Partagas Cigar Factory Tour #havana #cubancigars producing cigars for over 160 years
One of Havana’s oldest and most famous cigar factories, the landmark neoclassical Real Fábrica de Tabacos Partagás was founded in 1845 by a Spaniard named Jaime Partagás and was built in response to the increase in demand this industry experienced during the second half of the 19th century. The original construction, which includes a courtyard surrounded by an arcade, was expanded in the early 20th century with the construction of a second floor and a two-story annexed building. Its façade is simple and matches the image that was predominant at the time: strong solid presence, rectangular distribution with elongated openings and a continuous balcony with iron rails.
Specializing in full-bodied cigars, today some 400 workers toil for up to 12 hours a day in here rolling such famous cigars as Montecristos and Cohibas.
The Partagás factory has been producing fine cigars for more than 160 years and offers the most insightful cigar tour in Havana and the most popular and reliable factory to visit. Tour groups check out the ground floor first, where the leaves are unbundled and sorted, before proceeding to the upper floors to watch the tobacco get rolled, pressed, adorned with a band and boxed. An English-speaking guide is always available, and the cigar shop is one of the most popular in the city
Cohiba
Normally the most expensive brand on average, Cohiba cigars were allegedly rolled specially for Fidel Castro. They were also given to visiting heads of state. These days anyone can buy one, usually for around $60-70 per piece, and the tobacco is extra fermented.
Partagas
Not for the faint of heart, these strong cigars pack a real punch. Take it slow to enjoy the earthy, peppery flavors without getting sick.
Montecristo
This brand is the biggest-selling in the world, with both new smokers and old hands enjoying the medium tobacco taste blended with flavors such as cocoa, coffee and vanilla.
Romeo y Julieta
If you want to smoke your new cigar immediately, Romeo y Julieta are a good bet. They don’t need much aging to bring out the complex flavors.
Ramon Allones
One for the heads, this small brand is far from a household name. The company has been running since 1837, but it has always been a fairly small operation. There are three sizes available, all of which use full-bodied tobacco.
La Gloria
Hoyo de Monterrey
Strength: Medium
Jose Gener was growing tobacco before creating his brand ' Hoyo de Monterrey' in 1865.
In 1970 the Le Hoyo series was launched in response to demands for a richer tasting line of cigars. Indeed. Le Hoyo is known for its distinctive, rich, complex flavor and taste
The visit to Habanos factories La Corona and H.Upmann at the Habanos Cigar Festival 26 Feb 2015
Aficionados, journalists, experts and business people linked to the realm of tobacco agreed to say this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Most of them never believed there could be such a wonderful world concealed behind a Cuban cigar.
The H. Upmann factory, located on Belascoain Street on the corner of Peñalver, produces the Montecristo vitolas, one of the most sought-after habano brands in the world and a benchmark in terms of international taste. Its cigar rollers will be tasked this year with the making of the Montecristo 80 Aniversario commemorative vitola, selected to mark birth of this brand back in 1935.
For its part, La Corona, on 20 de Mayo Avenue on the corner of Línea del Ferrocarril, stands as the main house of the Romeo y Julieta, Hoyo de Monterrey and San Cristóbal de La Habana brands. From here they reach out to countless markets around the globe, including the Romeo y Julieta Gran Reserva, hand-rolled cigars that have been aged for five to eight years. In this factory, some 625 employees –a majority of them with vast experience in this trade- churn out over 30,000 cigars on a daily basis.
Quality controllers, hand rollers, labelers, ringers, readers, that is, men and women linked to habanos, answered pleasantly all the questions asked by guests, who eventually left fully pleased for having learned a little bit more about the world’s best tobacco.

*TIPS*
- You will be approached by people in the streets of Cuba especially in Havana to buy cigars on special only for that day. BE VERY CAREFUL, there is a lot of fake cigars being sold on the street. Using banana leaves from what we're told. Don’t buy singles, buy the ones in boxes and have all the seals.
- ALWAYS check your box of cigars before purchasing to see that all cigars are the same even the bottom rows. We were told some boxes look presentable from the top row but all fake at the bottom. Double check.
- Buy cigars from government stores since they have seals and are 100% authentic. They might be slightly pricier. Box ranges from $65 CUC to $100 CUC depending the brand.
- Buy the cigars straight from Vinales (Tobacco Farms). They are the same as branded cigars, without the brand label.
