Colonial City - or Zona Colonial - is an historic district located in the Dominican Republic's capital of Santo Domingo.
Founded in 1498, it's considered the oldest European settlement of the New World. Colonial City’s classic architecture is evident in various landmarks, buildings and cathedrals and has withstood the passage of time.

STORY: The Dominican Republic has announced that celebrations to mark
Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Caribbean Republic five
centuries ago are to be scaled down. The decision followed the
killing of a human righs leader during a demonstration against the
planned festivities, which were to include the inauguration of a huge
lighthouse. Slums were razed in Santo Domingo and their inhabitants
left homeless, to build this controversial monument dedicated to the
explorer. Instead, President Joaquin Balaguer intends to take part
in a mass celebrated at the site in October by Pope John Paul II.

Walking tour around Parque Colon, Calle El Conde, Zona Colonial. Dominican Republic.
A first-person perspective walk tour starting in conde street and continues in front of Parque de colon, one of the most emblematic places of Zona Colonial, in santo domingo, Dominican republic. Despite some elements appears just in time (for my own surprise) all in this video is pure spontaneus and non planned.
This area is full of historic heritage, because contains not only the first national goberment palace, and first cathedral, but also the first hotel in the city and first beautiful arts school in dominican republic. All of this in a very short street section. In this area you find a wonderful pizza, relaxing ambient and 8 beautiful bars and restaurants with many gastronomical offers.
Near to this place is the chocolate museum whit organic, all natural chocolate recipes and products. Also this area contains a ambar store and tobaco making factory, and an small shopping center. I like this place so much....

Join me as we explore Zona Colonial Santo Domingo including Plaza de España, Museo de las Casas Reales, Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando, Alcázar de Don Diego Colón, Palacio Consistorial de Santo Domingo colonial, Parque Colon (Columbus Park), and wandering the old city streets.
Parque Colon is a main city square featuring a prominent Christopher Columbus statue bordered by the oldest cathedral in the Americas.
Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando hotel was built as part of the 1502 architectural building boom and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located just off Calle de Damas, with easy walking access around the colonial zone of the old city.
Just beyond the wall of the city is the passenger & cargo ferry that travels between Santo Domingo and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The ferry travels 13 hours overnight for a mini one-night cruise in the Atlantic Ocean between islands. Flights under an hour and typically cost $150 each way, the ferry is similarly priced at $200 per person round trip.

Santo Domingo, also called La Capital, is the capital of the Dominican Republic, with its collage of cultures and neighborhoods. This is where the sounds of life, domino pieces slapped on tables, backfiring mufflers and horns from chaotic traffic, merengue and bachata music blasting from corner stores are most intense. At the heart of the city is the Zona Colonial, declared world heritage by UNESCO, where you'll find the oldest cathedral and the oldest surviving European fortress, among other New World firsts.

Santo Domingo and the Dominican Republic as a whole, is so much more than sunshine, rum, beaches and pooles. This place is historical and the people are in general friendly and helpful, but keep in mind that this is a poor country and crimes to occur. Don't flash your camera, laptop, jewelry or an expensive wrist watch and keep your eyes open for dodgy caracters, and you will have a lovely time in Santo Domingo!

Ciudad Colonial de Santo Domingo
La Ciudad Colonial, es uno de los destinos turísticos más importantes de Santo Domingo y entre los más visitados de República Dominicana. La Ciudad Colonial es justo el lugar donde empezó la historia del Nuevo Mundo. Se encuentra ubicada del lado oriental de la desembocadura del río Ozama. Fue fundada por Bartolomé Colón el 5 de agosto de 1496 y trasladada luego al lado occidental en 1502 por Nicolás de Ovando. Fue además la primera ciudad a la que la Corona Española otorgó la Carta Real y sede central de la administración del Nuevo Mundo.
En los inicios del siglo XVI, se levantaron en La Española las primeras viviendas coloniales del Nuevo Mundo o del Continente Americano. Estas primeras casas, surgieron como producto de una necesidad obligatoria de alojamiento para los conquistadores españoles e inmigrantes, por lo que fueron levantadas en la parte este del río Ozama las primeras viviendas, fundadas por el gran almirante y por su hermano Bartolomé Colón, aunque posteriormente fue trasladada a la parte oeste del río.
Este poblado fue llamado bajo el nombre de La Isabela, aunque tiempo después fue bautizada por su original nombre de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, el cual había tenido su asiento original, en la margen oriental del río Ozama. Existían, además, otros centros históricamente vinculados a la empresa conquistadora, de índole militar y económico, muchos de los cuales han desaparecido con el paso del tiempo.

En 1507, la ciudad recibió el estatuto real de ser la primera ciudad europea en el Nuevo Mundo, por órdenes generales de la Corona Española. Con este mandato se recibe también el privilegio de un escudo de armas, el cual era representado por dos leones dorados que tienen en lo alto una corona de oro, la cual representaba la Corona Española, y separados por una llave azul.
Esta área de Santo Domingo cuenta con edificios coloniales y calles con vetustos adoquines de gran atractivo turístico, como son el Alcázar de Colón (que perteneció a Diego Colón, hijo de Cristóbal Colón), el Museo de las Casas Reales, la Catedral Primada de América y la Fortaleza Ozama. La mayoría de los hoteles están en la Calle El Conde y Calle Las Damas.
