Historic Paw Paw Tunnel Hiking Adventure! C&O Canal National Park
This is a video I put together on 4/26/2017 while hiking the C&O Canal Tow path near and at the historic Paw Paw Tunnel.
The Paw Paw Tunnel is a 3,118-foot-long (950 m) canal tunnel on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O) in Allegany County, Maryland. Located near Paw Paw, West Virginia, it was built to bypass the Paw Paw Bends, a six-mile (9.7 km) stretch of the Potomac River containing five horseshoe-shaped bends. The town, the bends, and the tunnel take their name from the pawpaw trees that grow prolifically along nearby ridges.
The project began in 1836 with scheduled completion in two years, but there were many difficulties in the process of construction. The construction company seriously underestimated the difficulty of the job, violence frequently broke out between immigrant laborers of different ethnicities, and wages were often unpaid due to the company's financial problems. The tunnel was finally completed but it nearly bankrupted the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company. The lengthy construction and high cost forced the company to end canal construction at Cumberland, Maryland, in 1850, rather than continue to Pittsburgh as originally planned.
The tunnel was used by canal boats until the C&O closed in 1924. The tunnel and towpath are now maintained for public use as part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Though never one of the longest tunnels in the world, Paw Paw Tunnel remains one of the greatest engineering feats of its day. I hope you enjoy this adventure as much as I did! Definitely worth checking out if your ever in the area. Located in Oldtown, Maryland.

Great Falls and C & O Overnight Backpacking Father and Son
Looking for an adventurous location to explore outdoor near Washington D.C. that is suitable for all ages and animals. Try day hiking or backpacking the Great Falls and Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. Julian Baby Bear and I Papa Bear completed 6 miles overnight hike to enjoy each other's company and nature. We saw an array of animals and challenged ourselves physically and mentally. We hiked the Billy Goat Trail B, the C and O Towpath, and the River trail. We camped at the Swains Lock or lock 21, mile marker 16.5.
Special thanks to the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC). Billy Goat B Trail was an awesome trail to explore for a father and son beginners team.

Welcome Back To Jebus Gaming!
Today you are seeing our very first episode of Dive The World! For our first trip we decided to travel to Cumberland MD, which was a great town! While in Cumberland, we went dumpster diving at quite a few places. We went CVS dumpster diving, Game store dumpster diving, Dollar General dumpster diving and we dumpster dived at a bunch of other places! We also explored the town of Cumberland, and enjoyed what else the town had to offer. We explored a haunted tunnel, which was a ton of fun for sure! The Paw Paw Tunnel was around a mile long, and extremely dark towards the center, which made it really creepy! This was my first time exploring a haunted tunnel, and I was definitely not disappointed! We also decided to try and pull some funny pranks on people in public, and started dropping movie prop money on the ground of the malls. Significantly more people gave the money back, and only two people took it. Overall we had an awesome experience in Cumberland, and can't wait to take our next Dive The World Trip!

Biking the C&O Canal Towpath From the Paw Paw Tunnel Trailhead to Old Town
C&O Canal Lock 75, Cumberland, Maryland
While traveling west on the scenic byway, Maryland Rt. 51, enjoying the amazing beauty of rolling wooded hills, farmlands, the rows of round bales of hay, horses, cows, sheep and dark green fields of young crops of corn, eventually we needed to find a rest stop. Coincidental to the urgency of our needs, we came upon an open area with a small gravel parking lot, one Porta Potty and a sign that read Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, Lock 75. After relieving ourselves, we explored the restored canal site and lock house, and walked a short distance down the C&O trail, recording this video along the way.

Bicycle ride through the tunnel at Red Rocks park and amphitheatre
Steve and I rode from his house, up to the amphitheatre at Red Rocks park, and back home again. Roundtrip distance was only about 14 miles (22 kilometeres) but provides lots of elevation gain throught the trip. Near the top of the amphitheatre is this short little tunnel that you can see in the video.

bicycling the C&O Canal, part 7
I love the C&O Canal, and I guess that's why there is going to be a 8 part series of videos on this incredible bicycle touring destination. I spent alot of time riding these 185 miles and took many days off in towns along the way, mostly to edit videos and find places with good wifi signals to upload them.

TRIP THROUGH POTOMAC VALLEY ON THE POTOMAC CANAL 1917 EDUCATIONAL MOVIE 51964 MD
DOWN THE POTOMAC is a 12 minute silent film, produced by the Edison Company in 1917. It depicts a traveler in a small boat, being pulled by a horse, along the historic Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. The trip starts at its north-west terminus in Cumberland, Maryland, and heads 184 miles south east to Georgetown, Washington, D.C. The canal, completed in 1850, was in operation between 1831-1924, and was one of the last extant mule-hauled towpath canals built in the north east region of the fledgling United States. By the time the canal was completed, the parallel and efficient Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, which could run trains 365 days per year, was also in operation, competing for business. The canal followed the beautiful Potomac River Valley, even to this day. Highlights of the trip include the passage through the Paw Paw Tunnel which today, can be hiked through on a wooden walkway built within in the tunnel. The passenger will go through lift locks, and pass both abandoned and in-service boats along the canal. The canal passed near Harpers Ferry, W.Va., but on the Maryland side of the Potomac River, and through Great Falls, Maryland ,a piece of non-navigable river due to the sharp and high rocks located in the area. Finally, the trip ends in Georgetown, where traffic passed through the Potomac River. This film is significant for transportation historians and buffs since it shows the canal still in operation, as within a few years, a storm would finally damage much of the poorly maintained canal. Today, the canal is a National Park landmark, with several portions still watered with 19th century era interpreted boat rides. Work continues to this day with the restoration of the aqueducts, locks and the maintenance intensive Paw Paw Tunnel.
