[Turkmenistan] Ancient Ruins - Parthian Settlement of Nisa
[Turkmenistan] Front mud guard rampart - Parthian Settlement of Nisa
Nisa Turkmenistan
Nisa (also Parthaunisa) was an ancient city, located near modern-day Bagir village, 18 km southwest of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. Nisa is described by some as the first seat of central government of the Parthians. It is traditionally assumed to be founded by Arsaces I (reigned c. 250 BC–211 BC), and was reputedly the royal necropolis of the Parthian kings, although it has not been established that the fortress at Nisa was either a royal residence or a mausoleum.

[Turkmenistan] Architectural Complex of Akhmed Zamchi @ Ancient Merv
I stopped at the Mazar (Sepulchre) of Ahmed Zamchi architectural complex.
According to the historical sources and tales of old local inhabitants, the tomb in the middle of the three is that of Akhmed Zamchi or Pakhlivan (“Hero”) Akhmed, son of Muhammad. The easternmost of the three tombs is said to be that of Mizrab Shah of Khorezm, although there is no reliable information to this effect as yet. There is no information available as to the occupant of the third tomb. Investigations carried out by historians Akhmed Zamchi and Mizrab Shah were the main characters in the historical novel of Abu-Takhir Tartusi, Abu Muslimnama. The novel tells of the famous Abbasid propagandist, Emir Abu Muslim, with whose name so many events in the past fate of the city of Merv were associated. Readers are acquainted with the historical events at the time of the popular uprising in 747 of the Abbasids (749-50 – 1258) against the Umayyads (661-750). Medieval written sources provided detailed accounts of the uprising, which was led by Abu Muslim. He set up his military camp near Merv and men from sixty of the nearby villages came out to support him. Mention is made in accounts by visitors to Merv at the end of the 19th century of the venerated site linked with “Akhmed Tabanji”, i.e. Akhmet “Sapanchi”, which literally means ” siing-wielder”. The marble sphere – split in two and 30cms in diameter – which they are supposed to have seen next to the tomb was, according to legend, what Pakhlivan Akhmed was able to hurl with his sling over great distances.
