of Versailles was signed to end World War I.
By using the bike you explore exponentially more of the 2,000+ acres of royal property than you would ever be able to see on your own.
This amazing Palace of Versailles tour is a wonderful day trip from Paris. If you are looking for a unique way to visit Versailles Palace or just want to avoid that feeling of frustration that you barely covered the palace of Versailles garden then I definitely recommend this tour to you!

The Palace of Versailles or Château de Versailles was the principal royal residence of France from 1682, under Louis XIV, until the start of the French Revolution in 1789, under Louis XVI. It is located in the department of Yvelines, in the region of Île-de-France, 12 miles southwest of the centre of Paris.
The palace is now a Monument historique and UNESCO World Heritage site, notable especially for the ceremonial Hall of Mirrors, the jewel-like Royal Opera, and the royal apartments; for the more intimate royal residences, the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon located within the park; the small rustic Hamlet created for Marie Antoinette; and the vast Gardens of Versailles with fountains, canals, and geometric flower beds and groves, laid out by André le Nôtre. The Palace was stripped of all its furnishings after the French Revolution, but many pieces have been returned and many of the palace rooms have been restored.
In 2017 the Palace of Versailles received 7,700,000 visitors, making it the second-most visited monument in the Île-de-France region, just behind the Louvre and ahead of the Eiffel Tower.
The Palace briefly returned to the world stage in June, 1919, when the Treaty of Versailles, formally ending the First World War, was signed in the Hall of Mirrors. Between 1925 and 1928, the American philanthropist and multi-millionaire John D. Rockefeller gave $2,166,000, the equivalent of about thirty million dollars today, to restore and refurnish the palace.
More work took place after World War II, with the restoration of the Royal Opera of Versailles. The theater was reopened in 1957, in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
In 1978, parts of the Palace were heavily damaged in a bombing committed by Breton terrorists

A Walk Around Les Jardins des Versailles, Versailles, France
The Gardens of Versailles occupy part of what was once the Domaine royal de Versailles, the royal demesne of the château of Versailles. Situated to the west of the palace, the gardens cover some 800 hectares of land, much of which is landscaped in the classic French formal garden style perfected here by André Le Nôtre. Beyond the surrounding belt of woodland, the gardens are bordered by the urban areas of Versailles to the east and Le Chesnay to the north-east, by the National Arboretum de Chèvreloup to the north, the Versailles plain (a protected wildlife preserve) to the west, and by the Satory Forest to the south.
Administered by the Public Establishment of the Palace, Museum and National Estate of Versailles, an autonomous public entity operating under the aegis of the French Ministry of Culture, the gardens are now one of the most visited public sites in France, receiving more than six million visitors a year.
In addition to the meticulous manicured lawns, parterres, and sculptures are the fountains, which are located throughout the garden. Dating from the time of Louis XIV and still using much of the same network of hydraulics as was used during the Ancien Régime, the fountains contribute to making the gardens of Versailles unique. On weekends from late spring to early autumn, the administration of the museum sponsors the Grandes Eaux – spectacles during which all the fountains in the gardens are in full play. Designed by André Le Nôtre, the Grand Canal is the masterpiece of the Gardens of Versailles. In the Gardens too, the Grand Trianon was built to provide Sun King with the retreat he wanted. The Petit Trianon is associated with Marie-Antoinette, who spent her time there with her closest relatives and friends.
In 1979, the gardens along with the château were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, one of thirty-one such designations in France.

Travel Log: Also known as The Château de Versailles, is located 35 km west of Paris, and was the principal residence and expansive gardens of the French kings from the time of Louis XIV to Louis XVI. Embellished by several generations of architects, sculptors, decorators and landscape architects, it provided Europe with a model of the ideal royal residence for over a century. The Town of Versailles is also one of the wealthiest cities near Paris.
Originally, the palace started out as simply a hunting lodge built by Louis XIII. However, after that Louis XIV decided he wanted to build the palace that we know today at that exact location. In 1789 the palace lost its seat in power, but today hosts the Museum of France's history.
The Palace of Versailles has been the scene for several historic events, not the least of which was the signing, on 28 June 1919 within the Hall of Mirrors, of the Peace Treaty between defeated Germany and the Allies that brought the First World War officially to an end. The signing of the treaty at Versailles, of course, mirrored the proclamation, in 1871 within the same long hall, of the establishment of the German Empire under the Prussian king, subsequently the Kaiser.
Marie-Antoinette's Estate, also known as Le Domaine de Marie-Antoinette, opened to visitors in 2006, allows you to see the human side of the much-maligned young Queen. This is where she went to get away from the ritual and pressures of the Grand Château and royal life.
A small château just a short walk from the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon is a more private and personal palace. En route from the Grand Trianon you can take a look at the Chapel and the lovely Queen's Theater. Built by order of Marie-Antoinette, this elegant theater was the site of operas and other soirées hosted by the Queen. By Versailles standards it is small, with a beautiful blue, white, and gold decor.

Versailles is a place that is very commonly associated with France as a country and it is very much on the tourist route from visitors to Paris or even just the country of France in general. However, I, as a French person had never been to the Chateau de Versailles prior to my visit in this vlog. That is why, I absolutely wanted to take advantage of my week in Paris to go on a day trip to this magical place of french history and despite the unbearable hoards of tourists, I didn't regret the visit.
