Parsis Fear Mumbai Metro Construction Will Affect Ancient Fire Temples
Members of the Parsi community are demanding the realignment of Mumbai's Metro III project fearing damage to their religious shrines. Several Parsis gathered at these sites yesterday to draw the government's attention. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation's (MMRC) Metro III project is completely underground and will connect Colaba in south Mumbai to Bandra and Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ) in the western suburbs of the city.

Parsis gather at Fire Temple - place of worship for Zoroastrians
Parsi community of India gather to celebrate Navroze Festival as their New Year at Parsi Anjuman hall in Delhi.
For about three hundred years after landing at Sanjan, a town in Gujarat, Parsis are said to have lived in peace. By that time their numbers had greatly increased. Sanjan is believed to have been founded by Zoroastrian refugees who sought asylum in Gujarat. Those Zoroastrians, whose descendants are today known as the Parsis. From the time on, the New year Festival or Navroze is still celebrated by the community with much fervour marking the arrival of Parsi community in India.
Parsi community in Delhi on Monday, the18th of August, welcomed a new year and celebrated Navroze, in accordance to the calendar followed by a sect of Zoroastrians. The Delhi Parsi Anjuman on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, which houses the only Fire temple in the city and a dharamshala, was abuzz with preparations for the evening function.
Delhi Parsi Anjuman celebrated Navroze, with friends and loved ones. About hundreds of guests attended the function. Minister for Minority Affairs Najma Heptulla was the chief guest of the function and Rohinton Fali Nariman, newly appointed judge to the Supreme Court was felicitated that evening. A stall selling Parsi products were also displayed for sale during the festival.

The ritual fire in the Atash Behram of Udvada, a sleepy little coastal town in Gujarat, has been burning for over a 1000 years.
The Udvada Atash Behram, also known as the Iran Shah, King of Iran, is a temple in Udvada, Gujarat on the west coast of India. It is one of the eight fire temples (holy place of worship) of the Zoroastrian religion in the country. The Atash Bahram, meaning Victorious Fire, is one of the oldest fire temples in India, dated to the eight century, and represents the historical cultural and religious links with Iran. The current temple was built in 1742 by Dinshaw Dorabjee Mistry from Bombay. The temple structure, built spaciously, is well decorated and contains the Dasturji Koyaji Mirza hall and a museum. The main hall of the temple is accessed through a two-stage staircase. The temple attracts Zoroastrian pilgrims from all parts of India, Pakistan and from around the world.

Udvada, a small coastal village, of about 2 square kilometres (0.77 sq mi) area,[3] is on the southern coast of Gujarat. The village was gifted to the priests by the king of Mandvi. It is approachable by road and rail. It is 206 kilometres (128 mi) away from Mumbai towards the north, situated between Vapi town and Daman on the National Highway (NH8) which passes through Manor. The nearest railway station is also in Udvada which is on the Virar-Surat section.

How to get there
By road: Surat lies 234 km from Ahmedabad, 131km from Vadodara, and 297 km from Mumbai. Bus stations, both ST and private, are on the eastern edge of the city.
By rail: Train stations is well connected on the eastern edge of the city.
By air: Various domestic flights connecting metros and other major cities are operational from the Surat Airport.

A Parsi woman's right for her religious identity
Goolrookh Gupta is a Parsi by birth who married outside her religion. She is fighting a case against the Parsi Anjuman of her native town, Valsad, that prohibits Parsi women like her, who are in an inter-faith marriage, from entering the sacred Fire Temple and the Temple of Silence to perform the last rites of their parents when the time comes. Goolrookh, and many others within the community, feel that these 'arbitrary' rules need to change. She is awaiting the final verdict in her case in the Supreme Court which gave an interim ruling in December, 2017, in her favour.

A fire temple in Zoroastrianism is the place of worship for Zoroastrians. In the Zoroastrian religion, fire (see Atar), together with clean water (see Aban), are agents of ritual purity. Clean, white ash for the purification ceremonies [is] regarded as the basis of ritual life, which, are essentially the rites proper to the tending of a domestic fire, for the temple [fire] is that of the hearth fire raised to a new solemnity (Boyce, 1975:455)

Mumbai: Parsis oppose construction of Metro Phase III under Fire Temple
After fears of structural damage alienated, the Parsi Community of Mumbai is worried about the spiritual damage of the fire temples. The dwindling Parsi Community has been knocking on all doors possible to get the Metro Rail Link Alignment changed so that it does not pass from under the sacred Wadia and Parsi Fire Temples or Atash Behrams in Mumbai. A petition signed by 11,000 people was written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the month of October, which claimed that the metro if built, will diminish spiritual powers and unleash dark forces.

Zoroastrian Prayer
Zoroastrianism is one of the world's oldest religions, pre-dating Jewish, Christian, and Islamic faiths. It originated in the early Persian Empire (present day Iran) well over 3000 years ago.
Zoroastrian rituals and prayers are solemnized in the presence of a Fire, which is scrupulously tended with sandalwood and frankincence and kept buning in a silver urn in the inner sanctum of every Zoroastrian fire-temple also called a Darbe Mehr (door of devotion). Fire is revered as a visual symbol of the Inner Light, the devine spark, that burns in each and every heart; a physical representation of the Illuminated Mind, Enlightenment and Truth. It is important to note that Zoroastirans do not worship fire as the religion denounces the worship of any idols or dieties. The mobed (priest) wears a mouth veil to prevent contamination of the fire.

The World Religions class observing this prayer are wearing hats and head coverings as a sign of respect to the sanctity of the place of worship. It is very special and rare for nonpractitioners to be allowed into the inner sanctum.
Parsi community protest against Mumbai metro route passing under two temples containing holy fire
Mumbai, Oct 14 (ANI): Thousands of Parsis protested against the route of Mumbai's new multi-billion-dollar metro and are asking the government to change the route so trains and commuters don't pass under fire temples where the Zoroastrians worship. Thousands of Parsis have signed an online petition saying that building tunnels under two temples, which contain holy fire, would desecrate their sanctity, forcing nature to exact its revenge. Their online petition at has received more than 7,000 signatures since being posted on Wednesday. The petition states that the fires are consecrated entities; living vibrant beings who are intermediaries between God and mankind.”
