An overview of Don's Cab-Inns Campground in Explore Park
-----------------------------------------
Tara S.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Glamping on the Blue Ridge Parkway!
Don's Cab-Inns Campground unique for several reasons. First, it is a private campground located in a public park - in this case, Explore Park in Roanoke, Virginia (milepost 115 on the Blue Ridge Parkway). Explore Park is run by Roanoke County, who partners with different vendors to create a full outdoor experience for folks who want to the gamut of outdoor adventures without having to drive all over the place. Within Explore Park, you can hike, mountain bike, take a trail ride on horseback, paddle the Roanoke River, go tubing, pitch a tent, embark on an aerial adventure course, and more.
Explore Park is, as far as I know, the only public park and campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway that isn't run by the National Park Service. There are many different camping options at Explore Park. At Don's Cab-Inns, you can stay in a standard RV site with electricity hook-ups, a tiny cabin that sleeps between 4 and 6 people, or a yurt, which has electricity and a bathroom.
Another private company, Blue Mountain Adventures, offers primitive tent camping, and glamping tents, which I'll also review.
I stopped at Explore Park and Don's Cab-Inns Campground while road tripping on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. The campground opened in the fall of 2018, and everything still feels brand new. Of the 18 or so sites available, I think half of them were full during my visit on a weekend in early May.
The little cabins include a full-size bed below and another in the loft, air conditioning, heat, electricity, a microwave, a small refrigerator, and a coffee pot. There is a fire pit, water spigot, and picnic table outside the cabin, as well as a lovely front porch to relax on.
You do have to bring your own bed linens or a sleeping bag with you. The brand new bathhouse includes private bathrooms with showers, and there is a small store on site for buying ice, firewood, and necessities like bug spray or soap.
Cost for the small cabins is $75 per night. The yurts, which have the...

Charleston is the second largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, surpassed only by the state capital of Columbia. Charleston is the county seat of the modern Charleston County.
In 1670, Charleston was originally named Charles Towne. It moved to its present location on Oyster Point in 1680 from a location on the west bank of the Ashley River known as Albemarle Point. Charleston adopted its present name in 1783. In 1690, Charleston was the fifth largest city in North America, and remained among the ten largest cities in the United States through the 1840 census.
Charleston is known as The Holy City perhaps by virtue of the prominence of churches on the low-rise cityscape, perhaps because, like Mecca, its devotees hold it so dear], and perhaps for the fact that Carolina was among the few original thirteen colonies to provide toleration for all Protestant religions, though it was not open to Roman Catholics. Many Huguenots found their way to Charleston. Carolina also allowed Jews to practice their faith without restriction. Current trends put Charleston as the fastest-growing municipality in South Carolina. The city's metropolitan area population was counted by the 2010 census at 664,607 -- the second largest in the state -- and the 75th-largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States.
The city of Charleston is located just south of the midpoint of South Carolina's coastline, at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers, which flow together into the Atlantic Ocean. Charleston Harbor lies between downtown Charleston and the Atlantic Ocean. Charleston's name is derived from Charles Towne, named after King Charles II of England.
In 2011, Charleston was named #1 U.S. City by Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards and #2 Best City in the U.S. and Canada by Travel + Leisure's World's Best Awards. Also in 2011, Bon Appetit magazine named Husk, located on Queen Street in Charleston, the Best New Restaurant in America. America's most-published etiquette expert, Marjabelle Young Stewart, recognized Charleston 1995 as the best-mannered city in the U.S, a claim lent credibility by the fact that it has the first established Livability Court in the country. In 2011, Travel and Leisure Magazine named Charleston America's Sexiest City, as well as America's Most Friendly. Subsequently, Southern Living Magazine named Charleston the most polite and hospitable city in America. In 2012, Travel and Leisure voted Charleston as the second best-dressed city in America, only behind New York City.
South Carolina's Lowcountry holds a major place of importance in African-American history for many reasons, but perhaps most importantly as a port of entry for people of African descent. According to several historians, anywhere from 40 to 60 percent of the Africans who were brought to America during the slave trade entered through ports in the Lowcountry.
This has given the Lowcountry the designation among some as the Ellis Island for African Americans, although some dispute this term, as the Ellis Island immigrants arrived voluntarily as opposed to the Africans who were captured in the Atlantic slave trade.
According to Peter Wood in his book Black Majority: Negroes in Colonial South Carolina from 1670 to the Stono Rebellion, the successful cultivation of rice in the Lowcountry in the 1600s was a major factor in the importation of African labor. Sir Jonathan Atkins was quoted in 1680 as saying, Since people have found out the convenience and cheapness of slave labor they no longer keep white men, who formerly did the work on the Plantations. Joseph Corry, an Englishman who spent some time in what is now the West African nation of Sierra Leone, noted, Rice forms the chief part of the African's sustenance.
When further observation noted the skill of Africans in this region in cultivating rice, Africans from the vicinity of Sierra Leone and Ghana became especially sought-after by slave owners in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
The demand for Africans in the rice-growing regions was such that, By the time the (South Carolina) colony's Proprietors gave way to a royal government in 1720, Africans had outnumbered Europeans for more than a decade.
According to Elaine Nichols of the South Carolina State Museum, Sullivan's Island, an island near Charleston, was a major port of entry for enslaved Africans. Her paper Sullivan's Island Pest Houses: Beginning an Archeological Investigation (1989), detailed the phenomenon of Pest Houses, that were used to quarantine Africans upon their arrival, for fear that the Africans would have contagious diseases. The Africans would often remain confined from 10 to 40 days and 200-300 at a time would sometimes remain in isolation in the pest houses. By 1793, residents of Sullivan's Island demanded that the pest houses be removed from the vicinity.

