History[edit]

Indigenous culture and colonization[edit]
The original inhabitants of Pasadena and surrounding areas were members of the Native American Hahamog-na tribe, a branch of the Tongva Nation. They spoke the Tongva language (part of the Uto-Aztecan languages group) and had lived in the Los Angeles Basin for thousands of years.[21] Tongva dwellings lined the Arroyo Seco (Los Angeles County) in present day Pasadena and south to where it joins the Los Angeles River and along other natural waterways in the city.
The native people lived in thatched, dome-shape lodges. They lived on a diet of acorn meal, seeds and herbs, venison, and other small animals. They traded for ocean fish with the coastal Tongva. They made cooking vessels from steatite soapstone from Catalina Island. The oldest transportation route still in existence in Pasadena is the old Tongva foot trail, also known as the Gabrielino Trail, that follows the west side of the Rose Bowl and the Arroyo Seco past the Jet Propulsion Laboratory into the San Gabriel Mountains. The trail has been in continuous use for thousands of years. An arm of the trail is also still in use in what is now known as Salvia Canyon. When the Spanish occupied the Los Angeles Basin they built the San Gabriel Mission and renamed the local Tongva people Gabrielino Indians, after the name of the mission. Today, several bands of Tongva people live in the Los Angeles area.

Pasadena residents can take care of forms and permits as well as inquire about city services and payments. Photography of the building is popular. Many photographers and couples inquire about getting permits for photographing their wedding photos at the Pasadena City Hall as well as other places around the city of Pasadena that are rustic and old like places with brick backgrounds and old stone. The grounds has a courtyard in the middle with a picturesque fountain that's also great to photograph as well as flowers in the garden. Even the stairwells and hallways are fun to take pictures of.
Pasadena City Hall wedding photography info ( ): Permits are no longer required to take wedding party photos on premises. Check out the city link for more information.
When visiting city hall, check out the Jackie and Mack memorial statue across the street. They are located on the grass patch facing the building. There is a little informational where you can learn about the public art works. Another thing to consider when visiting Pasadena is parking. At the Pasadena city hall and surrounding areas, parking is normally an hour and now taken care of via pay stations located around the area. Make sure to place your parking ticket stub on the Driver's side dashboard and note the time. The parking enforcement in Pasadena is pro-active and always patrolling as seen in the video.

