Alexander III Russian Museum 4.
The State Russian Museum (formerly the Russian Museum of His Imperial Majesty Alexander III) is the largest depository of Russian fine art in St Petersburg.
The museum was established on April 13, 1895, upon enthronement of Nicholas II to commemorate his father, Alexander III. Its original collection was composed of artworks taken from the Hermitage Museum, Alexander Palace, and the Imperial Academy of Arts. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, many private collections were nationalized and relocated to the Russian Museum. These included Kazimir Malevich's Black Square.
The main building of the museum is the Mikhailovsky Palace, a splendid Neoclassical residence of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich, erected in 1819-25 to a design by Carlo Rossi on Square of Arts in St Petersburg. Upon the death of the Grand Duke the residence was named after his wife as the Palace of the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, and became famous for its many theatrical presentations and balls.
Some of the halls of the palace retain the Italianate opulent interiors[1] of the former imperial residence. Other buildings assigned to the Russian museum include the Summer Palace of Peter I (1710--14), the Marble Palace of Count Orlov (1768--85), St Michael's Castle of Emperor Paul (1797-1801), and the Rastrelliesque Stroganov Palace on the Nevsky Prospekt (1752--54).The Ethnographic Department was originally set up in a building specially designed by Vladimir Svinyin in 1902[2]. The museum soon housed gifts received by Emperor's family from representatives of peoples inhabiting various regions of the Russian Empire. Further exhibits were purchased by Nicholas II and other members of his family as State financing was not enough to purchase new exhibits. In 1934, the Ethnographic Department was given the status of an independent museum: the Russian Museum of Ethnography.
Руският музей (рус. Русский музей /до 1917 г. «Русский Музей Императора Александра III»/) е най-големият музей в света на руското изкуство.

Sabatynivka Archaeological Treasure | Virtual Museum Tour
The Mykolayiv Regional Museum of Local Lore. It took a hundred years between its establishment and opening it as a museum. The first findings included in the exhibits were made by sailors back in 1792. The first and genuine Mykolayiv Museum of Local Lore was opened by a lawyer and amateur archaeologist in 1913. It changed its addresses several times and today it is one of the first museums of ancient history in Ukraine. Its objects are the result of exhausting and tremendous archaeological work and a true stroke of luck and success. Yet, sometimes the smile of “lady luck” is more reminiscent of a grin. It is a case of discovery in the village Kuriachi Lozy in the Mykolayiv oblast.

STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday welcomed Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands to the Kremlin, the first stop on the monarch's three-city state visit to Russia.
She was accompanied by her eldest son, Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, and high-ranking Dutch officials.
Putin presented her with a white-and-purple bouquet of roses and tulips, and the two conversed in German - a language Putin perfected during his tour as a KGB agent in East Germany.
After the Kremlin welcoming ceremony, Dutch Foreign Minister Jozias van Aartsen and his Russian counterpart Igor Ivanov signed a joint cooperation programme for 2001-2003.
The agreement included an invitation to Putin to visit the Netherlands, and provided for Dutch aid in developing alternative energy sources, building flood barriers and safely disposing of nuclear weapons and chemical weapons arsenals in Russia.
Beatrix' agenda in Moscow will include meetings on Wednesday with the two parliamentary speakers and Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov. She was also scheduled to attend a performance by the Dutch National Ballet at the capital's Maly Theatre.
The queen was also due to travel to the Volga River city of Nizhny Novgorod, where she was scheduled to visit a centre for training television journalists and meet with Volga regional governor and former Russian prime minister Sergei Kiriyenko.
Kiriyenko heads a new presidential commission responsible for overseeing the destruction of Russia's huge chemical weapons arsenal, a project funded in part by the Dutch government.
On Thursday, she was to travel to the northern port of St. Petersburg for visits to the Hermitage Museum, the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet and the Pavlovsk Palace - a former imperial residence connected with Beatrix' distant relative, the 18th-century Czar Paul I.
Beatrix's state visit to Russia was initially scheduled for November 1998, but the Kremlin requested a postponement so that then-Russian President Boris Yeltsin could recuperate from a bout with pneumonia.

Mariupol
Mariupol is a city of regional significance in southeastern Ukraine, situated on the north coast of the Sea of Azov at the mouth of the Kalmius river. It is the tenth-largest city in Ukraine and the second largest in the Donetsk Oblast. Population: 461,810 (2013 est.). Following the capture of Donetsk city by pro-Russian insurgents associated with the Donetsk People's Republic in 2014, Mariupol was made the provisional administrative centre of Donetsk Oblast. The city was retaken on June 13, 2014 by government troops and has been under heavy bombardment and the fighting has intensified as of August 2015.
Mariupol was founded on the site of a former Cossack encampment named Kalmius. It was granted city rights in 1778. Mariupol has been a centre for the grain trade, metallurgy, and heavy engineering. The Ilyich Steel & Iron Works and Azovstal propelled Mariupol onto the European stage in the 20th century as one of the largest and most productive plants. Mariupol played a key role in the industrialization of Ukraine. Between 1948-1989 the city was known as Zhdanov due to the Soviet authorities frequently renaming cities after communist leaders. Today, Mariupol remains a centre for industry, as well as higher education and business, a legal centre, and the economic engine of Pryazovia.