Today, August 17, 2011 I payed a visit to old Rock Lake. I was surprised by what I found and spent some time with my video camera to have something to post for those that wonder what happened to the place. After its second iteration as a Putt Putt amusement it sat closed for a number of years but now its open to the public again but not as a pool. Watch my movie and see.

Sneaky Ways Movie Theaters Get You To Spend More Money
Between ticket prices and concessions, movie theaters are expensive. But movie theater chains like AMC and Regal only keep around 50% of the revenue from ticket sales each year. But theaters are able to keep over 80% of concessions revenue as profit. So most theaters are designed to get you to spend money on food. And it works, AMC reports that more than 71% of attendees spend money on concessions.

How to Pass Your Driving Road Test | Driving Lessons
Watch more How to Drive videos:
So what I want to do today is give you a good understanding of what to expect on a driver's road test, and give you some tips on how to pass the test.
And the test is basically a series of turns, some rights, and some lefts, and then two maneuvers, a broken U-turn, and parallel parking.
So for the right turn, where we'll start, the basic idea for the right turn is that you're going to have your car over to the right side of the lane that you're on and you're going to make sure you make the turn into the right lane of the street that you're going onto. Pretty much no guesswork in a right turn. It's always the same, from right to right at all times. Right lane to right lane.
The left turn is a lot trickier. And the left turn is the one that may get you on that road test. And the reason for the left turn being trickier is because you've got some decisions to make on the left. Do I make the turn into this lane or that lane? That will be determined whether or not that's a one-way or a two-way street. So you're ability to recognize that will be crucial on your road test.
What are some of the ways you can tell? A one-way street typically will have a sign on either corner. If you see a sign it's usually a one-way. It'll have an arrow on it. Therefore, the rule of thumb on the turns being closest to the available lane, if you see the one-way sign, the turn has to go into the left lane. If the street doesn't have a sign and it has a line down the middle, you can tell by the color of the line whether or not it's a one-way or a two-way. A white line would indicate one-way street. Again, you'll make your turn onto the left side. A yellow line indicates a two-way street, which means that you've got to make the turn out to the right side of the street.
The most difficult one will be the street that doesn't have the line on it. The way you can tell on a street like that, look for the direction of the parked cars. If they're parked in opposite directions, that's going to indicate a two-way street. Remember your rule of thumb, you choose the closest available lane, and you're going to swing out to the right. This is the turn that typically tricks people the most on the road test.
Your two maneuvers are a parking, and a broken U-turn. Broken U-turn real simple, you just pull over against the curb on the right, put your indicator on. The whole idea is to take your car from the right side here, bring it across to the other side, then you're going to back up, and then you're going to go back the same way you came on that roadway.
My tip for this is when you're doing the backing part, you don't want to back up all the way to the other curb, because usually when you do that you come out on the wrong side of the street.
The other maneuver is the parallel parking. Don't worry so much about it. You get a big space to park, and as long as you look back and go back slowly, it shouldn't be a problem for you.
