Uxbridge High School - Educator of The Year Award 2019 - Michael Smutok
This year, Uxbridge High School has become, whether we wanted to or not, a center of attention from many schools looking to replicate what we accomplish on a daily basis. From our schedule, to our teachers’ constant collaboration, to our work in designing effective pathways for students, we have had multiple opportunities to model opportunities that we truly believe are at the core of what we think are best for students. And every single time we have needed someone to present a class, provide students to meet, or to share what is happening in his environment, we have been able to, without question, turn to Mr. Smutok.
A few months ago, we were visited by a Project Lead the Way national mentor teacher. He came in from Missouri, and was here in Massachusetts working with teachers for a couple of weeks. After his day or so at UHS, this gentleman stopped in to say hello before he left, and he shared with me, “boy, you guys have a rock star up there. He may be one of the best I work with for this course in the entire country.” All year, everything that we have asked, whether it is a new piece of technology or equipment, or a new course, or a new idea, Mike Smutok steps up, does what is asked, and then some. We have representation on state boards, other superintendents asking for our curricula, and educators across the Commonwealth modeling programs after our courses. Most importantly, students in his classes are leaving with skills that have them prepared for college, work, industry - including state champions in engineering competition, students earning credit at colleges, and, most importantly, students who have told me that his class is a reason why they come to school every day. And finally, though I like to think I know quite a bit about most academic subjects, he does in a world that I could not possibly be an instructor. He is consistently committed to adapting his craft and for his students, and he meets every challenge that our administration has put in front of him with a smile, a shrug, and, “sure, we can do that” or “let’s give it a shot,” even if he may have some skepticism behind his confidence.
In that spirit, it is our pleasure to present the Educator of the Year award to Mr. Michael Smutok.
