Patan Durbar Square is situated at the centre of the city of Lalitpur in Nepal. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of its attraction is the ancient royal palace where the Malla Kings of Lalitpur resided.
The Durbar Square is a marvel of Newar architecture. The square floor is tiled with red bricks. There are many temples and idols in the area. The main temples are aligned opposite of the western face of the palace. The entrance of the temples faces east, towards the palace. There is also a bell situated in the alignment beside the main temples. The Square also holds old Newari residential houses. There are other temples and structures in and around Patan Durbar Square built by the Newa People.
The square was heavily damaged by the earthquake in April 2015.
Patan, the oldest of all the three cities of Kathmandu valley. It is the best known for its artistic heritage. It is probably one of the oldest Buddhist City in the world. The city is situated on a plateau across Bagmati River. Another name of Patan, is Lalitpur. The city is surrounded by 4Stupas as 4 corners of Patan, one at each corner of its cardinal points. These stupas are said to have been built by the famous Emperor Ashoka. This is one of the most elegant architectural treasures of which Patan is very proud. About the beauty of Patan, a western lady writer has to say this - Patan means eternity itself and Patan Durbar Square is the spectacular sight of Asia indeed. Really it is full of Hindu temples and Buddhist monuments with bronze gateways, guardian deities and wonderful carvings and many visitors come here to see the these monuments. Patan Durbar square is the famous visiting place. The square is full of ancient places, temples, and shrines noted for their exquisite carvings.
The former royal palace complex is the center of Patan's religious and social life and houses a museum containing an array of bronze statues and religious objects. There are three main courtyards or chowks, so named central Mul Chowk, Sundari Chowk and Keshav Narayan Chowk in the square. The Sundari Chowk holds in its center a masterpiece of stone architecture, the Royal bath called Tushahity.

Hiranya Varna Mahavihar
Located inside kwabadehul, this three- story golden pagoda of Lokeshwar (lord Buddha) was built in the twelfth century by king Bhaskar Verma. It is famous as the golden temple. Inside the upper story of the pagoda, are the golden images of lord Buddha and a large prayer wheel.
Golden Window
This was specially built for King Siddhi Narasingha malla. His devotion to Lord Krishna as well as the Buddhist God of compassion Karunamaya Lokeshwar is a famous episode in Nepalese history of religion.
Mahabouddha Temple
This temple of Buddha built interestingly in the Hindu Shikara style- has five golden pinnacles. They are all in a stupa shape very symbolic of five basic elements.

This golden temple of Buddha in Patan is the oldest richest and most famous monument indeed. It was built 12th century is known for its beautiful gold works shining very graciously.
Krishna Temple
The Famous Temple Which was built in the 17th century, the temple of Lord Krishna holds a commanding position in the palace complex of Patan. It is the only temple in Nepal to have 21 shrines and is completely made of stone. Most of the important scenes from the ancient Hindu epics the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, have been engraved on its friezes.

Krishna Mandir:
Krishna temple is the most important temple in Patan Durbar Square.[8] It is built in the Shikhara style imported from India although it is unique in its own way. The stone carvings along the beam above the first and second floor pillar is most notable. The first floor pillar carvings narrate the events of the Mahabharata, while on the second floor there are visual carvings from Ramayana.[8][9]
The temple was built in 1637 by King Siddhinarasimh Malla. It is said that one night the King saw the Lord Krishna and his consort Srimati Radha standing in front of the royal palace. He ordered a temple to be built on the same spot.[10] There are 21 golden pinnacles in the temple. Below the pinnacles are 3 stories. The first floor holds the main shrine of Lord Krishna with shrines of Radha and Rukmini at each side. The second floor is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the third to Lokeshwor(Lord Buddha).[1][10]
The square is crowded with thousands of Hindu Pilgrims and devotees during Krishnastami.[11]

The history of the Durbar Square is not clear. Although the Malla Kings of Lalitpur are given credit for establishing the royal square, it is known that the site is an ancient crossroad. The Pradhanas who settled around the site before the Mallas have connections with the Durbar Square.[1] Some chronicles hint that the history of patan Thakuri Dynasty built a palace and made reforms to the locality but the evidence is minute. Scholars are certain that Patan was a prosperous city since ancient times.[6]
The Malla Kings did make important changes to the square. Most of the current architecture is from the 1600s, constructed during the reign of King Siddhinarasimha Malla and his son Srinivasa sukriti. Some of the notable Mallas Kings who improved the square include Purandarasimha, Sivasimha Malla and Yoganarendra Malla.[1][6]

