Patteeswaram Temple History in Tamil explains the history of Patteeswaram Shiva Temple(Thenupuriswarar Temple, Patteeswaram) and Patteeswaram Durgai Amman Temple
Thenupuriswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva located in the holy village of Patteeswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. Shiva is worshiped as Thenupuriswarar, and is represented by the lingam. His consort Parvati is depicted as Nyanambikai (Somakamalambigai). The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the Nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. The temple is associated with the legend of Sambandar to whose view Nandi moved to have a direct view of the presiding deity. Muthupandal festival celebrated in the temple in associated with the legend.
The temple complex covers around four acres and entered through a seven tiered gopuram, the main gateway. The temple has a number of shrines, with those of Thenupuriswarar, his consort Somakamalambigai and Durga, being the most prominent. All the shrines of the temple are enclosed in large concentric rectangular granite walls.
The temple has six daily rituals at various times from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and four yearly festivals on its calendar. The Brahmotsavam festival is celebrated during the month of the Chittirai (April - May) is the most prominent festival.
The original complex is believed to have been built by Cholas, while the present masonry structure was built during the Nayak during the 16th century. In modern times, the temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Tirugnana Sambandar came to Thirusattimutram with Adiyars(saints) to worship at the Shiva temple. Then he started towards Patteeswaram. Since the Solar movement was towards the Mituna star causing oppressive heat waves, the child Sambandar could not manage. The Lord sent his bhoodaganas(servants) to decorate the streets with beautiful Muthu pandal(ceiling made of Pearl). The bhoodaganas prepared the pandal (ceiling) without Sambandar's knowledge. Sambandar was astonished by the reverence of God and enjoyed the shade offered. In order that Sambandar has a view of the Sanctum sanctorium from outside, Shiva ordered Nandi to shift position. Shiva is revered by the hymns of Sambandar.[1]
The name Patteeswaram was derived from the daughter of the divine cow Kamadhenu - Patti, who worshipped the lord here.[2][3] Rama is believed to have been relieved of Sayagathi dosha for killing Vali. Parvati herself performed penance here, while sage Vishwamitra was admitted in the company of Brahmarishis with the backing of Gayatri mantra in this place. Sage Markandeya worshipped here and all the Navagrahas here face the Sun-god Surya and are positioned as per the Agama tradition.

பட்டிக்கன்று மணலினால் ஓர் சுயம்பு லிங்கம் அமைத்து வழிபட்டதால் இவ்வூருக்கு பட்டீச்சரம் என்றும் பெருமானுக்குப் பட்டீச்சரர் என்றும் பெயர்கள் ஏற்பட்டன.
ஞானசம்பந்தருக்கு இறைவன் முத்துப்பந்தல் அளித்து முத்துப்பந்தல் நிழலில் வரும் அழகைக்காண நந்தியை விலகி இருக்கும்படி பணித்த தலம். இங்கு துர்க்கை சாந்த சொரூபியாக , மகிஷன் தலைமீது நின்ற கோலத்துடன்,இடப்புறம் நோக்கிய சிம்ம வாகனத்துடன் அபயகரத்துடன் சங்கு சக்கரம், வில், அம்பு, கத்தி, கேடயம், கிளி ஆகியவற்றை தாங்கி அருள் பாலிக்கிறாள்.
விசுவாமித்திர முனிவருக்கு காயத்திரி மந்திரம் சித்தி பெற்று பிரம்மரிஷி பட்டம் பெற்றதும் இத்தலத்தில் தான் என்கின்றனர். மார்க்கண்டேயர் வழிபட்ட தலம் இது.இக்கோயில் சோழர்களால் கட்டப்பட்டது. சிவனின் தேவாரப்பாடல் பெற்ற 274 சிவாலயங்களில் இது 86 வது தேவாரத்தலம் ஆகும்.
இத்துர்க்கையம்மன் மிகவும் சக்திவாய்ந்தவள். திருமணமாகாத ஆண்களும், பெண்களும், நோயினால் பீடிக்கப்பட்டவர்களும், குடும்ப துன்பத்தில் தவிப்பவர்களும் ஞாயிறு, செவ்வாய், வெள்ளிக்கிழமைகளில் இக்கோயிலின் ஞான வாவியில் நீராடி அம்மனை வழிபாட்டால் குறை நீங்கி நலமடைவர்.

