Parry Kauri Park, Warkworth, Auckland
Parry Kauri Park, Warkworth
On the way back to Auckland, we stopped by Warkworth museum, but we did not go inside as the museum was closed at 3 pm. We saw a big Kauri tree standing in the front the carpark and we decided to have a look. This giant is 800 year-old and goes by the name McKinney Kauri .
We took a half hour walk through the boardwalks. The trail was great as we were surrounded by native trees and birds singing. It was also very easy to walk in and after 15 minutes we reached the lookout platform.
The information is from the website
The Warkworth and District Museum is located in the beautiful Parry Kauri Park. Take an easy stroll along one of the well-made boardwalks, through the native bush, to the lookout and kauri tree grove.
Kauri can grow to over 50 m tall, with trunk girths up to 16 m, and live for over 2,000 years. New Zealand’s largest kauri, Tane Mahuta, is on the West Coast

There was a cleaning station to clean the shoes before entering the park.

Parry Kauri Park in Warkworth north of Auckland is currently free of the microscopic tree pathogen, which mainly travels in the dirt on people’s shoes.
Ray Jensen, who is President of Kauri Native Bushmen's Association, believes the 1.8km of boardwalk they installed in Parry Kauri Park, as well as new cleaning stations, have prevented the area from being infected.
Despite these measures, Mr Jensen says they're very concerned the disease could enter the park.
The buses come here to bring people who want to see a kauri tree, because the other reserves in the area are being closed off due to kauri dieback.

Phoenix Reef, Anchor Bay, Tawharanui Regional park
During the two weeks school holiday, we explored the Matakana region in upper north area of Auckland. We went to the popular Matakana farmer Saturday market, where you can taste delicious food, and buy fresh veges and fruits. After visiting the market, we drove 25 minutes to Tawharanui Regional park, which is New Zealand's first open sanctuary which integrates conservation, sustainable farming and recreation. The park has beautiful white sand beaches, and interesting rocks to climb such as Phoenix Reef
On the way back to Auckland we visited Parry Kauri park in Warkworth and saw the nearly 1000 years old Kauri tree.
The information below is from the website
Set on a remote peninsula, Tawharanui Regional Park boasts some of Auckland most beautiful white sand beaches, rolling pastures, shingled bays, native coastal forest and regenerating wetlands. Tawharanui Regional Park is New Zealand's first open sanctuary which integrates conservation (dogs are strictly forbidden), sustainable farming and recreation.
Tawharanui Regional Park offers a large Department of Conservation campground for tents and motorhomes (Bookings are advisable). Walking tracks take in spectacular views of the bays and marine park, established over thirty years ago, which provides a good time for divers, snorkelers and bird watchers.
Tāwharanui is a 90km or 80 minute drive from central Auckland.

Kauri dieback – clean your shoes to prevent spread
About a fifth of Auckland's Waitakere Ranges is now affected by a disease that is killing native kauri. According to the Auckland Council, kauri dieback infestation has more than doubled in the last five years, from seven per cent to 19 percent, with a disappointing 83 percent of park visitors walking past cleaning stations without scrubbing their shoes, going off-track or disregarding closed tracks. The Auckland Council is urging the public to clean their shoes to save the kauri. While the council manages nearly 300km of the Waitakere park ranges, a recent survey has confirmed that more than 80km runs through infected areas.
