Welcome to Shelly Beach
It’s been a big couple of years for the Parnkalla (Barngarla) community on Eyre Peninsula, in South Australia’s west.
On 22nd January, the Federal Court recognised and upheld the Aboriginal community’s claim for native title of an area that spans 44,500 square kilometres, which works out to about two thirds of Eyre Peninsula.
It’s been 19 years since they originally filed the native title claim, so you can imagine their delight at hearing the news. More here.
Not only has this just happened, but the Parnkalla community has also been very busy working with language experts to document and record their own language. Many words are used commonly by families around the region, others have been found in historical documents using many references and the knowledge of local Port Lincoln Parnkalla (Barngarla) elders.
As you can imagine, all words need to go through a stringent process, where they are checked and studied to ensure that they are indeed true original words of the Parnkalla (Barngarla) community.
The exciting thing is that the list grows longer every month. More and more words are added and they’re getting closer to being able to create a dictionary that will not only showcase their own language, but also allow it to be taught.
After writing a script in English, we decided that the best way to share a Parnkalla (Barngarla) story about a Shelly Beach was to do it by including local language into the story, just how it may be used today. The words used in this story were chosen from an approved words list.
The words include:
Kallinyalla – Port Lincoln
Yalanyi - Shelly Beach
Yarda – Land
Gooya – Fish
Wardana – Sea
Claw – Birri
Yoornoo – Sun
Yalardna – Oysters
Ganyabili – Rocks
Ganya – Rock
Katta – Stick
Boodnoo – Scrub
Ngawaibili – Mothers
Gadabiri – Dolphins
Wiidi – Laugh
Bau - Goodbye
So for now, bau!
