Parliament Building in Tarawa Atoll, Kiribati
In 1979 the Gilbert Islands, Banaba, the Phoenix and the Line Islands became the independent Republic of Kiribati. The Republic has a total land area of 810 square kilometres and consists of thirty three atolls and islands, spread across approximately a third of a million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean, of which 21 islands are inhabited.
The Kiribati Parliamentary system is quite unique in that it is a blend of both the British and American systems.
Te Beretitenti (President) is elected nationally. Members of the Cabinet are appointed by Te Beretitenti from amongst the Members of Parliament. The Speaker, although not a member of Parliament, is elected by the Members. The first form of a Parliamentary system began in 1963 with the establishment of the Advisory Council that had five elected members and some appointed ex-officio members. In 1967 the Advisory Council was replaced by the House of Representatives and the number of elected members was increased to twenty-three. The House of Representatives was replaced by the Legislative Council in 1970 and the number ofelected members further increased to twenty-eight while the number of ex-officio members decreased. In 1976 the House of Assembly replaced the Legislative Council. The House of Assembly continued until independence when it became the Maneaba ni Maungatabu with thirty-five elected members, one nominated member (from Rabi) and one ex-officio member (the Attorney-General). The number of elected members has, at the 2007 elections, increased to 44 making a 46 member unicameral parliament.
The President (Te Beretitenti) is both Head of State and Head of Government, and is nominated from among members of the Maneaba ni Maungatabu to be elected in a presidential election by universal adult suffrage. The President appoints his/her own Cabinet, which is composed of the President, Vice President, Attorney-General and no more than ten ministers selected from members of the Maneaba ni Maungatabu.

Walking Around Tarawa In Kiribati
Main Residency in Tarawa for the President of Kiribati : Feb & March 2013
Only a few min's walk from the Bairiki Square the business area in Tarawa, this is the residency of the President of Kiribati, while viewing the building from the road I get talking to the only local Taxi Driver & he also offers to take me to the Presidents weekend home, I'm not really sure if this is totally true, however I went along for the ride & relaxed in the area for a while taking to the taxi driver. Later I then returned back to Bairiki area,. I managed to re-visit the Presidents main home for a second occasion & filmed from outside, I got talking to a couple of the security guards & some guards were relaxed about filming the property while others were not so relaxed !!!! Using my camera appeared to be no problem.

Geography
Kiribati, formerly the Gilbert Islands, consists of three widely separated main groups of southwest Pacific islands: the Gilberts on the equator, the Phoenix Islands to the east, and the Line Islands farther east. Ocean Island, producer of phosphates until it was mined out in 1981, is also included in the 2 million square miles of ocean. Most of the islands of Kiribati are low-lying coral atolls built on a submerged volcanic chain and encircled by reefs.

History
Kiribati was first settled by early Austronesian-speaking peoples long before the 1st century A.D. Fijians and Tongans arrived about the 14th century and subsequently merged with the older groups to form the traditional I-Kiribati Micronesian society and culture. The islands were first sighted by British and American ships in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and the first British settlers arrived in 1837. A British protectorate since 1892, the Gilbert and Ellice Islands became a Crown colony in 1915–1916. Kiritimati (Christmas) Atoll became a part of the colony in 1919; the Phoenix Islands were added in 1937.
Tarawa and others of the Gilbert group were occupied by Japan during World War II. Tarawa was the site of one of the bloodiest battles in U.S. Marine Corps history when marines landed in Nov. 1943 to dislodge the Japanese defenders. The Gilbert Islands and Ellice Islands (now Tuvalu) were separated in 1975 and granted internal self-government by Britain. Kiribati became independent on July 12, 1979.

My Frigate Bird - A poem by His Excellency, President Taneti Maamau of Kiribati
Initially delivered at the General Debate of the 71st United Nations General Assembly (2016):
My Frigate Bird
Cloaked in black, white-bellied, and fork tailed, you are my beauty in the north
With your long and graceful wings, you are my inspiration in the center
As you speed across the deep vast ocean, you are my sanctuary in the south
With your clicking wheezy calls, you are my song and garland everywhere
On a banner of blue, white, yellow and red, you ascend beyond the waves and the sun rays
Now you struggle against storms and westerly winds to find food and nesting
But you will never leave in haste nor go in flight, for you are the fulcrum of the universe
Arise my frigate bird with valor and strength, rise over the perilous tides from the east
And fly brave and proud on the currents of wind, for you are and always will be my transformation
Proud am I to be an I-Kiribati – my frigate bird, my liberty, my identity.

SUMMARY
=======
Kiribati (), officially the Republic of Kiribati (Gilbertese: Ribaberiki Kiribati), is a country in Micronesia in the central Pacific Ocean. The permanent population is just over 110,000 (2015), more than half of whom live on Tarawa Atoll. The sovereign state comprises 32 atolls and reef islands and one raised coral island, Banaba. They have a total land area of 800 square kilometres (310 sq mi) and are dispersed over 3.5 million square kilometres (1.3 million square miles). Their spread straddles both the equator and the 180th meridian, although the International Date Line goes round Kiribati and swings far to the east, almost reaching the 150°W meridian. This brings the Line Islands into the same day as the Kiribati Islands. Kiribati's easternmost islands, the southern Line Islands, south of Hawaii, have the most advanced time on Earth: UTC+14 hours.
Kiribati became independent from the United Kingdom in 1979. The capital and now most populated area, South Tarawa, consists of a number of islets, connected by a series of causeways. These comprise about half the area of Tarawa Atoll.
Kiribati is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the IMF and the World Bank, and became a full member of the United Nations in 1999.