STORYLINE:
The Queen of the Netherlands continued her tour of Russia on Wednesday with a visit to the Federation Council, the upper house of parliament.
Queen Beatrix was welcomed by Yegor Stroyev, the chairman of the Council.
After their meeting, Stroyev said that his royal guest expressed great respect for Russian traditions and warm relations that had emerged between the two countries since the time of Peter the Great.
Asked about the possibility of restoring the monarchy in Russia, Stroyev said the country should not return to what existed more than a hundred years ago.
Instead, Russia should head for normal democracy and order, the chairman said, adding that he was glad the country is living without shootings or unrest.
Earlier in the day, the Dutch monarch had met the Communist speaker of the State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament.
The Queen was also scheduled to meet Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and was due to host a performance by the Dutch National Ballet in honour of President Vladimir Putin and his wife, Lyudmila, at the Moscow's Maly Theatre in the evening.
The Queen is accompanied by her eldest son, Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, and high-ranking Dutch officials.
On Thursday, Beatrix is to travel to Nizhny Novgorod, where she is expected to visit a centre for training television journalists and meet former Prime Minister Sergei Kiriyenko, now presidential representative for the Volga River region.
Kiriyenko heads a new presidential commission responsible for the destruction of Russia's huge chemical weapons arsenal, a project funded in part by the Dutch government.
The monarch is then scheduled to travel to St. Petersburg, where her great-grandmother - Grand Princess Anna Pavlovna and the Queen of Netherlands after marriage - was born.
In the city, she will visit the Hermitage Museum, the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet and the Pavlovsk Palace.
It's Queen Beatrix's first visit to Russia since she became head of state 21 years ago.
The visit was initially scheduled for November 1998, but the Kremlin requested a postponement so that then-Russian President Boris Yeltsin could recuperate from a bout with pneumonia.
Beatrix last visited Moscow when she was still crown princess, in May 1973.

SUMMARY
=======
Russia (Russian: Росси́я, tr. Rossiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijə]), officially the Russian Federation (Russian: Росси́йская Федера́ция, tr. Rossiyskaya Federatsiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijskəjə fʲɪdʲɪˈratsɨjə]), is a country in Eurasia. At 17,125,200 square kilometres (6,612,100 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world by area, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area, and the ninth most populous, with about 144.5 million people as of 2018, excluding Crimea. About 77% of the population live in the western, European part of the country. Russia's capital, Moscow, is the largest metropolitan area in Europe proper and one of the largest cities in the world; other major cities include Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod. Extending across the entirety of Northern Asia and much of Eastern Europe, Russia spans eleven time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk and the U.S. state of Alaska across the Bering Strait.
The East Slavs emerged as a recognizable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. Founded and ruled by a Varangian warrior elite and their descendants, the medieval state of Rus arose in the 9th century. In 988 it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire, beginning the synthesis of Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined Russian culture for the next millennium. Rus' ultimately disintegrated into a number of smaller states; most of the Rus' lands were overrun by the Mongol invasion and became tributaries of the nomadic Golden Horde in the 13th century.
Built in 1936 by Frīdrihs Skujiņš 1890-1957, during the Soviet occupation, the Council of Ministers building was the office of the Baltic Military District of the USSR. It is on the site of the cemetery of the church of Saint Gertrude which stood on the site of the Riga Cinema in Elizabetes iela. Guntis Ulmanis, the first president of Latvia after renewed independence, has an apartment in the building.
Born in Riga in 1939, Guntis Ulmanis, grandson of Karlis Ulmanis, studied Economics at the Latvian State University after which he worked on the board of the Bank of Latvia. He was a member of the Communist Party from 1965 to 1989 and a member of Riga City Council. In 1993, Ulmanis was appointed President and served two terms.
That Guntis Ulmanis had a notoriously shaky grasp of English was seen when he addressed a prestigious lawyers' conference in the United States beginning his remarks with: I'm pleased to be in the company of such distinguished liars. He of course meant lawyers!

The District Courthouse was built in 1888 to the designs of Jānis Fridrihs Baumanis. It was designed so that from the air the building looks like the Tsar's crown. On the building are two plaques; one to Baumanis who was granted a rent-free apartment on the top floor and the other to Gunārs Astra
Jānis Fridrihs Baumanis 1834-1891, who became the first professionally qualified Latvian architect, was the son of a river pilot. He began his working life at the age of 11 learning his father's trade, however eight years later he became a carpenter and within three years, he was managing 40 workers.
Ever wanting to improve himself he then worked for four years with the architect Heinrich Scheel. In 1859, he was noticed by the St Petersburg architect Ludwig Bohnstedt, who encouraged him to enroll in the Berlin Royal Building Academy and later in the Saint Petersburg Academy of Art.
Gunārs Astra, 1931-1988, whose only crime was the defense of human rights, was arrested by the Soviets in 1961 and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. On his released in 1976 he returned to Riga, but seven years later was rearrested and imprisoned again, only to be released a few weeks before his death. Astra was a light in the darkness, whose spirit proves that there is no power on earth that can strangle the desire for freedom and the aspiration of people to live in a democratic country based on the rule of law.
The plaque on side of the District Court, which includes a quote from his second trial, reads:
In this building on 15 December 1983 the fighter for the freedom of Latvia Gunārs Astra was sentenced.
I believe that this time will disappear like a nightmare. This gives me the strength to stand and breathe here.
He went on to say not included on the plaque Our people have suffered beyond belief and therefore have the experience and we will survive this dark stage as well.
While still a student, together with Robert Pflug he won the contract for what is now the Saeima Parliament building. Outside his profession, he was involved in the 1861 Berlin festival of gymnastics and was one of the founders of the Saint Petersburg Association of Architects. In 1868, he helped found the Riga Latvian Society of which he was chairman (1872-65).
He also constructed three temporary timber concert halls in Riga for the song festivals of 1873, 1880 and 1888. In total Baumanis built over 150 buildings in Riga, He also built 17 Russian Orthodox churches in Livland province.
