Pavan Park Equestrian Trail Run | Lethbridge, Alberta
Located within the city limits of Lethbridge, Alberta (1km north of Uplands.) Pavan Park is a large wilderness park area spanning the Old Man River valley, and stretching up into the Coulees towards the highway.
Note: The trails in this valley are prone to flooding in rainy and winter seasons, and the eroded Coulee trail is dangerous in wet conditions. Please use caution when using this trail outside of dry seasons.
This trail run follows the city maintained equestrian trail used by stables housed at a nearby farm across the highway. The path starts from the upper parking area and follows the top of the coulees to a beautiful descent with full view of the Pavan Park valley below. After a slightly rugged descent, the trail switches into a relatively flat shale trail that follows the river and eventually loops back into rougher horse trails again.
For the final ascent, I chose to show off the other primary option of getting into the park by taking the paved road, which is a solid 700m of roadside paved asphalt leading back up towards the starting point at a constant gradual ascent.

A Tale of Two Galts: The Story of Lethbridge
This video highlights the lives of Sir Alexander Galt and his eldest son, Elliott Galt. After years in politics and business and helping to found Canada as a Father of Confederation, rather than looking to retire, Sir Alexander Galt continued in the work that he thought was important in building a country. Believing that westward expansion was vital to stopping the Americans and knowing that a growing country needed coal, Galt worked with investors in England and eastern Canada to develop the North Western Coal and Navigation Company to mine coal in Lethbridge’s river valley. From this one company, a series of other companies would develop which would oversee coal mining, railways, irrigation projects and more that would contribute to the development of southwestern Alberta.
Elliott Galt became the man on the scene overseeing the work of the various companies, which included the mine but also housing for workers, a sawmill in the Porcupine Hills to provide the timber for construction and the mines, the construction of several boats for transporting coal and when that didn’t work building a railway to Medicine Hat which would be joined by other railways and then irrigation.
These two men had a dramatic effect on what is now southern Alberta. The video looks at the two men, their legacy and the world they helped to create.

Full Coal Banks Trail Lethbridge, Alberta Timelapse
Taken during fall, 2016. I ran the full 34.77km of the Coal Banks Trail in Lethbridge Alberta with my camera and a GPS unit to track the distance. I started at the Pavan Park end point north of the city, and followed the trail all the way around the city over the course of 3 days, with over 1200 photos taken by the end.
The trail is not clearly marked in a few locations, so there was one small section after Henderson Lake where I went a little further over city sidewalks until I met back up with the path about one kilometer later near Lethbridge College. Continuing on, I followed the path until just past the graveyard where I ended the first day due to failing light conditions.
Day 2 I resumed the path down into the Coulees on the south side past the Lethbridge police firing range at Botterill Bottom Park. Shortly after, the path turns abruptly at Indian Battle Park, and joins up with the Whoop up Drive overpass where you get a beautiful scenic view of the Old Man River valley. After only about 100 meters on the west side of the bridge, the Coal Banks Trail cuts under Whoop Up Drive and leads up towards the University of Lethbridge. The trail avoids the main facility buildings, and cuts straight through to the urban sections of the West Side through a scenic detour that eventually wraps around to Nicholas Sheran Park.
Past Nicholas Sheran, the Coal Banks Trail mixes it up a bit, and cuts in the middle of urban blocks past several schools and smaller parks on the West Side before eventually returning to Whoop Up Drive. As before, you retrace your steps over the river, and this time break off towards Fort Whoop Up in Indian Battle Park. Several other historic sites are passed as you make your way towards the iconic Viaduct rail bridge that Lethbridge is named after. At this point you are officially in Helen Schular Nature Preserve, and after a short trip down the path between the forest and the coulees, you will finally find yourself at the other end point of the Coal Banks Trail.
