Walking with Jacobites - Part 1: Widdrington

22nd February 2018

This is the first of a series of history walks I've been meaning to do for a while now. Each walk has one common feature... The Northumbrian Jacobites.

But, each walk is not specific about the 1715 uprising. Instead, they will include other bits of history and hopefully some nice scenery.

I am not a historian, so while I try to keep things accurate from my research, I am no expert and will make mistakes. Ultimately the emphasis on this series is on the 'Walking' part and the history is just something to add value to the walks. Consider the video as a journey of discovery rather than a statement of fact and I am happy if you come along with me as I explore our landscape and its history.

So part 1 is dedicated to Lord Widdrington who once lived in Stella Hall near Blaydon. The walk begins with a trip up Blaydon burn and then swings back round to Stella and then I head home via Newburn bridge and the willows at Ryton. From the church, I just followed the road home to Prudhoe because all this talking lark made me late for my daughter's karate class.

McDougall's Flour Mill - Horsebridge

Joseph Arthur Rank (28 March 1854 - 13 November 1943) was the founder of Rank Hovis McDougall, later RHM, one of the United Kingdom's largest food production and flour-milling businesses until it was acquired by Premier Foods in 2007.
Born in Hull and educated at the Reverend Haynes's School in Swinefleet near Goole, Joseph Rank initially joined the family milling business.
In 1875 he established his own business when he rented a small windmill. Then in 1885 he installed a mechanically-driven flour mill at the Alexandra Mill in Hull. His approach was to establish mills close to ports around the United Kingdom so expanding the business until it was the largest flour-milling business in the Country.
During the 1880s he became a staunch Methodist. He was also a lifelong cricket fan. He established various charities which have now been consolidated into the Joseph Rank Trust, and also supported the Hull Royal Infirmary. During World War I he served on the Wheat Control Board. Sadly he saw the mills that he had built bombed to destruction during World War II.
The Company was founded by Joseph Rank in 1875 as flour milling business when he rented a small windmill. He initially lost money and therefore took a co-tenancy at West's Holderness Corn Mill. In 1885 he built a mechanically-driven flour mill in Hull in order to beat competition from abroad. He used steel rollers instead of mill stones thereby producing six sacks of flour an hour instead of one and a half. In 1888 he built another steel-roller plant in Lincolnshire, and soon after, built a more modern plant, producing 20 sacks of flour an hour.
As he strove for greater productivity he installed equipment that produced 30 sacks of flour an hour, and then 40 sacks an hour. He also set up agencies to distribute his flour in parts of England where it previously had not been sold. In May 1899 the business was incorporated as a private company under the name Joseph Rank Limited.
In 1902 Joseph Rank made his first trip to the United States to understand and beat his American competitors. Soon after his trip abroad, the company built mills in London and Cardiff. In 1912, a mill in Birkenhead was built to supply the needs of Ireland and northwestern England. Rank then moved the corporate headquarters of the Company from Yorkshire to London.
During World War II the company employed 3,000 workers, many of them women working while their husbands were away at war. In 1935 Joseph Rank was awarded the Freedom of the City of Hull, in part because of a trust fund he had set up in Hull to help poor persons of good character.
During the 1920s, Rank expanded into Scotland and Ireland. He also formed the British Isles Transport Company Limited to facilitate transport of his products around the country. The Company was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1933. In 1943 James Rank became Chairman following his father's death who died at his home in Reigate Heath, Surrey in 1943.
In 1945 James Rank, the new chairman, assisted by Cecil Loombe, who had become a director, set about rebuilding mills destroyed by bombing, which included the new Baltic Flour Mill at Gateshead, opened in 1950.
In 1952, James Rank was succeeded by his brother J. Arthur Rank as Chairman. Arthur explored ways of improving quality control in food production founding RHM Technology and its research centre at High Wycombe. In March 2007 RHM was acquired by Premier Foods for £1.2bn. The Falkirk Wheel (boat lift)

The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift in the world. An amazing piece of engineering which links the Union Canal with the Forth and Clyde Canal.
Historically, the two canals had been joined at Falkirk by a flight of 11 locks that stepped down across a distance of 1.5km, but these had been dismantled in 1933, breaking the link.

The boat here is lifted from the canal basin beside the Forth and Clyde canal up to the aqueduct, before going through the 160m/1095ft Rough Castle tunnel to the Union Canal.

The Falkirk Wheel was opened by the Queen in May 2002, and is now one of Scotlands most popular tourist attractions.

