HAVANA, CUBA WALKING TOUR - Plaza Vieja to Cruise Terminal
How do we afford to travel so often? We're lucky enough to stay for almost free in every city, using
Walk the most beautiful part of Old Havana, moments from the Havana Cruise Port at Christmas.
We walk along Calle Mercaderes, seeing multicoloured statues through open doors, passing Plaza de Simon Bolivar on the corner of Calle Obrapía, the greenery of Guayasamín Park, and then follow the sounds of the street performers into the grand Havana Old Square (Plaza Vieja de La Habana.)
This famous square is home to the excellent coffee house Café El Escorial, and the bar La Vitrola, where Madonna famously danced on the bar as she celebrated her 58th birthday.
We walk back along the restaurants and cafes on Calle Mercaderes before turning right on Calle Amargura to reach Plaza de San Francisco. Paved with cobblestones, and facing the harbour, this plaza is home to the Fuente de los Leones fountain.
From here, the Cuba Cruise Port Terminal, Terminal Sierra Maestra is directly ahead, across the pedestrian crossing.

Cuba - Reconstruction
RR9551/B - CUBA: RECONSTRUCTION
(dur: 10 min 43 sec/eng. sot: 50 sec/ Spanish sot: 45 sec/
French sot: 45 sec)
Old Havana, the heart of the Cuban capital, was declared a World
Heritage site by UNESCO in 1981, some two decades after the
revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power, when much of the
city's colonial infrastructure was already in great need of
repair. The UNESCO intervention triggered interest from the
international community, but funds were insufficient. As a
result, although some of the capital's most prestigious
historical buildings were restored, the renovation process could
not keep up with the general decay. But since the legalisation
of the U.S. dollar in 1993 new income has been generated for the
City Historian's Office which is now actively engaged in
co-ordinating the reconstruction and refurbishment of Old
Havana.

Reporter: How are you feeling today?
Well, like every day. Well, thank God.
Reporter: And your brother?
Well I don't know how he is at the moment.
Reporter: Have you heard anything about him?
Today, no I haven't heard anything.
Reporter: And yesterday?
Yesterday morning, I had information that he was...that he had left intensive care. But anything more, no. I haven't had any other information today.

SOUNDBITE (English) Juanita Castro , Fidel Castro's Sister:
He's very sick. That's it. I don't have any other information, unfortunately. This is my communication right now with the regime.

SOUNDBITE (English) Juanita Castro , Fidel Castro's Sister:
I like democracy. I fight for democracy for my country. It's the only thing. They can't, nobody can misinterpret my position, because it's my brother. A lot of Cuban people have gone to Cuba to visit family. I respect this determination. I never condemn anybody to go to Cuba . And in the same way, nobody has the right to condemn me because I am sad for this situation.
Reporter: You still care about your brother, yeah?
Of course, it's my family. It's my brother. We are separated for political reasons, ideological reasons, but that's it. Blood is strong. The relation between brother and sister, father and mother, is very strong.
Cutaway of reporters
SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Juanita Castro , Fidel Castro's Sister:
Actually, as the human being that I am, as the blood sister that I am, well, I feel affected, saddened.
