LOOTSI APARTMENT in Tallinn, Estonia; designed by Hayashi Grossschmidt Architects
Lootsi Apartment in Tallinn is a modern building, designed by Hayashi Grossschmidt Architects. The partners of this design studio are Hanno Grossschmidt from Estonia and Tomomi Hayashi from Japan. The name of the project comes from the street, where it is located. It is in the neighborhood of Tallinn port, a region which was developed in the mid of 90s.
As the façade materials the architects of Lootsi Apartment used colored glass with textures and panels with wood veneer. However, for me most interesting part of the project was not its materials.
The building is on a triangle shaped plot and on each edge of that plot, the building steps back and gives us, to pedestrians some more spaces. These extra rooms are working as public areas, which I admire a lot.
Although the interiors of the housing units are not as tempting as the building’s urban touch, I still think it is a nice project to talk about.

Estonian NATIONAL MUSEUM | Tartu | Estonia
Estonian National Museum (ERM) as a museum of Estonian people helps interpret being Estonian, carry the basic values of the nation, and guard its continuity. For visitors opens, both a material and virtual world, that invites visitors to discover, realize, and become part of it.
The museum has two permanent exhibitions. Encounters is an exhibition about ordinary Estonian folk who have lived in this country through the ages. The echoes of Ural presents the traditional everyday culture of Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic people.
In addition to exhibitions, the premises include a cinema and a conference hall, a black box theatre, a café, a restaurant, and museum shop.

[RUS] Эстонский Национальный Mузей (ERM) — это национальный музей, который осмысляет понятие эстонской сущности, является носителем основных ценностей народа и хранителем преемственности. Посетителям откроется как предметный, так и виртуальный мир, зовущий к открытиям, осознанию и манящий принять во всём самостоятельное участие.
В музее есть две постоянных выставки. «Встречи» — это выставка об обычных эстонских людях, которые жили на этой земле во все времена. Выставка «Отголосок Урала» знакомит с традиционной культурой быта финно-угров и самоедов.

Tallinn is a compact seaside town of contrasts and its medieval old town, defence structures and wooden suburbs are its most valuable architectural pearls.
Some people say that Tallinn is similar to Helsinki, while it reminds others of Prague. In the 19th century, our capital was called the Naples of Scandinavia, but Tallinn is, indeed, still Tallinn.
Old churches, buildings and fortifications have been magnificently preserved in the Old Town. Just step outside the Old Town and cross the street where you will find yourself in the ultramodern Rotermann Quarter with the old suburb of Kalamaja located opposite. The area mostly consists of wooden buildings that once accommodated fishermen. At present, it is one of the most well-known residential areas for hipsters in Europe. In Kadriorg, a baroque palace and modern art museum Kumu stand alongside each other. These two are adjoined by the picturesque quarter that even today exhibits a 19th century provincial atmosphere. In the centre of town, the pre-war strict and integrated architecture representative of the Republic of Estonia is mixed with Soviet buildings. Below you can read about the various architectural styles represented in Tallinn. Each description of a style will also include examples that can be admired throughout the town.

Northern Tallinn - NOBLESSNER | Seaplane Harbour Lennusadam | Patarei Sea Fortress and Former Prison
Take a small walking tour through the Northern part of Tallinn. The former submarine shipyard Noblessner is the fastest developing, and thus the most interesting, area in Tallinn today. Situated next to the trendy Kalamaja district and the renowned Seaplane Harbour, Noblessner is filled with sounds of drilling and hammering. The old factory halls are waking up to a new life, and the newly built apartment blocks already house more than 200 homes.
The most exciting maritime museum in Europe is located in the Seaplane Harbour! About 200 authentic items are on display at the historical seaplane hangar: a submarine called Lembit, a century-old icebreaker Suur Tõll, a seaplane called Short 184, remains of the oldest ship found in Estonia, and much more.
Patarei fortress in Tallinn, part of European architectural heritage, is a Classical defensive structure that has retained its stylistic purity. This is a memorial to the victims of communism and fascism, as well as a meaningful symbol of resistance on the part of martyrs of the Republic of Estonia. The construction of Patarei Sea Fortress started under the orders of Nicholas I in 1828. After completion, it began operating as an artillery battery. The premises covering four hectares have had different functions – barracks and a prison.

В исторических ангарах гидросамолетов выставлено около 200 подлинных экспонатов: настоящая подводная лодка «Лембит», столетний ледокол «Суур Тылль», гидросамолет Short 184, остов самого старого эстонского корабля, и т. д. Работают кафе MARU и музейный магазин.
Батарейная морская крепость, относящаяся к европейским памятникам архитектуры, является классицистическим защитным сооружением, сохранившим чистоту стиля. Это памятник жертвам коммунизма и нацизма, а также мощный символ сопротивления мучеников Эстонской Республики. Строительство Батарейной морской крепости было начато по распоряжению Николая I в 1828 году. После окончания строительства она начала действовать в качестве артиллерийской батареи, расположенное на четырех гектарах строение было казармой и тюрьмой.