The wheel has an overall diameter of 35 metres (115 ft) and consists of two opposing arms which extend 15 metres beyond the central axle and take the shape of a Celtic-inspired, double-headed axe. Two sets of these axe-shaped arms are attached about 25 metres (82 ft) apart to a 3.5 metres (11 ft) diameter axle. Two diametrically opposed water-filled caissons, each with a capacity of 80,000 gallons, are fitted between the ends of the arms.
These caissons (also known as gondolas) always weigh the same whether or not they are carrying their combined capacity of 600 tonnes of floating canal barges as, according to Archimedes' principle, floating objects displace their own weight in water, so when the boat enters, the amount of water leaving the caisson weighs exactly the same as the boat. This keeps the wheel balanced and so, despite its enormous mass, it rotates through 180° in five and a half minutes while using very little power. It takes just 22.5 kilowatts (30.2 hp) to power the electric motors, which consume just 1.5 kilowatt-hours (5.4 MJ) of energy in four minutes, roughly the same as boiling eight kettles of water.

The Zone / Wardley Colliery. Gateshead exploring.

Once a colliery, then a paintball site, these buildings have alot of history. Formally known as wardly colliery however, now takes the name 'the zone'. Situated closest to pelaw metro station. Hiding deep amongst the dense woodland lies these decaying buildings. Forgotten, vandalised, derelict.

Sounds like a great place to explore? That's if we don't get caught.

About 5 minutes from pelaw metro station. Head towards the direction to heworth but, turn left. Down a mud Road and turn right before the big gate. you head towards the old train lines and carry on the path. It's easy to find.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge tilting

This is a video of Gateshead Millennium Bridge tilting in real time at noon on Sunday 18 April 2010.

Most videos of this are speeded up using time lapse and I haven't been able to find a high definition video of the tilt in real time. So here's one. It does show the beautiful geometric patterns created as the bridge goes up and down.

There is an added diversion in the background where you can see a charity abseil down the front of the Malmaison Hotel on the Newcastle side of the Tyne.

Heatherwick's Rolling Bridge

The Rolling Bridge was designed by the award-winning Heatherwick Studio, working with structural engineers SKM Anthony Hunts.

Installed in August 2004, the Rolling Bridge spans an inlet of the Grand Union Canal, towards the head of Paddington Basin.

The Rolling Bridge at first appears inconspicuous; a simple steel and timber footbridge. To allow access for a boat to be moored in its inlet however, it slowly curls up until its two ends meet, forming an octagonal sculpture that stands on one side of the canal towpath.

The twelve metre bridge is made from eight triangular segments, which fold towards each other. The master unit hidden underground powers hydraulic rams within the bridge parapets, which fold the handrail. This is what enables the bridge to curl.

The Rolling Bridge was constructed at Littlehampton Welding in Sussex, and arrived at Paddington by canal. Since its official opening in September 2004 it has won a Structural Steel Award and an Emerging Architecture Award.

Every Wednesday and Friday at midday, and on Saturdays at 2pm, the team at Merchant Square delight visitors and people who live and work in Paddington by demonstrating the Rolling Bridge in action.

Falkirk to Edinburgh Canal Boating (20x timelapse)

Timelapse video of our entire canal boat trip from Falkirk to Edinburgh and back, including rides on the Falkirk Wheel. Sorry about the butt-shots...I occasionally forgot about the GoPro and stood in front of it.

Highlights:
00:01:09 - Up the wheel.
00:03:45 - Up the locks.
00:06:29 - Through a tunnel (bonus kayakers after the tunnel).
00:09:08 - Stopping for groceries.
00:12:57 - First night parking (bonus feeding ducks/geese).
00:13:56 - Aqueduct.
00:15:57 - Bridge with more kayakers.
00:16:36 - Tying up in Linlithgow to get water and feed the ducks (also a great place to get a beer).
00:18:01 - If you get out early on your first day and are willing to go into dusk, you can probably make it to this mooring in Linlithgow for the night. But it's a trudge, which is probably why that first night parking cove exists.
00:19:55 - Canal bistro (The Park Bistro We didn't stop. It's on the left.
00:21:25 - Passing another boat coming the opposite direction. Because people have asked. There's plenty of room in most parts.
00:23:44 - Surreal trees, a bridge, clouds mirrored in the canal.
00:24:55 - An example of mooring to the bank in an unofficial spot, using the plank and stakes (Winchburgh--also a good place for a beer, but everyone at the bar will noticeably notice that y'aint from 'round here...or however the Scottish spell that).
00:28:16 - Passing a canal dredger (mildly interesting, if you're into that).
00:29:39 - Aqueduct and overnight mooring point.
00:31:41 - Creepy Santa's Castle on an Island. We were horrified and intrigued enough to actually stop, back up and circle around the island.
00:32:37 - I jump out and walk along the towpath. It's such an amazing resource. You can easily hop off, walk, and hop back on at any bridge where the canal necks down.
00:33:43 - I hop back on and then we have to wait for the old people's tea boat to turn around.
00:37:52 - Aqueduct over a freeway. Juxtaposition. (see for another view of the crossing).
00:39:14 - Starting to get urban as we head into Edinburgh.
00:45:11 - Ending in Edinburgh, with lift-bridge. You call ahead to get them to lift it for you.
00:45:49 - Turning around in Edinburgh (after a day or so of beers, notice we bounce a bit as we turn around) to head home.
00:46:20 - Stopping for water and waiting for the lift-bridge to leave Edinburgh.
00:50:01 - Oops! This is what happens when there's not enough room for boats to pass. We needed to back up and wait. What you can't tell from this silent timelapse is that, according with British Waterways rules (srsly, read the handbook before you go, it's simple stuff), we sound the horn at each bridge. Oncoming boats do the same, which is why we knew they were there.
01:00:41 - Stopping in Port Buchan, Broxburn to get attacked by swans while we try to get water (the boat hire will probably warn you not to stop here overnight because impish vandals will throw rocks at your boat).
01:10:14 - Getting water in Linlithgow (yeah, we bumped into that guy's boat. Oops).
01:10:59 - Don obsessively rocking as we refill our water in Linlithgow.
01:16:03 - WTF? Is that a boat sideways across the canal? A couple got stoned out of their gourds and got their boat stuck across the canal. I hopped out and un-stuck it for them. The woman tried to keep going and got a short ways but, in her shouted words, she cannae doo it, so I mooored them on the bank and we continued past them without further ado. For all I know, they might still be there.
01:22:41 - Back through the tunnel.
01:24:20 - Waiting for a boat to pass on our way down. The wind blew us into the bank and it took some effort to get going again.
01:25:53 - Down the locks.
01:28:16 - Down the wheel.

