Patriarchat w Peci. Patriarchate of Peć (monastery)
The Patriarchate of Peć or Monastery of the Patriarchate of Peć is a medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery located near the city of Peć, in Kosovo. The church is unique for Serbian churches, with three churches connected as one whole,[ with a total of four churches. Built in the 13th and 14th centuries, it is the spiritual seat and mausoleum of the Serbian archbishops and Serbian Patriarchs. It is situated by the Peć Bistrica, at the entrance of the Rugova Canyon. It is part of the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo, a combined World Heritage Site along with three other Orthodox monuments.
The monastery is ecclessiastically administrated by the Eparchy of Raška and Prizren, but it has special (stavropegial) status, since it is under direct jurisdiction of the Serbian Patriarch whose title includes Archbishop of Peć.

KOSOVO: PEC: SITUATION TENSE FOR SERBS
English/Nat
K-FOR forces and the leader of the Serb orthodox patriarch are urging Serb civilians in Pec not to leave as Kosovo Liberation Army fighters return to their headquarters in the western Kosovan town.
But fearful of reprisals from the K-L-A and ethnic Albanians, Serbs continue to head north into Serbia.
Left behind are burning Albanian homes and evidence of atrocities committed against Kosovo Albanians during the NATO bombardment.
The Serbs who have decided to leave Pec as ethnic Albanians and K-L-A fighter begin to return to the town are doing so out of fear that they will be the targets of revenge attacks.
In their wake lies devastation and ruin.
Houses belonging to ethnic Albanian families have been plundered and torched.
They may get their town back, some Serbs say, but they will have to rebuild their homes.
Retreating Serb forces have also left behind disturbing evidence of atrocities committed against Pec's ethnic Albanian population.
Witnesses say seven ethnic Albanians were killed in this house during the NATO bombardment.
The walls of several rooms have been daubed in anti-Albanian graffiti written in what appears to be blood.
The surrounding neighbourhood is eerily empty.
For the Serbs who have stayed behind in Pec, the situation is increasingly tense.
With K-L-A fighters now back in makeshift headquarters, rolls of barbed wire litter the streets to stop potential clashes between K-L-A supporters and Serb civilians.
K-FOR forces in Pec say their aim is to secure the town so that both sides can live there in safety.
In particular, they are urging Serb civilians not to leave.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We have every intention of providing security for the Serbian people. This is still part of Serbia and this is where the Serbian people belong and this is where we would like them to stay. We do not want anyone to leave Kosovo.

The head of Serbia's Orthodox Church, Patriarch Pavle, also appealed to Serbs to stay.
The Patriarch said he had decided to move his patriarchate to the western Kosovo town of Pec, the birthplace of the Church, to set an example.
But still, the exodus of Serb civilians continues.
It seems the fear of reprisals from the people driven out by Serb forces is too strong to risk relying on K-FOR forces to protect them.

YUGOSLAVIA: KOSOVO: PATRIARCH VISITS REFUGEES IN MONASTRY
Serbo-Croat/Nat
The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church on Tuesday heard the fears of 100 Serb civilians when he visited the monastery where they have been in hiding for the past 10 days.
Patriarch Pavle did his best to reassure the frightened civilians and again called on Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic to hand over power, in the best interest of his people.
Patriarch Pavle came to the Orthodox monastery in Prizren, in south west Kosovo, on Monday to listen to the dispossessed and scared.
But these people are Serbs who -- like many other thousands of Serbs -- have fled their homes in fear of reprisals from the returning ethnic Albanians, their former neighbours.
Patriarch Pavle -- who has written to U-S President Clinton and U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan demanding K-FOR peacekeepers put a stop to anti-Serb attacks -- again called on President Milosevic to step down.
SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat)
The church made a strong appeal to him (Milosevic) to leave power in the best interest of his people and that a
government of national salvation be formed.
SUPER CAPTION: Patriarch Pavle, The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church
Stories of widespread looting of Orthodox churches has further eroded Serbian confidence in K-FOR's ability to prevent the returning Albanians from ethnically cleansing Kosovo.
But fortunately, most of the churches in Prizren appear to have escaped.
Bishop Vladika Atanasie had feared this church in the heart of the city would be stripped bare -- fortunately, this is not the case.
Despite Patriarch Pavle's reassurances, those Serbs who remain in the Prizren monastery still live in fear of their lives.
To them, each passing day is one spent hiding and surviving, knowing that their chances of returning to their once peaceful lives grow ever slimmer.
