STORYLINE:
A British woman who disappeared last week while vacationing in Jamaica was found dead on Friday, police said.
The body of 61-year-old Barbara Scott-Jones was found in a pit near the home where she was staying at in St. James, a parish in the island's northwest, said police
She likely died from a skull fracture, they added.
Police on the island have stepped up their search for a 30-year-old man, Omar Reid, who detectives want to question in connection with the death.
Reid has not been seen since Ms Scott-Jones went missing.
We're still appealing to Mr. Reid to come in because we need to speak to him and anybody knows of the whereabouts of Mr Reid to come and talk to the police and see how best we can bring closure to this situation, said Steve McGregor, the Superintendent of police in St James.
Scott-Jones was last seen on March 14 as she headed to Montego Bay to visit a friend, according to police.
The native from the northern British town of Leeds had been in Jamaica since January and was expected to return on April 1 to Britain, said police.
It is the first report of a tourist being killed in Jamaica this year.
More than 1,400 people were killed in Jamaica in 2007, including at least 19 police officers.
One local women said she was shocked and appalled because normally things don't happen like this in a community.

The Mandeville police are seeking the public's assistance in locating 23-year-old Alicia Ricketts, otherwise called 'Lisa', a store clerk of a Queens, New York address in the United States.
Ricketts is said to be of dark complexion, stout build, is about 168 centimetres (5 feet 6 inches) tall and was last seen wearing long, straight extensions in her hair.
Reports from the Mandeville police are that she entered the country on a flight from New York to Kingston on May 2 and has not been heard from since. She was last seen wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. Efforts to contact her have been futile.
Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Alecia Ricketts is being asked to contact the Mandeville police at 876-961-5538, police 119 emergency number or the nearest police station.
Meanwhile an Ananda Alert has been activated for 16-year-old Glacia Barnes of St. Margaret’s Bay in Portland, who has been missing since Tuesday, May 21.
She is of fair complexion, slim build and is about 163 (5 feet 4 inches) tall.
Reports from the Hope Bay Police are that Glacia was last seen leaving home in her school uniform—a burgundy skirt and a yellow house. All efforts to locate her have failed.
Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Glacia Barnes is being asked to contact the Hope Bay Police at 876-913-0202
An Ananda Alert has been activated for 12-year-old Keisha Trought student of Green Meadows Palmers Cross Clarendon ,who has been missing since Wednesday, May 22.
She is of dark complexion, medium build and is about 152 centimetres (5 feet) tall.
Reports from the May Pen Police are that about 9:00 a.m., Keisha was last seen at home wearing a blue jeans dress and a pair of black slippers. All efforts to locate her have failed.
Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Keisha Trought is being asked to contact the May Pen Police at 876-986-2208
Eighteen-year-old Amelia Gentles of Barbara Village, Phoenix Park in St. Catherine has been missing since Friday, May 24.
She is of brown complexion, stout build and is about 157 centimetres (5 feet 2 inches) tall.
Reports from the Portmore Police are that Gentles was last seen at home about 3:00 p.m., wearing a red spaghetti strap dress. All efforts to contact her have proven futile.

Jamaica gunman 'killed'
Police sources in Jamaica say the gunman who is believed to have shot dead an 8-year old British girl has been killed. Imani Green died after a man opened fire in her relative's shop on Friday,.
Jamaica schoolgirl murder: Police search for clues
Imani Green was standing inside a clapboard grocery store and bar with Jamaican relatives on Friday evening when a gunman wearing a hoodie shot the child in the head and shoulder before also shooting and wounding three adult members of her family.
The high command of Jamaica's police force said that Imani was killed in the normally quiet Red Dirt district of Duncans, in Trelawny parish.
The roadside business where the shooting occurred is apparently owned by a female relative of the slain girl. There have been no arrests.
Imani died from her injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital in nearby Falmouth, a historic coastal town that is home to the tourism-dependent Caribbean island's newest cruise ship port.
The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office said it was providing consular assistance to the family and working with authorities in Jamaica.

About
Freshwater Bay is one of the most picturesque beaches in West Wight and lies just to the South of the town of Freshwater. The beach is covered in a mixture of grey flint and chalk pebbles that make a unique sound as the waves rise and fall onto the shore. There is sand below the low water mark and some sandy areas to sit if you walk to the more eastern side of the bay. There is also a rock ledge revealed at low tide at this side, which is great for rockpooling with your kids.
The Bay has been hewn from the chalk cliffs that surround it by thousands of years of exposure to the waves and the small river that runs from here to Yarmouth. Now dammed at this end, leaving a marsh in the hollow of the bay area, the river Yar flows northwards from here and the sea wall and coastal road prevent its egress to the sea.
Smugglers once used the caves around the bottom of the chalk cliffs that are exposed at low tide – if you wish to explore them it is best to find a local guide as you can become cut off by the tide. Kayaking is the ideal way to see them and the other small bays, Watcombe and Scratchells, that are also hewn from the chalk. This beach is popular for surfing and watersports and boats will moor offshore to come ashore. The Freshwater Independent Lifeboat is launched from this bay when required by those in trouble at sea.
One of the oldest beach cafes, The Freshwater Bay Cafe, sits on the road through the bay, selling ice creams, cream teas and some beach goods and sundries. Opposite here the Albion Hotel houses a public bar and behind the bay is a large car park off of which is the Sandpipers Hotel: also a popular bar and eatery. You can access another cafe, The Dandelion, from a path on the eastern side of the bay (or drive up Gate Lane and turn off at the sign).
Top Tip:
Wait until an abnormally low tide (see tide tables) to walk across the rocky exposed ledge to see the caves and small bay to the western side of Freshwater Bay. Make sure to book some watersports tuition with Isle of Wight Adventure Activies at Afton Apple Farm nearby who operate from the Bay.
Getting There:
Freshwater Bay is serviced by the number 12 Southern Vectis bus and during the summer months the new Dinosaur Line will run from here to Ventnor and return.
