Parker Coonawarra Estate Wines | Winery | Vineyard, Coonawarra, South Australia Wine Guide - WBTL
This singular Coonawarra estate established by John Parker in 1985 produced some great wines during the 1990s, but only very recently added its own winemaking facility. The wines are made by Peter Lehmann . The focus of production is a single premium wine only made in top vintages – a Bordeaux-like approach that is also reflected in the provocative name, Terra Rossa First Growth. In other years (unlike Médoc classed growths) only the second wine, Terra Rossa Cabernet Sauvignon, is released. First Growth is based on Cabernet Sauvignon but also includes Merlot and Cabernet Franc and is aged in 100% new French oak. It is fully ripe and concentrated, if at times a little oaky, with an intense pure fruit core wed to ripe but powerful, textured tannins – it takes the best part of a decade to unfurl. The second wine, which is now aged exclusively in French oak, has recently been only a shade behind, nudging 4 stars. A Merlot is also made but is only available in very small quantities direct from the winery. Entry level wines under the Coonawarra Series label include a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz.
Andrew Hardy - Winemaker, Parker Coonawarra Estate
Andrew - a fifth generation Hardy - has a serious wine pedigree. His great great grandfather Thomas Hardy was known as the 'Father of the South Australian Wine Industry' after being an integral part of SA's entry into the wine world in the late 1800s.
Following the natural order of his family tree Andrew studied winemaking at the Riverina College of Advanced Education (now Charles Sturt University) before commencing his winemaking career in 1982, working for Brian Croser at Petaluma. During this period he also completed winemaking stints in California, Oregon and Bordeaux before coming back to take the reins at Knappstein, where he remained for almost a decade. Whilst in Clare, Andrew was awarded the Warren Winiarski Trophy for 'Best Cabernet in the World' and the Trophy for 'Best Australian Red Wine' for his Enterprise Cabernet. He was also pivotal in the industry's adoption of the screwcap closure.
Throughout his years at Petaluma Andrew also completed the Executive Program for Growing Companies at Stanford University, California, presided as Chairman of the Royal Adelaide Wine Show, was a member of the Clare Valley Winemakers Association and the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of SA boards, and is now Trustee of the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society.
In October 2018 Andrew joined James Lienert and Keeda Zilm to complete the Parker Coonawarra Estate winemaking team, bringing with him over 36 years of invaluable experience and knowledge.

Parker Coonawarra Estate | A wine legend in the making
Red Earth: Comparing Coonawarra Cabernet's....
The Dr and the Chef thought we would have a look at the Coonawarra's most famous wines..... Cabernet Sauvignon. The red earth of the terra rossa soils of the Coonawarra region in the South East of South Australia are famous for the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon that it produces. Many of Australia's most famous wine brands, and flagship Cabernet's are filled with fruit from this region. The Coonawarra has a reputation for being the place to buy a Cabernet from in Australia, if not the world.
So we delved into the wine cellar, and found two great Coonawarra Cabernet's to compare. Both coming from Coonawarra estate wineries, and both at the mid price point for quality. We thought we would compare:
Reschke Wines - The Bos. Cabernet Sauvignon RRP A35-$40
Parker Estate Wines - Terra Rossa Cabernet Sauvignon RRP A$ 35-40
These Cabernet's demonstrate all of the good things about a Coonawarra Cabernet, good drinking, not too expensive, and impressive. Watch this episode of the Dr and the Chef to find out more about what we thought of these great wines.
