The Jain temple of Patan (Gujarat - India)
(EN) Patan was a capital of Gujarat in medieval times. It is the administrative seat of Patan District in the Indian state of Gujarat and administered by municipality. The city contains many Hindu and Jain temples as well as few mosques, dargahs and rojas. The city has many historical places also. Patan, an ancient fortified town, was founded in 745 AD by Vanraj Chavda, the most prominent king of the Chavda Kingdom. He named the city Anhilpur Patan or Anhilwad Patan after his close friend and Prime Minister Anhil shepherd. It is variously referred to in Sanskrit literature as Anahilpatak, Anahipattan, Anahilpur, Anahilvad Pattan, Pattan etc.
These Chalukya rajputs, with Paramaras of Malwa, the Chauhans of Sakambhari and Chandellas of Kalanjar and Mahoba, were serious contestants for supremacy in northern India. At the zenith of their imperial greatness the bounds of Gujarat were extended to cover Saurashtra and Kutch in the West, Lata in the South, Malwa in the East and Southern Rajasthan in the North. Historian Tertius Chandler estimates that Anhilwara was the tenth-largest city in the world in the year 1000, with a population of approximately 100,000.
When Muizzuddin Muhammad Ghori had attempted to conquer Gujarat, the forces of Mularaja-II, the then King of Patan, a mere boy-ruler, led by his heroic mother Naikidevi, inflicted such a crushing and conclusive defeat on him that the foreigner did not dare again during his life time to cast his greedy eye upon Patan. He never again entered India through Gujarat. The battle was fought at Kayadra, a village near Mount Abu. Muizzuddin's army was completely routed in the conflict, but Somehow he escaped with his defeated army from Gujarat.
Muhammed's general (and later Sultan of Delhi) Qutb-ud-din Aybak sacked the city between 1200 and 1210, and it was destroyed by the Alladin Khilji in 1298.
The modern town of Patan later sprung up near the ruins of Anhilwara. During 1304 to 1411, First Patan Was the Gujarat State or Suba Headquarter of Delhi Sultanate and then Capital City of Gujarat Sultanate after the collapse of the Delhi Sultanate at the end of the fourteenth century. A new Fort was built by these Subas, a large portion of which along with a Few of the Gates is still intact. The old Fort of Hindu Kingdom is nearly vanquished and only a wall can be seen on the way from Kalka to Ranaki ni Vaav. In 1411, Sultan Ahmed Shah moved the capital to Ahmedabad.
Patan was part of the Maratha state of Baroda from the mid-eighteenth century until India's independence in 1947, when Baroda became part of Bombay state, which in 1960 was separated into Gujarat and Maharashtra.

7 Wonders of India: Junagadh Fort
The Junagarh Fort is situated in Gujarat. It has rock edicts, set up by Ashoka, the Great Indian emperor, dating back 2200 years. The fort is girdled by a wall, which is over 20 m and is virtually inaccessible. The fort is around 1200 years old and was built by king Ugrasen. The fort bore witness to the 12-year long war between Sidharaj Jaisingh, the king of Gujarat, and Rakhengar, the king of Junagadh, over queen Ranakdevi. It is visited all year round by a large number of tourists.

India: Sangareddy District Jail - The prison people pay to get in
The colonial-era District Central Jail in Sangareddy, in the Indian state of Telangana, opened its doors to tourists, who can now gain a first-hand experience of prison life by paying a fee of 500 rupees ($7.50 / €6,70) for a day's stay.
Footage from the jail in Sangareddy on Wednesday, shows paying visitors languish their 24-hour sentence away in the guest prison. A 24-hour confinement is offered to visiting 'prisoners' under the initiative dubbed 'Feel the Jail' at the 220-year-old jail, which has been converted into a museum.
Upon entering the prison compound, the inmates are provided with a prison uniform, a steel meal plate, a mug, bedding and other basic necessities. During their 24-hour confinement, the guest 'prisoners' are allowed to plant saplings and clean their barracks.
SOT, Santosh Kumar Roy, Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (English): In this villager concept, an individual has been allowed to stay in the jail for a 24-hour time. He has to pay five hundred rupees Again, he will be staying like a jail inmate. He has to wear the jail inmate dress, he has to follow the routines, day-to-day routines, their lock-up time, unlock-up time. Again, you'll be cut from your Facebook and WhatsApp, so you are entirely cut from the society and world.

सोमनाथ मंदिर की कहानी | Story of Somnath Temple
The temple of Somnath (Gujarat - India)
Caution: no video nor photos are allowed inside the temple
The Somnath Temple located in the Prabhas Kshetra near Veraval in Saurashtra, on the western coast of Gujarat, India, is the most sacred of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of the God Shiva. Somnath means The Protector of (the) Moon God. The Somnath Temple is known as the Shrine Eternal, having been destroyed six times and rebuilt six times. Most recently it was rebuilt in November 1947, when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel visited the area for the integration of Junagadh and mooted a plan for restoration. After Patel's death, the rebuilding continued under K. M. Munshi, another minister of the Government of India.

