Kostroma, unique Russian small town
Kostroma is a historic city in Russia. A part of the Golden Ring of Russian towns, it is located at the confluence of the Volga and Kostroma Rivers. There are a huge number of samples of wooden architecture in Kostroma. Most of the wooden houses are in good condition and are exquisitely decorated. But there are some exceptions as well. Kostroma is located on the Volga River. On the slope there is a park with pavilions and seating areas, offering beautiful views of the river. Souvenirs in Kostroma are mostly wooden toys, soft toys, handmade soap. All these are typical souvenirs of a standard small Russian town.

Kostroma is first mentioned in the chronicles in 1213, but is believed by some historians to have been founded by Moscow Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1152, making it just five years younger than Moscow.
Today, Kostroma is a river port, a light-industry center and a serene spot on the Volga River with a population of about 275,000 people. The town is actively developing. In recent years, Kostroma has worked to promote tourism by restoring monuments and public spaces as well as designing new excursion programs and investing in city festivals and cultural events.

Holidays in Russia: Moscow 2018
For the holidays this year, we travelled to Moscow, Russia to celebrate New Years with the family. It took me forever to actually edit at least some of it together, but it's snowing today in New York, so I guess it counts as winter and it's still a good time to post my Moscow vlog for the archives.
In this video, we went on a walk through Old Arbat, all the way down to Aleksandrovsky Garden next to the Kremlin and the Red Square, and had traditional tea and pies at a Christmas market. The next day we spent cooking and wrapping gifts, later followed by the New Year celebrations and fireworks.

Traditional Russian dance in the Sokolniki Park.
Sokolniki Park, named for the falcon hunt of the Grand Dukes of Muscovy formerly conducted there, is located in the eponymous Sokolniki District of Moscow. Sokolniki Park is not far from the center of the city, near Sokolnicheskaya Gate. The park gained its name from the Sokolnichya Quarter, the 17th century home of the sovereign's falconers (sokol is the Russian word for falcon). It was created by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich (father of Peter the Great), a keen hunter who loved to go falconing in the area.
The park's current layout of clearings and alleys began under Peter. In 1900 a labyrinth, or network of alleys, was laid out.
Today Sokolniki is a typical Russian park, with an aging funfair and other amusements for children, and numerous fast food stalls all clustered near the main entrance. In summer the central alleyways are a mass of brightly colored formal flowerbeds, while the depths of the park are a wilderness home to pines and spruces, birches and oaks, limes and maples - all trees native to the Moscow region - as well as a number of non-indigenous trees, such as larches, cedars, walnut, red oaks, etc. The park's wildlife includes hares, squirrels and weasels, as well as 76 types of bird.
It was established as a public municipal park in 1878, and from 1931 onwards Sokolniki has been being developed as an official park of culture and leisure. The park, with an area of 6 square kilometers, is also the western-most extension of a larger Losiny Ostrov natural reserve that spans from the eastern edge of Sokolniki to MKAD ring road and beyond. The park territory contains an amusement park, a winter outdoor ice skating rink and an exposition centre which was the site of the Kitchen Debate in 1959.[1] It also contains the Sokolniki Sports Palace, home to the ice hockey team HC Spartak Moscow. The soccer club in Sokolniki has been the site of a 2006 murder of Central Bank executive Andrey Kozlov.

1913 marked the Tercentenary of the ruling Romanov Dynasty. A country-wide celebration was held for a whole year. The key event – a symbolic tour on the Volga river in May, when Nicholas II and his family followed the route of the first Romanov Tsar, Mikhail I, from Kostroma to Moscow to assume the throne in 1613.
