NSW Police launch Australia Day operation
Police are urging the community to plan ahead and make Australia Day safe and fun for everyone.
Millions of Australians will celebrate our national day with family and friends at events and parties throughout the state on Monday (26 January 2015).
Acting Deputy Commissioner Frank Mennilli and Assistant Commissioner Alan Clarke launched Operation Float today (Friday 23 January 2015), which will see additional officers deployed to ensure it is an enjoyable day.
General Duties officers from Local Area Commands across NSW will be assisted by specialist officers from Police Transport Command, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Public Order & Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Licensing Police, Mounted Unit, Dog Unit, PolAir and Marine Area Command.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Mennilli encouraged everyone to have a great time but warned police would be targeting bad behaviour.
“Australia Day is more than just a public holiday – it’s about celebrating everything that's great about being Australian. We expect everyone to celebrate safely,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Mennilli said.
“With safety as our top priority, we will deploy additional officers on the ground, on the water and in the air, to provide a highly-visible and mobile policing response.
“The greatest risk to community safety is alcohol-fuelled violence, and we urge anyone who chooses to celebrate Australia Day with a drink to know their limits.
“Don’t spoil a great day with bad behaviour. Consider the consequences of your actions and think before you drink,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Mennilli said.
As part of an on-going commitment to providing family-friendly activities, alcohol-free zones will be in place at dozens of events and in many parks and beaches across the state.
Information about alcohol-free zones is available on local council websites and all event-related information is available on the official Australia Day website: australiaday.com.au.
Operation Commander, Assistant Commissioner Clarke, said police have been working with the Australia Day Council of NSW to ensure all Australians and their mates enjoy the day.
“The high-visibility operation will involve officers from every Local Area Command in the state to provide a safe environment for Australia Day celebrations everywhere,” Assistant Commissioner Clarke said.
“We are expecting large crowds in Sydney, particularly in and around the harbour, and we want these locations to be family-friendly.
“There will be more than 1300 additional officers focusing on alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour, and will swiftly deal with anyone caught ruining the day for others.
“Sydneysiders proved on New Year’s Eve it is possible to have a great time and celebrate a major event without dangerous and criminal behaviour, we want Australia Day to be just as safe,” Assistant Commissioner Clarke said.
With large crowds expected at events across the Sydney Metropolitan area, police are encouraging people to plan their trip ahead of time.
“The best way to get around on Australia Day is on a train, bus, ferry or light rail – especially if you’re headed to Sydney or the harbour, the AFC Asian Cup semi-final at Stadium Australia or the One International Cricket Match at the SCG,” Assistant Commissioner Clarke said.
“It’s also important to plan how you’re getting home, and if you’re planning to drink, don’t drive.”
To plan your trip on public transport visit: transportnsw.info.
“There will also be significant road closures in place throughout the day to facilitate events and manage pedestrian flow, so, if you must drive, expect delays.”
For information about road closures and special event clearways, visit: livetraffic.com.
Australia Day is traditionally the busiest day of the year on the state’s waterways, particularly on Sydney Harbour, and police and maritime authorities want to ensure safety is at top of mind.
“Marine Area Command and Maritime NSW will be out in force to ensure operators of recreational and commercial vessels are compliant with maritime laws,” Assistant Commissioner Clarke said.
“Everyone has an obligation to keep our waterways safe – skippers and passengers need to ensure their own safety, as well as that of others on the water.
“Before heading out, check the vessel is in good working order, ensure all the required safety equipment is on board and check special event maritime information.”
Visit rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime for details on exclusion zones and movement restriction times.
“Finally, for those people celebrating at the beach, or a lake or river, remember to check for hazards and be mindful of changes in weather conditions,” Assistant Commissioner Clarke said.
“If you’re thinking of swimming while drunk think again – swimming while drunk could cost you your life.”
