This video shows one of the walks available at Paxton Pits, at Little Paxton in Cambridgeshire, England.
Paxton Pits is a quarrying site at which the disused pits have been filled with water and made into a nature reserve, tat has become popular with walkers.
Paxton Pits Nature Reserve covers 77 hectares of lakes, meadow, grassland, scrub and woodland. It also offers walks beside the River Ouse.
The site is still a working quarry, and is set to become a considerable larger nature reserve over the coming years as the quarrying comes to an end.

St Neots, Little Paxton, River Great Ouse Walk was about 7.5 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of field, riverside, woodland and enclosed paths, pavements, gravel paths and roads sections. The walking was easy on level ground. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. There were no stiles to negotiate.
Along the walk you visit: St Neots and the Ouse Valley Way beside the River Great Ouse; Little Paxton Pits Nature Reserve and Little Paxton; the Ouse Valley Way and St Neots again. Scenery includes: fabulous riverside scenery with riverside dwellings, boats, narrow boats and water fowl; lovely lakes, woodland and fields. You may also encounter cattle in fields.
I did this walk with my wife Anne whilst on a combined cat sitting and Cambridgeshire walking holiday during September 2019. We drove from our accommodation in Woodhurst, Cambridgeshire, north of St Ives, to the starting location of St Neots, Cambridgeshire. We parked in Riverside Park car park, at grid reference TL 179 601, which was the start location for the walk.

LITTLE PAXTON, Cambridgeshire
This impressive three storey Georgian style home offers six double bedrooms and four bathrooms set on the edge of a waterside nature reserve, with wonderful south facing views. Located in a small private cul-de-sac of similar properties it offers three reception rooms, a large reception hall, a kitchen breakfast room and utility room. There are wonderful walks just round the corner, including a boating lake and fantastic bird watching.
This contemporary family home stands in a select development of well constructed, individual houses. Set in a quiet cul-de-sac on the edge of the village and next to Paxton Pits Nature Reserve this spacious house, built in a Georgian design on three floors, provides stylish and flexible accommodation. Whether it be for convenient day to day living or space for home working, with the large kitchen breakfast room and sitting room opening directly onto the garden the layout is very practical and pleasant, especially in the summer when convivial supper parties can take place and guests can spill out into the garden. The south facing enclosed garden is well designed, with lawns and shrubs and it also boasts productive apple and pear trees; definitely an area to sit in peace and tranquillity with the only sound being birdsong. The rear of the house backs onto Rudd Pit, one of the lakes on the reserve, and the upstairs windows provide excellent views of the fabulous birdlife.
Kingfisher Close is just a short walk into the centre of the village where there is a post office/convenience store plus a good pub for socialising. There is a primary school in the village with an excellent choice of state and independent schools in the area. The market town of St Neots, which is just two miles away, offers larger supermarkets and other amenities including a cinema and restaurants, plus a main line railway station providing an efficient service into London Kings Cross of around forty minutes. Little Paxton held its first Scarecrow Festival on May16th 2009.
Cycling Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire - 17th July 2018
Starting in Great Staughton, up to Little Staughton, picked up the North Bedfordshire Heritage Trail, past Bushmead Priory into St Neots, down to the Rivermill (beer break!), round back of Tesco under A428, back into town via St Mary's Street, out to Little Paxton, around Paxton Pits Nature Reserve (Coffee Break!), over A1 to Hail Weston Ford, bridleway across fields to Cage Lane, then back into Great Staughton.... 21.4 Miles in total..... great ride!
Little Paxton Scarecrow Festival 2012
Little Paxton held it's annual Scarecrow Festival on May 16th 2012.
The object of the festival is to help local groups and charities to raise much needed funds.
The scarecrows were judged this year by Himish Patel (Eastenders).
