Muffler Man Sightings - Across America
In the 1960s, International Fiberglass developed a side business of creating large fiberglass figures used to draw attention to businesses lining America's highways.
The company started with a Paul Bunyan, but minor changes to the mold could be used to create a number of other similar characters. The way Paul Bunyon held an axe could also hold a muffler. And thus Muffler Man was born.
As businesses changed or closed over time, Muffler Men were often repurposed - sometimes with just a new paint job or something else to hold, other times with (often clumsy) alterations.
Today, Muffler Man is used broadly to refer to surviving Paul Bunyons, Muffler Men and their altered successors. You can find them all over the US, although more likely along main roads long since bypassed by interstates.
Here are some favorites I've come across in my travels.
The Photos (in order)
S11A0591 - This Muffler Man is actually still selling mufflers at Joor Muffler in Escondido, California
R17A0306 - This Atlanta, Illinois Muffler Man is holding a large hot dog; he stands along Historic Route 66 across the street from the restored classic diner Palms Grill Cafe
R12A0062 - This Muffler Man and large bull stand in front of Sweeney's Village Farm and Home in Waukon, Iowa
L13A1113 - Even tony Malibu, California has its own Muffler Man, this one repurposed to sell Mexican food
U11A0059 - This Muffler Man draws customers to Intermountain Motor Homes & RV in Wendell, Idaho
R11A0216 - I think he's holding the axe backwards, but I'll assume that this Paul Bunyon Muffler Man knows what he's doing; that said, the cow looks nervous here at Lamb's Farm in Libertyville, Illinois
S15A0174 - This Prescott, Arizona Muffler Man was repurposed as the symbol of Big Johnson Realty - and more recently Big Johnson's Store for gamers
U11A0062 - Here's looking at you, Muffler Man
IL Rt 66 B&B Colaw Rooming House Atlanta Illinois
Looking for a Bed & Breakfast along Route 66 in Illinois? The Colaw Room House in Atlanta, Illinois is just what you need, with all the charm and amenities of a B&B and more! To be officially called a Bed & Breakfast in Illinois, an owner / manager must live on the premises. However, at the Colaw Rooming House, whether you rent one, two or all three of our charming bedrooms, you will get the entire house to yourself! That makes it perfect for larger families or couples traveling together to have all the advantages of a Bed & Breakfast, but with privacy.
Located just two blocks off of historic Route 66 in Atlanta, Illinois, the Colaw Rooming House is a beautifully restored home right out of the 1940’s. From the fine craftsmanship of the patterned hardwood floors, to the cozy living room with fireplace, the wrap-around deck, to the kitchen with vintage appliances, you will appreciate the finer things in life from when life was slower and more relaxed.
After a relaxing night’s rest in the quiet, small town neighborhood, your trip back in time will continue just two blocks away where you will have a delicious breakfast at the Palm Grill Diner, a restored restaurant straight out of the 1930’s. And if you can resist trying some of the award winning pies at breakfast, you’ll want to come back later to see what homemade pie was meant to taste like!
Atlanta, Illinois is a perfect spot along Route 66 for Bed and Breakfast aficionados to stay, because of its many attractions and great location. Atlanta is halfway between Chicago and St. Louis, which made it a frequent stopover for travelers going across the country during the heyday of Route 66, and is convenient to both the Logan and McLean County fairgrounds.
Atlanta also has some awesome sightseeing destinations of its own. The Paul Bunyon statue on Arch Street could be the most photographed landmark in all of Illinois Route 66! The Arch Street Artisans Shop, the Gunnar-Mast Trading Post are favorite stops for those who love craft items or Route 66 memorabilia. Stop in to the Arcade and Pinball museum to spend a few quarters in some vintage games, or play 9 holes of golf at the North Greens Golf Course. What Bed & Breakfast could offer you more within walking distance?
So, if you are looking for a charming B&B along the “mother road” that is historic Route 66 in Illinois, then you should check out the advantages of a rooming house: The Colaw Rooming House.
In the days gone by, when travelers were crossing the country on Route 66, there were plenty of little motels to choose from. Motel 6 originally charged only $6, but you didn’t get the charm or the hospitality of a Bed & Breakfast. The same goes today, when the quality of national motel chains varies greatly. Even if you have a good experience at a motel chain, it will never rival the great experience of a quaint, charming Bed & Breakfast experience, like the one you can get at the Colaw Rooming House.
Though the Colaw Rooming House is not ‘legally’ a B&B, it gives you all the a B&B can give you and more. The beds are beautiful and comfortable, the breakfast is provided at the Palm Grill 1930’s diner just two blocks away, and you get the whole house to yourself. What B&B can guarantee you the peace and privacy of your own home, taken right out of the 1940’s, but with cable, flat screen TV’s and WiFi?
