St Albans, is a city in Hertfordshire, England, and the major urban area in the City and District of St Albans. St Albans lies east of Hemel Hempstead and west of Hatfield, about 19 miles (31 km) north-northwest of London, 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Welwyn Garden City and 11 miles (18 km) south-southeast of Luton. St Albans was the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street for travellers heading north, and it became the Roman city of Verulamium. St Albans is a historic market town and is now a dormitory town within the London commuter belt and the Greater London Built-up Area.
Two railway stations serve the city, St Albans City station, which is situated 0.5 miles (800 m) east of the city centre, and St Albans Abbey station, which is situated approximately 0.7 miles (1 km) south-west of the city station. St Albans City station is served by Thameslink on a frequent and fast rail link through central London. Suburban services stop at all stations on the route, while express services are non-stop to London St Pancras International (St Albans City station to St Pancras International – 18 minutes). Trains run north to Harpenden, Luton, Luton Airport Parkway and on to Bedford. St Albans Abbey station is the terminus of a single-track line from Watford Junction station.
St Albans has a thriving cultural life, with regular concerts and theatre productions held at venues including Trestle Arts Base, St Albans Abbey, Maltings Arts Theatre, the Alban Arena, the Abbey Theatre, St Peter's Church and St Saviour's Church, given by numerous organisations including St Albans Bach Choir, St Albans Cathedral Choir, St Albans Abbey Girls' Choir, St Albans Symphony Orchestra, St Albans Chamber Choir, St Albans Chamber Opera, The Company of Ten, St Albans Choral Society, and St Albans Organ Theatre.
The St Albans Museum service runs two museums: Verulamium Museum, which tells the story of everyday life in Roman Britain using objects from the excavations of the important Roman Town; and the Museum of St Albans, which focuses on the history of the town and of Saint Alban. The Watercress nature reserve is by the River Ver and is run by the Watercress Wildlife Association.

360º view from St Michael's Church tower - Aldbourne, Wiltshire, England
Opening the church tower to the public is a rather special occasion - and it also offers fine views of the village and surrounding countryside.
St Michael's has a long history - the Wiltshire Council website, for example, says that there was a well established church here in 966, which was most likely to have been made out of wood. In 1086, the Domesday Book mentioned that two hides of land belonged to the church, enough to support it and a priest.
By the mid-12th century there was a stone church with an aisled nave and, perhaps, a central tower; the south doorway and some masonry survive from this building. It is thought that a fire damaged the church in around 1220 and it had to be rebuilt. The new church was cruciform in plan with a long chancel, a central tower, and an aisled nave of 4 bays; the dedication was to St. Mary Magdalene. In 1460 Richard Goddard had the 99 feet high west tower built, the central tower was removed and the crossing arches rebuilt. Chantry chapels were added to the chancel, porches and an embattled clerestory to the nave, the roofs renewed and the windows enlarged. By the 15th century the dedication was to St. Michael.
In the early 16th century a small chapel was added between the south porch and the transept. The south porch itself had an upper room that had been used as a school for Latin grammar by the chantry priests. A Sunday School was in existence by the late 18th century and a gallery was erected for their use. Music was provided by gallery musicians but, by 1827, there was a gallery with an organ. The church was said to be in poor condition in 1858 as the roof was leaking, the floorboards were rotten and some masonry was out of the perpendicular. Restoration took place in 1867 under William Butterfield. A new, more steeply pitched, slate roof was built over the old 15th century one - which was retained as a ceiling for the nave and chancel. The north porch and the stair turret in the south porch were removed and the east window replaced by one of 3 lancets.
In 1957 the living was held with Baydon vicarage and in 1965 the two were united. They were combined with Ramsbury in 1973 as a team ministry. In 1974 the old vicarage was sold and a new one built. There are 8 bells; 2 of the early 16th century, 2 of the 17th century, and 4 from the 18th century that were made in Aldbourne (one of these was recast in 1915).
The registers from 1637, apart from those in current use, are held in the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office. Those for marriages and burials between 1639 and 1646 are missing.
Several scenes from the TV series 'Band of Brothers' were shot in and around Aldbourne.
Change ringing at St. Albans
A band ringing changes on Pentecost, 8 June 2014 at the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St. Alban. Many of these timbers in the central tower remain from the 11th and 12th century Norman phase. At one point you can see some tags on unused ropes swaying--the movement of the tower! Outside it was a spectacular day--a western view into Hertfordshire.

St Mary's Parish Anglican Church Tombs Graves Watford Hertfordshire Heritage
St Mary’s Church is Grade I listed and is the oldest building in the Borough of Watford in the Church Street, Watford, WD18 0EG
It is an ancient and architecturally interesting building, some parts of it dating back to around 1230, with several extensions built and refurbishments completed since then. Today there is also an adjoining Church Centre, constructed in the late 1970s, which provides accommodation for some of our church activities.
Watford Borough Council was awarded a grant of £80,300 by the Heritage Lottery Fund towards a project to help restore a number of chest tombs in St Mary’s Churchyard.
The tombs that have been restored date from between 1725, the Isaac Finch Tomb and 1867 when John Dyson was buried in the Dyson Tomb.
GEORGE EDWARD DONEY GRAVESTONE
This grave is of national significance, and represents a notable aspect of the social history of the town. The headstone marks the grave of a black man who was born in Gambia in West Africa. He was sold into slavery in Virginia, USA before starting work as a servant to the Earls of Essex on the Cassiobury Estate, for whom he worked for 44 years.
He was buried in the St Mary’s Church Graveyard in 1809 and we know from the parish registers that he had also been christened at St Mary’s Church 35 years earlier, in 1774.