Om Namoh Shiva at Somnath temple*Prabhas Patan*Gujarat
The Somnath temple located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat, is believed to be the first among the twelve jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva.[1] It is an important pilgrimage and tourist spot of Gujarat. Destroyed and reconstructed several times in the past, the present temple was reconstructed in Chaulukya style of Hindu temple architecture and completed in May 1951. The reconstruction was envisioned by Vallabhbhai Patel and was completed under K. M. Munshi, the then head of the temple trust.
The temple is considered sacred due to the various legends connected to it. Somnath means Lord of the Soma, an epithet of Shiva.
The Somnath temple is known as the Shrine Eternal, following a book of K. M. Munshi by this title and his narration of the temple's destruction and reconstruction many times in history.
The site of Somnath has been a pilgrimage site from ancient times on account of being a Triveni sangam (the confluence of three rivers — Kapila, Hiran and the mythical Sarasvati). Soma, the Moon god, is believed to have lost his lustre due to a curse, and he bathed in the Sarasvati River at this site to regain it. The result is the waxing and waning of the moon, no doubt an allusion to the waxing and waning of the tides at this sea shore location. The name of the town Prabhas, meaning lustre, as well as the alternative names Someshvar and Somnath (The lord of the moon or the moon god) arise from this tradition.
Before independence, Prabhas Patan was part of the princely state of Junagadh, whose ruler had acceded to Pakistan in 1947. After India refused to accept his decision, the state was made a part of India and Deputy Prime Minister Patel came to Junagadh on 12 November 1947 to direct the stabilization of the state by the Indian Army and at the same time ordered the reconstruction of the Somnath temple.[46]
When Patel, K. M. Munshi and other leaders of the Congress went to Mahatma Gandhi with their proposal to reconstruct the Somnath temple, Gandhi blessed the move, but suggested that the funds for the construction should be collected from the public and the temple should not be funded by the state. He expressed that he was proud to associate himself to the project of renovation of the temple.[47] However, soon both Gandhi and Sardar Patel died and the task of reconstruction of the temple continued under Munshi, who was the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Government of India headed by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.[47]
The ruins were pulled down in October 1950 and the mosque present at that site was shifted few kilometres away.[48] In May 1951, Rajendra Prasad, the first President of the Republic of India, invited by K M Munshi, performed the installation ceremony for the temple.[49] The President said in his address, It is my view that the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple will be complete on that day when not only a magnificent edifice will arise on this foundation, but the mansion of India's prosperity will be really that prosperity of which the ancient temple of Somnath was a symbol..[50] He added The Somnath temple signifies that the power of reconstruction is always greater than the power of destruction.
The temple is situated at such a place that there is no land in a straight line between Somnath seashore until Antarctica, such an inscription in Sanskrit is found on the Bāṇastambha (Sanskrit: बाणस्तम्भ, lit. arrow pillar) erected on the sea-protection wall. The Bāṇastambha mentions that it stands at a point on the Indian landmass that is the first point on land in the north to the South Pole at that particular longitude.

INDIA : JAIL : OCCUPATIONAL REHABILITATION PROGRAMMES FOR INMATES
English/Nat
A jail sentence in India usually means years of boredom in overcrowded jails and the re- offending rates are high for an underclass that knows nothing but crime.
But one jail in central India is attempting Western-style rehabilitation for its inmates with thriving industries springing up inside the prison walls.
Behind the gates of the Yerwada jail lies a hive of activity.
Not for these inmates long tedious hours passed in overcrowded jails with nothing to do and nothing to look forward to.
This prison is trying out Western-style rehabilitation by putting the inmates to work, but not at hard labour.
Instead they are learning skills and trades that may help them get a proper job when they get out of jail instead of returning to crime to make money.
Hundreds of chairs are made in this workshop which is just one of many flourishing industries that have sprung up inside the walls of the Yerwada jail.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We are teaching them a number of skills. We are of the view that when they leave this prison they should equip themselves with one of the skills like carpentry, smithy work, weaving, painting etc. And it is our contention that the prisoners when they pass out from this prison they should take some occupation so that they do not commit crimes to earn their livelihood.
SUPER CAPTION: M.G. Narvane, Inspector General Prisons
For some of the inmates, it's the closest they have ever come to having a regular job.
The prison authorities hope that as well as teaching them skills for a new life, the work habits instilled in them will also serve them well when they are released.
The workshops are highly organised with quotas set with orders to be filled .
Prisoners can see for themselves if they are reaching the targets set.
This means they are involved in more than just the basic production - here everyone can see if the workshop is running behind.
For their hard work, they get paid a small wage of three rupees per hour.
Although its not much, it does mean when they have finished their jail terms, they will have a small amount of savings available to them.
The authorities hope that this will also help prevent them returning to criminal activities as soon as they leave.
But all the skills used are not only those learnt on the inside.
For those who already have an artistic bent, the jail encourages them to use their time to develop those natural talents.
An Italian prisoner Matwala, who is serving a sentence for drug-trafficking, has found an opportunity to nurture his talent for playing the Tabla.
He is a big fan of the jail's progressive attitude.
SOUNDBITE:
I appreciate what they are doing . It is a good thing that at last even being in prison they are allowing whosoever is having qualities to be used.
SUPER CAPTION: Matwala, Prisoner
The reformation work being carried out at this jail has been widely praised and it is hoped that other jails will also see the benefits of showing inmates an alternative to crime.