And that's it. That's your road test. Usually six turns, three rights, three lefts, a park, a broken U-turn, and it's over in about 10 minutes.
Good Luck.
Berard - Halmar Bridge Project - Stamford, CT
Helping to build America’s infrastructure is something we’re proud to be a part of. The team traveled to Stamford, Connecticut to replace an existing 100+ year old steel girder rail bridge mainly used as a commuter rail line for patrons traveling into & out of NYC. The bridge wasn't built to meet the demands of 21st century traffic, thus the new bridge would be wider and taller, allowing for more vehicles to pass through at once as well as commercial trucks. The bridge was removed and replaced in (3) phases, first the south most section of the bridge was demoed and Berard brought in two pre-built spans that were adjacent to the existing bridge. Berard had to carefully place the bridge onto the bridge bearings for the piers/abutments and technical requirements per the DOT were that the bridge must be within ¼”. The 2nd bridge assembly area was adjacent to busy I-95 while also maintaining one open lane for South State Street traffic to pass. On July 4th Berard was allowed to transport (2) bridge sections in convoy .75 miles from the assembly area to the bridge construction site. Berard placed the bridge sections nearby and awaited the order to drive the sections into place. On July 5th, Berard transported the final (2) bridge sections to an area near the bridge and awaited orders to install. The Berard team finished the project on time, within budget, with no accidents or incidents and a very satisfied customer.

Places to see in ( Indianapolis - USA )
Places to see in ( Indianapolis - USA )
Indianapolis is in the Nine-County Region of Indiana, right at the center of the state. It is the state capital and largest city of Indiana, United States, and is in Marion County. The population within city limits is approximately 830,000 people, making it the 12th largest city in the US. The metropolitan area has about 2 million (23rd in the US). Indianapolis is also known as the Racing Capital of the World due to the proximity of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indy 500 and Allstate 400 at the Brickyard (formerly known as the Brickyard 400).
The name Indianapolis is simply Indiana joined with polis, the Greek word for city. The founders of Indianapolis expected it to be the Great Inland Port, but they neglected to consider the fact that the White River is impossible to navigate most of the year; other than during the spring, it is a melange of sandbars and temporary islands. However, this port-desire left the city with a beautiful, if useless, canal district.
The tallest building in Indianapolis is the Salesforce Tower, standing at 830 feet. The second is the One America Tower standings at 533 feet, and the third is the One Indiana Tower standing at a height of 504 feet. The fourth and fifth are the Market Tower (421 feet) and 300 North Meridian (408 feet). The sixth and seventh tallest are the M&I Plaza (401 feet), and the seventh tallest is the JW Marriott Indianapolis (376 feet): the JW Marriott Indianapolis is the tallest hotel in the state and the largest JW Marriott in the world.
Clean-cut Indy is the state capital and a perfectly pleasant place to ogle race cars and take a spin around the renowned speedway. The art museum and White River State Park have their merits, as do the Mass Ave and Broad Ripple hoods for eating and drinking. And fans of author Kurt Vonnegut are in for a treat. A swell walking and biking trail connects it all.
Indianapolis is called the Crossroads of America. The city is warm in the summer, with average highs in the mid-80s in June, July, and August. Indianapolis has a typical mid-western winter. January is the coldest month, with an average high of 34 degrees.