You can follow The Colaw Rooming House on Facebook at
Finally, we want to make absolutely sure that people who are searching for a B&B or a Bed & Breakfast can find the Colaw Rooming House, because it is just what you are looking for. However, we want to be clear that technically, since the owners / managers do not live on the premises, it is not a “Bed & Breakfast” per se, even though we provide you with more amenities than a typical B&B.
Remember, if you are looking for charm, privacy and a beautiful B&B experience along Route 66 in Illinois, your best B&B in Illinois is not technically a B&B, but rather the Colaw Rooming House in Atlanta, Illinois.

Bringing Back American Giants (Joel Baker)
You Bet Your Life: Secret Word - Floor / Door / Table
Julius Henry Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 -- August 19, 1977) was an American comedian and film and television star. He is known as a master of quick wit and widely considered one of the best comedians of the modern era. His rapid-fire, often impromptu delivery of innuendo-laden patter earned him many admirers and imitators. He made 13 feature films with his siblings the Marx Brothers, of whom he was the third-born. He also had a successful solo career, most notably as the host of the radio and television game show You Bet Your Life. His distinctive appearance, carried over from his days in vaudeville, included quirks such as an exaggerated stooped posture, glasses, cigar, and a thick greasepaint mustache and eyebrows. These exaggerated features resulted in the creation of one of the world's most ubiquitous and recognizable novelty disguises, known as Groucho glasses, a one-piece mask consisting of horn-rimmed glasses, large plastic nose, bushy eyebrows and mustache.
Groucho Marx was, and is, the most recognizable and well-known of the Marx Brothers. Groucho-like characters and references have appeared in popular culture both during and after his life, some aimed at audiences who may never have seen a Marx Brothers movie. Groucho's trademark eye glasses, nose, mustache, and cigar have become icons of comedy—glasses with fake noses and mustaches (referred to as Groucho glasses, nose-glasses, and other names) are sold by novelty and costume shops around the world.
Nat Perrin, close friend of Groucho Marx and writer of several Marx Brothers films, inspired John Astin's portrayal of Gomez Addams on the 1960s TV series The Addams Family with similarly thick mustache, eyebrows, sardonic remarks, backward logic, and ever-present cigar (pulled from his breast pocket already lit).
Alan Alda often vamped in the manner of Groucho on M*A*S*H. In one episode, Yankee Doodle Doctor, Hawkeye and Trapper put on a Marx Brothers act at the 4077, with Hawkeye playing Groucho and Trapper playing Harpo. In three other episodes, a character appeared who was named Captain Calvin Spalding (played by Loudon Wainwright III). Groucho's character in Animal Crackers was Captain Geoffrey T. Spaulding.
On many occasions, on the 1970s television sitcom All In The Family, Michael Stivic (Rob Reiner), would briefly imitate Groucho Marx and his mannerisms.
Two albums by British rock band Queen, A Night at the Opera (1975) and A Day at the Races (1976), are named after Marx Brothers films. In March 1977, Groucho invited Queen to visit him in his Los Angeles home; there they performed '39 a capella. A long-running ad campaign for Vlasic Pickles features an animated stork that imitates Groucho's mannerisms and voice. On the famous Hollywood Sign in California, one of the Os is dedicated to Groucho. Alice Cooper contributed over $27,000 to remodel the sign, in memory of his friend.
In 1982, Gabe Kaplan portrayed Marx in the film Groucho, in a one-man stage production. He also imitated Marx occasionally on his previous TV sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter.
Actor Frank Ferrante has performed as Groucho Marx on stage for more than two decades. He continues to tour under rights granted by the Marx family in a one-man show entitled An Evening With Groucho in theaters throughout the United States and Canada with piano accompanist Jim Furmston. In the late 1980s Ferrante starred as Groucho in the off-Broadway and London show Groucho: A Life in Revue penned by Groucho's son Arthur. Ferrante portrayed the comedian from age 15 to 85. The show was later filmed for PBS in 2001. Woody Allen's 1996 musical Everyone Says I Love You, in addition to being named for one of Groucho's signature songs, ends with a Groucho-themed New Year's Eve party in Paris, which some of the stars, including Allen and Goldie Hawn, attend in full Groucho costume. The highlight of the scene is an ensemble song-and-dance performance of Hooray for Captain Spaulding—done entirely in French.
In the last of the Tintin comics, Tintin and the Picaros, a balloon shaped like the face of Groucho could be seen in the Annual Carnival.
In the Italian horror comic Dylan Dog, the protagonist's sidekick is a Groucho impersonator whose character became his permanent personality.
The BBC remade the radio sitcom Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel, with contemporary actors playing the parts of the original cast. The series was repeated on digital radio station BBC7. Scottish playwright Louise Oliver wrote a play named Waiting For Groucho about Chico and Harpo waiting for Groucho to turn up for the filming of their last project together. This was performed by Glasgow theatre company Rhymes with Purple Productions at the Edinburgh Fringe and in Glasgow and Hamilton in 2007-08. Groucho was played by Scottish actor Frodo McDaniel.