Restoration (2003) - Rescuing Heritage buildings in Britain. Dir. Simon Mansfield

Episode Four of the UK television series dedicated to the preservation of rare and unusual buildings around the UK. This episode's candidates, all in the northeast of England, were Ravensworth Castle near Gateshead, Harperley WW2 prison camp near Durham and Wentworth Woodhouse Conservatory with Stainborough Castle folly near Barnsley.

Other famous locations covered were Hadrian's Wall, Berwick-on-Tweed, Gormley's Angel of the North statue, Alnwick Castle and Dean Clough Mills, Halifax, with a brief nod to the Episode Three contenders, Banchory Sanatorium near Aberdeen, Kinloch Castle on Rhum, and Burra Croft on Shetland. Griff Rhys Jones presented the series. In this episode, contributions were made by the journalist Kate Adie, historian Michael Wood and gardener Rachel de Thame. This was an Endemol Production for the BBC, therefore not my work and only uploaded for your private edification and enjoyment. I rescued the programme from a remarkably well-preserved old VHS cassette.

The sad postscript to this programme is that many of the buildings featured have yet to be secured. Following massive investments, the Wentworth Estate and (in 2013) its conservatory were eventually rescued but failed to operate profitably, resulting in its closure in 2017. Harperley Camp remains largely unrestored but for a very recent effort to restore the theatre building. Despite an ambitious revival project, Ravensworth remains in a ruinous state and on the English Heritage At Risk Register. Banchory Sanatorium was destroyed by fire in 2016.

It has been the smaller and simpler buildings that have fared better; Burra Croft now operates as a small island museum. Kinloch Castle on the isolated Scottish Isle of Rhum was once criticised for its dull external design, yet it may well have been its simplicity that largely preserved its lavish interiors. It continues as a tourist attraction but currently requires significant investment following ownership transfer from Scottish National Heritage to a local Community Trust.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.

Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

Newcastle upon Tyne (locally (listen)), commonly known as Newcastle, is a city in Tyne and Wear, North East England, 103 miles (166 km) south of Edinburgh and 277 miles (446 km) north of London on the northern bank of the River Tyne, 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. Newcastle is the most populous city in the North East, and forms the core of the Tyneside conurbation, the eighth most populous urban area in the United Kingdom. Newcastle is a member of the English Core Cities Group and is a member of the Eurocities network of European cities.Newcastle was part of the county of Northumberland until 1400, when it became a county of itself, a status it retained until becoming part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. The regional nickname and dialect for people from Newcastle and the surrounding area is Geordie. Newcastle also houses Newcastle University, a member of the Russell Group, as well as Northumbria University.
The city developed around the Roman settlement Pons Aelius and was named after the castle built in 1080 by Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade in the 14th century, and later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the River Tyne, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres.
Newcastle's economy includes corporate headquarters, learning, digital technology, retail, tourism and cultural centres, from which the city contributes £13 billion towards the United Kingdom's GVA. Among its icons are Newcastle United football club and the Tyne Bridge. Since 1981 the city has hosted the Great North Run, a half marathon which attracts over 57,000 runners each year.

Frenchay Hospital – Bristol - Urban Exploration - Urbex

Frenchay Hospital is a large hospital situated in Frenchay, South Gloucestershire, on the north east outskirts of Bristol, England. It is part of theNorth Bristol NHS Trust.

From April to December 2014 Frenchay Hospital is being progressively closed, with the majority of services moving to a new building at Southmead Hospital. Accident and Emergency was transferred on 19 May 2014. A few services relating to brain and head injuries will remain at the site after December 2014.