PÜHTITSA Russian Orthodox Convent | Kuremäe | Estonia
Pühtitsa Convent is a Russian Orthodox convent in Eastern Estonia (Ida-Viru County) between Lake Peipus and the Gulf of Finland. A small Orthodox Christian church was built in Pühtitsa in the 16th century. The convent was founded in 1891 and has grown into the largest Orthodox community in the Baltic states.
The convent is located on a site known as Pühitsetud (blessed in Estonian) since ancient times. According to a legend, a shepherd from the village of Kuremäe witnessed a divine revelation near a spring of water to this day venerated as holy. Later in the 16th century, locals found an ancient icon of Dormition of the Mother of God under a huge oak tree. The icon still belongs to the convent.
The Pühtitsa Convent and the Pskov-Caves Monastery were the only monasteries in the Soviet Union that did not suspend their activities throughout the 20th century. By 1991, the Pühtitsa monastic community consisted of 161 nuns.

Пюхтицкий Успенский монастырь (эст. Pühtitsa Jumalaema Uinumise naisklooster) — православный женский ставропигиальный монастырь Русской православной церкви, расположенный в деревне Куремяэ волости Иллука (Ида-Вируский уезд Эстонии). Пюхтица (Pühtitsa) по-эстонски означает «святое место». Основан в 1891 году. В 2012 году в обители было около 120 монахинь и послушниц.
История создания обители связана с образом Успения Божией Матери: по преданию, в районе, где ныне располагается монастырь, местным жителям явилась Богородица, и на месте её явления была найдена Успенская икона Божией Матери. В XVI веке местные жители рядом с дубом, где была найдена икона, построили часовню иконы Божией Матери.

It has become one of the must-see events in Europe. The Tallinn Christmas market delights everyone with its coziness, historical location, wonderfully preserved medieval old buildings and long traditions. In recent years, the Tallinn Christmas market has a number of times been elected as one of the best Christmas markets in the world.
For children, entertainment is provided by carousels and Santa Claus, who distributes candy in his little house to those who are better at reciting verses. Five municipalities and institutions from the partner towns of Phini-Cyprus, Nowosolna-Poland, Campina-Romania, Parnu-Estonia and Gerace-Italy worked together on the Grundtvig project “Elder and young people live and work together” and they prepared a common DVD with traditional dances and songs of the five partner countries.

Toshiko Mori: Transforming Communities through Architecture
Good design can have a profound impact on local art and communities, as exemplified by the Setouchi region of Japan. In the post-World War II period, there was significant patronage of modern art and architecture in this region. In 1958, Kenzo Tange, whose work combines modern architecture with traditional Japanese techniques and symbolism, designed Kagawa Prefecture's governmental office building. This sparked an artistic renaissance, and the area has become an internationally acclaimed creative hub centered around the Setouchi Art Triennale. At this talk, Prof. Toshiko Mori, founder of Toshiko Mori Architect PLLC and Professor of Architecture at Harvard University, examines this unique artistic and architectural phenomenon. She will also touch on her two projects in villages in Senegal that share a similar ambition to create peace and stability by integrating contemporary architecture with vernacular buildings and local culture. Moderated by Prof. Nader Tehrani, Dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union and Principal of NADAAA.
Toshiko Mori, FAIA is the founding principal of Toshiko Mori Architect PLLC in New York City and the Robert P. Hubbard Professor in the Practice of Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where she was chair of the Department of Architecture from 2002 to 2008.
Her firm’s recent work includes master plans for the Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch and the Buffalo Botanical Gardens; Thread, a cultural center and artists’ residences in Senegal; and Fass School and Teachers’ Residence in Senegal; and the Brown University Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. Their projects have been exhibited internationally and have received awards from Architizer, The Plan, and the AIA. Recent publications include features of the Fass School and Teachers’ Residence was in Architectural Record, of Treeline in Architectural Digest, and an interview in Monocle.
She has been awarded the Academy Award in Architecture, from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; the AIA New York Chapter Medal of Honor; and the 2016 ACSA Tau Sigma Delta National Honor Society Gold Medal; and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. She recently received the 2018 Maine in America Award and the 2019 AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education, and was honored at the Longhouse Reserve’s annual winter benefit. She will receive the OMI Arts Leadership Award in 2019.
Nader Tehrani is a founding principal of NADAAA, a practice dedicated to the advancement of design innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an intensive dialogue with the construction industry. He is also Dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at the Cooper Union. His work has been recognized with notable awards, including the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture, the United States Artists Fellowship in Architecture and Design, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture, and eighteen Progressive Architecture Awards. He served as the Frank O. Gehry International Visiting Chair in Architectural Design at the University of Toronto and is currently the inaugural Paul Helmle Fellow at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He also recently was the William A. Bernoudy Architect in Residence at the American Academy in Rome.