Patan Durbar Square in Lalitpur in Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. One can see the 17th century Royal Palace which is now a Museum at Patan Durbar Square. The wooden windows and sculptures engraved can be seen at the Palace.
Forming the whole eastern side of Durbar Square, the Royal Palace of Patan was originally built in the 14th century but was expanded massively during the 17th and 18th centuries by Siddhinarsingh Malla, Srinivasa Malla and Vishnu Malla. The Patan palace predates the palaces in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur and remains one of the architectural highlights of Nepal. Despite some damage during the earthquake, the palace and museum have been stabilized and restoration works are underway.
Behind the extravagant facade, with its overhanging eaves, carved windows and delicate wooden screens, are a series of connecting courtyards and a trip of temples dedicated to the valley’s main deity, the goddess Taleju. The closed external Bhairab gateway leading to the central Mul Chowk courtyard is flanked by two stone lions and colourful murals of Shiva in his wrathful incarnation as Bhairab. Strings of buffalo guts are hung above the door in his honour.

काठमाडौं उपत्यकाका प्रसिद्ध तीन शहरहरूमध्ये पाटन सबैभन्दा पुरानो शहर मानिन्छ। प्राचीनकालमा यसलाई युपग्राम, यल, मनिङ्ल, ललितपत्तन, ललितापुरी आदि नामले पुकारिन्थ्यो । पाटन शहर बरदेवले स्थापना गराएका हुन् । प्राचीन पाटनको बीचमा रहेको पाटन दरबार क्षेत्र एक प्राचीन स्मारकको धरोहरका रूपमा छ । सत्रौँ शताब्दी देखिका कला र सांस्कृतिक सम्पदाले यो क्षेत्र सिँगारिएको छ । यो दरबार क्षेत्र केवल राजपरिवारको बासस्थानका रूपमा मात्र नरहेर तिनताकाको प्रशासनको मूलकेन्द्र पनि थियो । पाटन दरबारको जग यसैले हालेको भनी हालसम्म कसैले पनि ठोकुवा गर्न सकेको पाइँदैन। तथापि सन् १०२४-१०४० सम्मको अवधिमा लक्ष्मीकामदेवले गरेको भन्ने किंवदन्ती भने भेटिन्छ। वि. सं. १६७५ तिर पाटनका स्वतन्त्र राजा भएका सिद्धिनरसिंह मल्लले तत्कालीन मनिङ्गल राजप्रासादलाई विस्तार गर्नुका साथै कलाकृतिले सिँगारेका कुरा इतिहासले देखाउँछन्। उनले नै आफ्ना इष्टदेवता तलेजु भवानी (तुलजा भवानी)को सानो मन्दिर पनि त्यहाँ बनाए। साथै देगुतले मन्दिरको पनि निर्माण गराए।
पाटन दरबारको महत्त्वपूर्ण अङ्ग सुन्दरीचोक पनि एक हो। यहाँ नेवारी वास्तुकलाका अनुपम उदाहरणहरू देख्न सकिन्छ। यसको निर्माण पनि सिद्धिनरसिंह मल्लले नै गराएका थिए। सुन्दरीचोक नजीकैको तुसाहिटी धारा ज्यादै आकर्षक छ। सन् १६९३मा मुख्य दरबारको पश्चिमपट्ट निर्माण गरिएको शिखरशैलीको २१ गजुर भएको विशुद्व प्रस्तरजडित कृष्णमन्दिर यस क्षेत्रको आकर्षणको केन्द्रबिन्दुका रूपमा छ। कृष्णमन्दिरकै छेउमा रहेको नेपाली वास्तुकलाको उत्कृष्ट नमुनाका रूपमा रहेको भीमसेनको मन्दिर श्रीनिवास मल्लले बनाएका हुन्। यसै क्षेत्रमा रहेको प्रसिद्ध मणिमण्डपको निर्माण वि. सं. १७५८मा योगनरेन्द्र मल्लले गराएका थिए। यी राजालाई आजसम्म पनि जीवित राजाका रूपमा मानिन्छ। दरबारको उपल्लो तलाको पश्चिमपट्टीको एक कोठाको झ्याल खुला राखी उनका लागि एउटा शयनकक्ष अद्यापि तयार नै राखिएको छ। दरबार अगाडि रहेको आफ्नो शालिकको टाउकोमा एउटा चरा पनि छ। उनले आफू मर्ने बेलामा त्यो मानवनिर्मित चरा उडेर नगएसम्म आफूलाई ज्युँदै छ भन्ठान्नू भनेका थिए भन्ने भनाइ छ।