California Marketing, Pasadena CA - Midnight Bus Tour
Fred Jr shares a story about his company California Marketing in Pasadena CA
Pasadena City Hall.
Pasadena City Hall, completed in 1927, serves as the central location for city government in the City of Pasadena, California and it is a significant architectural example of the City Beautiful movement of the 1920s.
Pasadena City Hall is one of the finest examples of the California Mediterranean style. It is the dominant building in the Pasadena Civic Center, a complex of government, institutional and cultural buildings that epitomizes the City Beautiful movement.
Since its opening on December 27, 1927, 80-year old Pasadena City Hall has remained one of the most distinctive public buildings in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
An official building of imposing beauty, massive yet graceful, and suited to a land of flowers and sunshine is what the Pasadena Board of Directors (called the City Council in modern times) had in mind when they undertook to build the present City Hall.
The way had been prepared in 1923, when the people of Pasadena passed a bond issue of $3.5 million to establish a civic center. The Chicago firm of Bennett, Parsons and Frost was commissioned to draw up a civic center plan. The planners established Garfield Avenue as an axis, on which City Hall was to be the central element, with the Pasadena Public Library to the north and the Pasadena Civic Auditorium to the south. Also included in the original design were the Pasadena Police Department, Pasadena Municipal Court, YMCA, YWCA, Southern California Gas Company and United States Post Office. Over the years the new police building and county court house have been added. The YMCA building is now Centennial Place, a single-room-occupancy residential complex, and the Southern California Gas Company building now serves as the city's Permit Center. The YWCA building is unoccupied because of seismic and other issues.
Pasadena City Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 28, 1980, (listing number is 80-000813) as a contributor to the Pasadena Civic Center District; the listed significance is at the national level. As quoted from the National Register of Historic Places Inventory -- Nomination form: The district, a Civic Center designed by Bennett, Parsons and Frost, is a nationally significant example of civic art in the 'City Beautiful' style of the 1920's. The main features of the plan were actually executed, and the key buildings (including City Hall) actually built, by nationally recognized architects in a homogeneous style.
The City Hall has long been a favorite shooting location for filmmakers. The courtyard was used in the 1995 movie A Walk in the Clouds to portray a Napa Valley town square. It has also been used as an embassy in the Mission: Impossible television series, and a villa in Charlie Chaplin's Oscar-nominated 1940 film The Great Dictator. Pasadena City Hall currently serves as the city hall of fictional Pawnee, Indiana, in the television show Parks and Recreation. The dome is visible through the window of the main characters' apartment building in the television show The Big Bang Theory.
From a distance, Pasadena City Hall has always looked as though it has withstood the test of time. However, the building was showing signs of age by the late 20th century. The 1920s building did not meet modern building codes, and studies indicated that a major earthquake could destroy several parts of the building and likely result in a loss of life. The concrete walls had many deep cracks, and two of the stairway towers had considerable damage. There was also water damage from years of storms with little to no repair and maintenance. An effort to rehabilitate the aging building began in the late 1990s, led by Architectural Resources Group of San Francisco, CA.
In July 2004, the building was vacated in order to allow for a complete overhaul of the structure. Over the course of three years, all offices and council chambers were renovated, the facade was restored, the building was adapted to meet ADA standards, HVAC systems were replaced and modernized, and new landscaping and architectural lighting was installed. To help ensure it would withstand future earthquake activity, the building was lifted off its foundation, equipped with structural base isolators and given a new foundation. The renovation of Pasadena City Hall earned a LEED Gold certification.
Following construction, staff moved back starting in April 2007 and City Hall was fully operational again by July. At the time, the Los Angeles Times noted: In a city where historic preservation is much like a civic obsession, City Hall has long been among the crown jewels of Pasadena, along with the Colorado Street Bridge, the Rose Bowl and the Gamble House. Although the renovation has been among the costliest public works projects in Pasadena, city officials decided that they couldn't risk losing the landmark in another quake.

A Walk Around The Intersection of De Lacey & Colorado, Old Pasadena
Old Pasadena, often referred to as Old Town Pasadena or just Old Town, is the original commercial center of Pasadena, a city in California, United States that arose from one of the most prosperous areas of the state, and had a latter day revitalization after a period of decay.
Old Pasadena began as the center of an industrial hub that gave rise to Caltech, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Beckman Instruments, Aerojet and numerous other important companies.[citation needed] The large concentration of such companies in the area gave it the nickname Athens of the West.
The area was also an artistic center, the home to Andy Warhol's west coast debut, the Pasadena Museum of Modern Art (one of the earliest modern art museums in the country, now the Norton Simon Museum), and before that a center of suffragist and pacifist movements, and other liberal causes. By the late 1940s, the downtown area was blighted by flophouses, dive bars and pawn shops. It later became a hippie destination, with head shops, adult bookstores and massage parlors. By the late 1980s, Old Pasadena was undergoing a period of urban renewal and regeneration.

129th Rose Parade on New Year's Day 2018 in Pasadena, California, USA.
The Rose Parade, also known as the Tournament of Roses Parade, is part of America's New Year Celebration held in Pasadena, California each year on New Year's Day (or on Monday, January 2 if New Year's Day falls on a Sunday). The parade includes flower-covered floats, marching bands, and equestrian units and is followed by the Rose Bowl college football game. It is produced by the nonprofit Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association.
Originally started on January 1, 1890, the Rose Parade is watched in person by hundreds of thousands of spectators on the parade route, and is broadcast on multiple television networks in the United States. It is seen by millions more on television worldwide in more than 100 international territories and countries. The Rose Bowl is a college football game that was added in 1902 to help fund the cost of staging the parade.[3] Since 2011, the parade has been sponsored by Honda. Accordingly, the company has the parade's first float, which like all floats, follows the parade's theme.