Thirunageswaram is a panchayat town in Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Thirunageswaram is located 8 km east of Kumbakonam.
As of 2001 India census,[1] Thirunageswaram had a population of 9,814. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Thirunageswaram has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 65%. In Thirunageswaram, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
The town receives a lot of rainfall every year (220 cm) and is known for its extremely fertile land and chief crops include Rice, Wheat and Corn. Coconut and Mango farms are also found in abundance.

Naganatha Swami (Naga in Tamil/Sanskrit means Snake and Natha means God) is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. An important feature of Naganatha Swami temple is that of Rahu bhagawan (one of the nine celestial bodies) sannathi. It is the 29th in the series of Tevara Stalams located south of the river Kaveri. Here milk abhishekam is performed daily during Rahukaalam. At this time, the milk that is poured on the statue turns blue when it passes over the body and once again to white after it reaches the floor. This wonder is watched by many daily during the Raahu Kaalam. This is also the only place wherein one can view Rahu bhagawan with his consorts. The mythological serpents Aadi Seshan, Dakshan and Kaarkotakan worshipped Shiva here. Nala worshipped Shiva here too. Gautama Maharishi, Parashara and Bhageerata are also associated with this temple.

Goddess Parvathi made penance towards the lord Shiva from here .The lord decided to test her and delayed his dharshan. Goddess came to know this and stood in one leg and started her penance. Though he got satisfied but extended his test. At last he came to this place in the form of big flame (Jyothiswarubam). Upon knowing the Lord, Parvathi embraced him. Hence the Lord is called as Sivakkozhundeeswarar and the place is called as Siva Sakthi mutram.This temple is opposite to Patteeswaram durga amma temple. This is powerful temple for married couple puja.
Patteeshwaram Temple is a famous Shiva shrine . This temple is also famous for Shantha Swaroopi Vishnu Durga. This was built by the Chola Kings.
Unlike in other temples, the Durga here is very soft in look and grace (Shanta Swarupi). Sitting on her vehicle Lion, placing the feet on the head of Demon Mahishasura, the Goddess appears in a Tribanga stature, eight hands, three eyes and jewels in the ears. Generally, the Lion carrying Kali would be looking on the right side. But the Shanta Swarupi Durga's Lion here faces the left side. In her hands, the mother holds, conch, wheel, bow, arrow, sword, shield and a parrot.

108 Shiva Temple Papanasam(Ramalingeswarar Temple - 108 Sivalayam) is located in Papnasam town dedicated to Lord Shiva situated at a distance of 16 km from Kumbakonam. This temple was built by Lord Rama and the 108 Shiva Lingams were installed and workshipped by him.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama prayed to Shiva in order to be rid of the sin of killing Kara and Dooshna in the war against Ravana and installed 108 Shivalingas in penance at the particular spot. While 107 Shivalingas were made by him, the remaining one was brought from Varanasi by Hanuman.
The shrine faces west in violation of the Hindu canon of temple architecture. The Shivalingas, too, face west. There are shrines to Nandi, Kamadhenu, Murugan and his consorts Valli and Deivayanai, Shanisvara, Annapoorni, and Kasi Visalakshi.
There is a beautiful sculpture(located at the entrance of 108 Lingams)depicting the Shiva Pooja performed by Lord Rama, Sri Lakshmana, Mother Sita, and Sri Anjaneya.

