Teignmouth is a town and civil parish in Teignbridge in the English county of Devon, situated on the north bank of the estuary mouth of the River Teign about 14 miles south of Exeter. Teignmouth grew from a fishing port associated with the Newfoundland cod industry to a fashionable resort of some note in Georgian times, with further expansion after the opening of the South Devon Railway in 1846. Today, Teignmouth port still operates and the town remains a popular seaside holiday location.
Teignmouth is located on the north bank of the mouth of the estuary of the River Teign, at the junction of the A379 coast road, the A381 road to Newton Abbot, and the B3192 which climbs up to the A380 on Haldon and hence on to the M5 12 miles away. Teignmouth is linked to Shaldon, the village on the opposite bank, by a passenger ferry at the river mouth and by a road bridge further upstream.
Den Crescent and its central Assembly Rooms, laid out in 1826 by Andrew Patey of Exeter, still survive relatively unchanged today. St. Scholastica's Abbey, on the road to Dawlish, built in 1864 by Henry Woodyer is a notable Gothic Revival building, and the Roman Catholic Church, on the same road, is a late work by Joseph Hansom, the inventor of the hansom cab.
In 1894, there were 26 public houses in Teignmouth . Pubs today include the Blue Anchor Inn on Teign Street and the Devon Arms on Northumberland Place. The River Beach is home to a varied selection of seasonal and permanent beach huts. Teignmouth and Shaldon museum was completed in 2011. The town's newest public building is the Pavilions Teignmouth, a community arts and enterprise centre on the Den.
Apart from its sea beach and Teignmouth Pier with amusement arcade and rides, the beach wraps around the spit at the head of the river Teign providing a river beach, commonly known as the Back Beach (dogs are allowed all year on this part of the beach), on the estuary side which overlooks the harbour with its moorings for many pleasure craft, and has views up the estuary to Dartmoor. An 18-mile (29 km) long waymarked route known as the Templer Way has been created between Haytor on Dartmoor and Shaldon. It closely follows the route of George Templer's granite tramway, his father James's Stover Canal and finally the estuary to Teignmouth.

Proposed Sea Wall update from Holcombe to Teignmouth.
Today I've been Speaking to Richard from Network Rail who is going to talk us through the proposed new stretch of railway between Parson's Tunnel and Teignmouth.
The consultation will last for six weeks from 20 January to 1 March and Network Rail will again be conducting consultation events in Dawlish, Teignmouth, Holcombe, Newton Abbot, Torquay and Exeter.
Network Rail is inviting communities to share with them their views on further developed proposals to protect the vital rail line between Teignmouth and Holcombe.
The stretch of railway between Parsons Tunnel, near Holcombe, and Teignmouth is at potential risk from rising sea levels and landslips from steep, unstable cliffs. This risk was highlighted when the cliff failed in 2014, severing 50 Devon and Cornwall towns, cities and communities from the rest of the UK rail network for six weeks.
The consultation will last for six weeks from 20 January to 1 March and Network Rail will again be conducting consultation events in Dawlish, Teignmouth, Holcombe, Newton Abbot, Torquay and Exeter.
A free shuttle service will be offered to residents for the consultation sessions in Teignmouth. The events, being held at the golf course because of a lack of availability of venues in the town, will have a service running regularly between the railway station and the events at the golf course.
All other venues for the consultation are either central to the towns or villages they are being hosted in or easily accessible by public transport.
The latest refined set of proposals will explain revised design, environmental research and construction and will be illustrated by a 10-metre long scale model of the site.
Mike Gallop, route director for Network Rail, said: “We are grateful to everyone that took the time to provide their views in our first round of consultation, and I would encourage anyone who has an opinion on our proposals to provide us with feedback as these may lead to further refinements before we apply for consent to undertake the work.
“During the first phase of public consultation we were able to meet many hundreds of local residents to get their thoughts on our plans to enhance the resilience of this nationally important stretch of railway line that connects the South West to the rest of the country. I’m certain that this second round will be equally as beneficial, and I look forward to hearing the feedback on our revised plans.”

