The Wonders of Cayman Brac - 4k - Aerial
Cayman Brac and little Cayman are the two sister islands of Grand Cayman. This little known jewel of the Caribbean is a 14 square mile island just 30 minutes from Grand Cayman by air. Cayman Brac is known for its breathtaking bluff and rugged terrain. Cayman Brac is off of the beaten path and is reminiscent of the Caribbean 50 years ago.
For the adventure lovers there are many activities including: hiking, rock climbing, bird watching in the parrot preserve and along the cliffs, fishing, bike riding, kayaking, paddle boarding and exploring the many caves. The most popular activity, however, is the world class scuba diving and snorkeling found in its crystal clear protected waters.
Cayman Parrots in the Wild
Cayman Parrots foraging/feeding in a tree just outside of George Town, Grand Cayman. This pair was in a tree just down the street from where my Mom and her fiance live. Cayman Parrots are the national bird of the Cayman Island and are a subspecies of the Cuban Amazon.
Grand Cayman Parrots Calling
This breeding pair of Grand Cayman Parrots live at the Turtle Farm at Boatswain's Bay in Grand Cayman. I'm not quite sure what has them all excited, but they are beautiful birds and a lot of fun to observe. Cayman Parrots are struggling due in part to habitat loss and destruction, as well as poaching by black market parrot traders who will chop down the tree to steal the chicks and sell them. These parrots nest in old trees and use the same nesting site every year. Hurricanes and storms also have an impact on the population; the Cayman Brac Parrot's numbers have been dramatically reduced due to tropical storms. It is illegal to remove a Cayman Parrot from the wild and they are a protected species.

Cayman Islands - wildlife and heritage
Watch the three-part Britain's Treasure Islands documentary series on BBC FOUR, starting Tue 12 Apr 2016 21:00. (repeated Wed 13 Apr 2016 20:00).
This mini-documentary explores the wildlife and conservation of the Cayman Islands, a UK Overseas Territory in the Caribbean comprising Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. All three islands are home to a staggering diversity of wildlife that occurs in tropical dry forests, mangrove forests and vast seabird colonies. In this film, we encounter fiddler crabs, snakes, land hermit crabs, exquisite orchids and many unique birds that occur no where else on Earth. The Cayman Islands are also home to two unique iguanas, both of which are critically rare. Grand Cayman's blue iguana is so called for its striking blue colouration. The blue iguana was predicted to become extinct, but conservationists acted just in time by setting up a very successful breeding programme, and the species has been saved for the future. Off shore, diverse coral reefs are renowned across the world, and are the site for immense grouper spawning aggregations - including the largest remaining aggregation events left in the Caribbean.
This film is one of forty mini-documentaries made from the footage not used in the broadcast series.

Now & Then Exhibition: National Gallery Cayman Islands
Running from 11th October - 11th December at The National Gallery in the Cayman Islands the exhibition: Now & Then.
Sponsored by Susan A. Olde OBE.
A masterful collaboration between two great photographers, of the past: Joseph Steinmetz & present: Courtney Platt.
The images in Now and Then illustrate the gigantic leap that we have taken as a society. Working with archival photographs from the Cayman Islands National Archive (CINA) and the Cayman Free Press Steinmetz Collection, photographer Courtney Platt has replicated and digitally merged the past and present to provide a window into this bygone era.
Past and current landmarks, buildings, events and generations of people blend together in a surreal, and at times, haunting mixture of imagery. They evoke a way of life that is rapidly becoming confined to memory and remind us of the importance of preserving our unique heritage before it is lost forever.