108 சிவாலயம் பாபநாசம் - ஸ்ரீ ராமர் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்த 108 லிங்கங்கள்
மகாசிவராத்திரி நாளில், 108 லிங்கம் கொண்ட 108 சிவாலயத்துக்கு வந்து தரிசனம் செய்யுங்கள். நினைத்த காரியம் யாவும் கைகூடும். பாவங்கள் அனைத்தும் விலகிவிடும் என்பது ஐதீகம்!
இந்தக் கோயிலுக்கு வந்து தரிசித்தால், நம் பாவங்கள் அனைத்தும் நாசமாகிவிடும். இந்த கோவில் இருக்கும் ஊரின் பெயரும் அதுதான் - பாபநாசம்!
தஞ்சாவூரில் இருந்து கும்பகோணம் செல்லும் வழியில் உள்ளது பாபநாசம். கும்பகோணத்தில் இருந்து சுமார் 16 கி.மீ. தொலைவில் உள்ளது பாபநாசம் திருத்தலம்.
மிகப் புராதனமான, புராணத் தொடர்பு கொண்ட திருத்தலம் இது என்று போற்றுகின்றனர் பக்தர்கள். கீழை ராமேஸ்வரம் எனும் பெருமை கொண்ட கோயில். எந்தத் தலத்துக்கும் இல்லாத பெருமையும் அதிசயமும் என்ன தெரியுமா? இங்கே 108 சிவலிங்கங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. ஆக இந்தத் தலத்துக்கு வந்து தரிசித்தால், 108 சிவலிங்க தரிசனம் பெறலாம். 108 சிவாலயங்களுக்குச் சென்று வந்த புண்ணியம் கிடைக்கும் என்பது ஐதீகம்!
சுவாமியின் திருநாமம் ராமலிங்கேஸ்வரர். ராமபிரான் வழிபட்ட திருத்தலம் இது. அம்பாள் பர்வதவர்த்தினி. சிவனாருக்கு உகந்த வில்வத்தை தல விருட்சமாகக் கொண்ட திருத்தலம் இது. குடமுருட்டி, சூரிய புஷ்கரணி, சந்திர புஷ்கரணி, அக்னி தீர்த்தம் என இந்தத் தலத்தின் தீர்த்தங்கள் அனைத்தும் முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்தவை என்கின்றனர் பக்தர்கள்.
இராவணனை அழித்த இராமர், இலட்சுமணன், அனுமன், சீதை ஆகியோருடன் ஊர் திரும்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்போது தங்களை ஏதோ தோசம் பின்தொடர்வது போல் உணர்ந்தார்.
கரன், தூசன் ஆகியோரை கொன்ற பிரம்மகத்தி தோஷமே என்றறிந்தார். அப்போது ஒரு வில்வ மரத்தடியைக் கண்டார். அங்கே குடமுருட்டி ஆறு ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்தது. தோஷம் விலக சிவபூசை செய்வதே உத்தமம் என்று எண்ணினார். அனுமன் உடனே காசியில் இருந்து லிங்கம் கொண்டுவர பறந்து சென்றார். அதற்குள் சீதாபிராட்டி தன் கரங்களினாலேயே மணலில் அநேக லிங்கங்களைபிடித்து வைத்தார்.
அனுமன் காசியிலிருந்து கொண்டு வந்த லிங்கத்தை வெளிப்பிரகாரத்தில் வைத்துவிட்டு உள்ளே வந்ததும் லவரைக்கண்டு தான் கொண்டுவந்த லிங்கத்தை தான் மூலவராக நிறுவ வேண்டும் என்ற ஆணவத்துடன் லவரை தன் வாலினால் கட்டி இழுக்க, வால் அறுந்து வடக்கே சென்று விழுந்தார். (இவ்விடம் வாலறுந்த நல்லூர் அல்லது அனுமான் நல்லூர் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது). அனுமான் மீது பரிவு கொண்ட இராமர், இந்த 107 சிவலிங்கங்களை வழிபட்டாலும், 108வது லிங்கமான அனுமத்லிங்கத்தையும் வழிபட்டு, அம்பாளையும் வழிபட்டாலே முழு பலனும் பெற்று தோஷம் நீங்கும் என்று கூறுகிறார்.
அந்நாள் முதல் “மனிதப் பிறவியில் இராமபிரானின் பாவம் அகல காரணமான இத்தலம் பாபவிநாசம் என்று அழைக்கப்படும்” என்று அருள்வாக்கு அருளினார். பாபவிநாசம் என்ற பெயர் நாளடைவில் பாபநாசம் என்று மருவி விட்டது.