Torquay is a seaside resort town on the English Channel in Devon, south west England. Known for beaches such as Babbacombe and cliffside Oddicombe, its coastline is nicknamed the English Riviera. Torquay Harbour near the town centre offers shops, cafes and a marina. Torre Abbey, a monastery founded in 1196, has art galleries and extensive gardens featuring plants from local writer Agatha Christie's novels.
Torquay is a seaside town in Devon, England, part of the unitary authority area of Torbay. Torquay lies 18 miles (29 km) south of the county town of Exeter and 28 miles (45 km) east-north-east of Plymouth, on the north of Tor Bay, adjoining the neighbouring town of Paignton on the west of the bay and across from the fishing port of Brixham.
Torquay economy, like Brixham's, was initially based upon fishing and agriculture, but in the early 19th century it began to develop into a fashionable seaside resort, initially frequented by members of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars while the Royal Navy anchored in the bay. Later, as the town's fame spread, it was popular with Victorian society. Renowned for its healthful climate, the town earned the nickname the English Riviera.
The writer Agatha Christie was born in the town and lived there during her early years and there is an Agatha Christie Mile, a tour with plaques dedicated to her life and work.
Torquay has two railway stations. Torquay railway station is situated near the sea, close to Torre Abbey Sands. Torre railway station is situated a little inland adjacent to the road leading to Newton Abbot. Torquay is connected to the UK motorway network by the A380, which traces the outskirts of the town as Hellevoetsluis Way and Hamelin Way, leading to the A38 and the M5 at Exeter.

Reuben Lenkiewicz Art Gallery A Short Film One Of Two
The Reuben Lenkiewicz Art Gallery

FILM ONE ABOUT THE PAVILIONS EXHIBITION
COMMISSIONED BY REUBEN LENKIEWICZ
“BE AMAZED BY WHAT YOU SEE “.
Commissioned By Reuben Lenkiewicz
This is a short film about the exhibition shown at The Teignmouth Pavilions “A Feast For The Eyes”.
The show was open for two months and consisted of paintings from The Reuben Lenkiewicz Art Gallery and some private works from models and friends of Robert Lenkiewicz.
Curated and hosted by Reuben Lenkiewicz the son of the artist and manager of The Reuben Lenkiewicz Art Gallery in the Teignmouth Arts Quarter.
As well as the exhibition the reception included a number of special guests.
Reuben invited models who posed for Robert Lenkiewicz to the event and suggested they bring a small painting or drawing if they wished.
Amongst the many thousands of people who sat for Robert Lenkiewicz over the years Robert painted many famous people including the Queen. Robert also painted Billy Connolly, Terry Waite, Ruby Wax, Dawn French and Micheal Foot.
The Tv and Radio Presenter Judi Spiers was also painted along with the irrepressible Gus Honeybun. Robert asked Judi when he was working on a Education Project and it was suggested Gus Honeybun had a educational position for small children.
Reuben said,
“Judi Spiers was a star and remembered Robert with affection. So supportive and generous. When I asked her to come to the reception she very kindly said yes. Judi also brought Gus with her and gave a wonderful talk about her memories of posing for Robert”.
Reuben said, “Gus Honeybun was very enthusiastic and happy to take a break from Dartmoor where he now lives with his family”.
Gus said,
“I was greatly impressed by Mr Lenkiewicz. I admired Roberts paintings and Robert admired my wisdom. He often came to visit me for advice”.
Reuben also invited Steven Barrett a long standing friend of Robert Lenkiewicz to give a talk about his memoirs of the artist.
Other guests included Mike Alsford a photographer who has his documentary photographs of Robert Lenkiewicz’s Barbican Studio in the exhibition. Also Cllr Robert Phipps Teignmouth Deputy Mayor introduced the speakers.
This was a fascinating opportunity to find out more about Robert Lenkiewicz a unique and extraordinary artist.
The evening included a extensive selection of paintings by Robert Lenkiewicz with a collective value of quarter of a million pounds.
Over 120 people came to the Lenkiewicz Reception at The Pavilions and 1000’s of visitors will have viewed the exhibition over over this summer. It ends on the 16th July.
Many of the guests brought their own smaller paintings and drawings which had never been seen in public. People coming from as far as Liverpool London and Cornwall.
Reuben also brought a number of paintings from his own family collection.
As well as 30 works from his Art Gallery in The Teignmouth Arts Quarter.
Reuben said,
“I am very happy with this event the size of the turn out proves Teignmouth is a town which appreciates fine art and is
happy to take Robert Lenkiewicz to its heart”.
Reuben said about this exhibition,
”I have selected from my art gallery in Teignmouth paintings showing Robert’s passion for expressing love, beauty, and sensuality through art.
I also wanted to show Robert’s unrivalled technical ability in painting.
This is shown in the three extraordinary self portraits on show. We have a particularly unique self portrait painted by Robert when he was 15 years of age”.
Reuben said,
“Robert’s artistic genius is in some ways still a closely kept secret held by those in the southwest and those that are passionate about him. But it is my conviction that this will change and is changing. True genius is rarely recognised in an artists lifetime. When a unique artist is so far ahead of the times he or she lives in it can take decades for the establishment to catch up”.
“The reception and exhibition was an opportunity for the people of Teignmouth and the tourists who visit the town to be introduced to the paintings of Robert Lenkiewicz.
It is also a opportunity for Roberts legacy to be brought to more people.
For example I have commissioned a film from Luke Abbott the director of King-Collins Productions about my experience of Teignmouth.
It will be about the future of Teignmouth and the importance of the arts to its economic and cultural life.
This exhibition and my Art Gallery will be part of the film including interviews with Judi Spiers and the models. But it will also show the development of my Art Gallery within the community. This is to show how the economic success of a community is completely dependent on the strength of its artistic culture.

