Rwandans to elect new parliament
Rwanda will go to the polls on Monday for the country's third parliamentary elections since the genocide of 1994. But the party of President Paul Kagame says it has done everything it can to avoid political conflicts that have triggered violence in the past. Al Jazeera's Peter Greste reports from Kigali.
Rwanda Prepares For Parliamentary Elections
Voting is now underway in Rwanda, in the third parliamentary election, since the end of the genocide experienced in that country. Rwandans hope the vote, which has been relatively peaceful so far, will be a reflection of the country's democratic credentials. But some opposition leaders are saying the elections are simply a farce. They argue that the results of the parliamentary elections are already decided, with President Paul Kagame's Rwanda Patriotic Front expected to emerge victorious. The elections are also set to bring women to the forefront. In the previous parliament, women were the majority. With 56 percent of parliamentary seats held by women, Rwanda had the world's highest proportion of female political representatives, ahead of Sweden, which ranks fourth - after Andorra and Cuba.
