Béziers Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in Béziers, France. The edifice dates from the thirteenth century, having been erected on the site of an earlier building that was destroyed during the Massacre at Béziers in the Albigensian Crusade. The cathedral was formerly the seat of the Bishopric of Béziers, which was dissolved by the Concordat of 1801 and annexed into the Diocese of Montpellier.
The Saint-Nazaire and Saint Celse cathedral is a Gothic monument located in Béziers in the French department of Hérault and the Occitanie region . The cathedral is built in the western part of the old medieval town, on an eminence which dominates the plain of the Orb spreading below. The cathedral is the subject of a classification as historical monuments by the list of 1840.
Built on the site of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Augustus and his wife Livia. Written mentions the existence of a building from the viii th century. A Romanesque church existed on the site of the present cathedral. At the Béziers sack , July 22, 1209, a fire caused the entire destruction of the building. The Cathedral reconstruction work began in the middle of the xiii th century. The building is partly built on an old cemetery. The cathedral is dedicated to the saints Nazaire and Celsus.

Places to see in ( Beziers - France ) Eglise de la Madeleine
The church of the Madeleine is probably not as important as the cathedral of Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse but it is marked by history. It is indeed in this church that on July 22, 1209 several hundreds of Biterrois were murdered by the Crusaders of Simon de Montfort! The church is mentioned in the 11th century, it is Romanesque, its plan is basilical and imposing, the nave is 53 meters long! Little decorated, if not by these small billets - a sort of small sculpted cylinder - which run on the top of the wall, the church is still crowned by a pretty Gothic bell tower. Same thing inside, sobriety is needed: a skylight, large arches and a frame.
One of the most revered sanctuaries of Béziers. Cited for the first time in 1092, it was the parish of the Consuls. This beautiful Romanesque church with its bell tower partly Gothic, was very reworked over the centuries.
In these places occurred the greatest drama of the history of Béziers. It is here, July 22, 1209, feast of the Holy Madeleine, that the crusaders of Simon de Montfort massacred and slaughtered 7000 Biterrois - men women and children - who thought to find there a refuge there. Then they burned the church. The sanctuary still bears the scars of this fire.

On a rocky crag beside the River Orb, Béziers is an understated city a few kilometres in from the Mediterranean and its long sandy beaches. These old stone streets are rarely swamped with tourists, but for five days in mid-August the Féria de Béziers brings a program of bullfights, and aficionados pour into the city.
Sightseers should begin with the Orb, which is crossed by a quaintly irregular medieval bridge far below the cathedral. And conversely, the boundless views across the river plain from this church are a real spectacle. The Orb, Canal du Midi and the Haut Languedoc Regional Park all promise outdoor escapades, and winery tours will also be on the menu in the world’s largest wine region.
The town is located on a small bluff above the river Orb, about 10 km (6.2 mi) from the Mediterranean coast, and 75 km southwest of Montpellier. At Béziers, the Canal du Midi spans the river Orb as an aqueduct called the Pont-canal de l'Orb, claimed to be the first of its kind. Béziers is one of the oldest cities in France. Research published in March 2013 shows that Béziers dates from 575 BC, making it older than Agde (Greek Agathe Tyche, founded in 525 BC) and a bit younger than Marseille (Greek Massalia, founded in 600 BC).
The site has been occupied since Neolithic times, before the influx of Celts. Roman Betarra was on the road that linked Provence with Iberia. The Romans refounded the city as a new colonia for veterans in 36–35 BC and called it Colonia Julia Baeterrae Septimanorum. Stones from the Roman amphitheatre were used to construct the city wall during the 3rd century. White wine was exported to Rome. A dolia discovered in an excavation near Rome is marked I am a wine from Baeterrae and I am five years old; another simply white wine of Baeterrae. It was occupied by the Moors between 720 and 752.