Teignmouth 40° Heatwave May God Help us all.
A Sunshine Sickie
••••••••••••••••••••••••••
We can't cope with a heatwave in England with many of us having the trademark mop of thick and curly ginger hair and the good old freckly milk bottle skin we inherited from our ancestors.
We just don't know how to behave in the heat , we can use brollies and zip up our Primark windcheaters in the wind and rain , but the Sun is a completely different kettle of fish , we go bananas in the Sun , absolutely apeshit crazy , screaming and shouting like we do on the
' Big One '
Blackpool Pleasure Beach
The first thing we do if the Sun is out during the working week , is to throw a well rehearsed sickie at work with that old chestnut of ,
' the runs and bad guts '
and
' stuff coming out of both ends '
from the dodgy prawns in the fictitious chow mein from The Happy Wok we never had , leaving our managers having to actually do some work for a change , instead of munching on Jaffa Cakes and drinking tea in their posh offices.
Absenteeism is rampant in this country when the Sun is out as we usually get very little of it.
We then head for the seaside or countryside in our snazzy F&F shorts and the more than comfortable Sports Direct XXXXL Slazenger T-shirts taking towels , speedos and a bikini just in case we go for a swim in the sea , river, canal or duck pond it doesn't matter we have to take full advantage of those rays and cool down when we get too hot.
Well don't forget to pack a little bit of a picnic too , that sea air can make you feel peckish , why not take some good old scotch eggs , jam doughnuts and bring the left over trifle from Sunday's Christening , oh and bring a flask of tea and some sugar free orange cordial , and a big must is the olive oil in an old salmon paste jar to try and help you get a proper tan , oh oh , and pack some calamine lotion too and cotton wool , in case you over do it in the strong sun , if you know where I'am coming from.
On arriving at our destination the first earache we encounter , is parking the car , have you got the right change to feed the meter ? or do you drive a mile away from the seafront and park your car outside someone's terraced house with a little barking dog in the front room window , ripping the curtains to shreads because of your arrival , you then do the long walk to the sea front with all your bits'n'bobs.
The beach is packed eventually you find a suitable place , not paying the bloody deck chair man , he can F.R.O.
[ F*ck Right Off ]
if you borrow
a kiddies little plastic rake you can scrape away all the pebbles and shells and lay out your £4 George beach towels. Ahhhhhh luxury , now's the time to slap plenty of olive oil on your face, not forgetting the back of your neck.
Ahhhhhhhhhh a well deserved day off with full pay life is good very good why not have a bit of scotch egg trouble is you haven't packed a knife so you find an old lolly stick on the beach that should do it and wash it in the sea , move over Ray Mears sit down Bear Grylls.
Bloody beautiful so tasty why not wash it down with a swig of tea from the flask , no alcohol for me today got to drive home not getting bottled, bagged, banged and banned like our Brian did in 1979.
Hang on a minute , I could just have 2 pints of Stella in The Jolly Roger Pub 200 yards down the beach , it does keep winking at me and the Stella would calm me down in this searing heat , it does look very tempting ah well better get some sunshine first to piss me mates off with me new tan , who needs Lloret de Mar when you've got all this free sunshine over here ?
Hey up why are those seagull's squawking at me and are coming over here , oh no there's two wasps on the jam doughnuts , good God just dropped me bloody scotch egg in the sand can't be doing with all.this stress arrrrgggghhh !!
Four hours of hard sun bathing later you decide to stroll up to The Jolly Roger to have yourself those well earned Stella's and why not ?
Your face feels very tight with a mask like sensation but not to worry it's just getting use to your new tan. After two pints you nip to the bogs for a leak and then look in the mirror and see the servere debilitating injuries to your face epecially on the back of your neck that feels like you've got a hot Tefal FV3778 Iron strapped to it , oh oh I'am in trouble now egg size blisters everywhere ,
Why is the room spinning ?
Three days later you wake up in hospital with a full head bandage with slits for your eyes nose and mouth , and you reflect back to your wonderful day out at the seaside as you are wheeled to the awaiting Ambulance , you wave goodbye to the Health assirants and the Car park attendant you can't beat the good old NHS I love the Sun.
