S**t to do around Moscow - Episode 3: Kamiak Butte
Kamiak Butte is one of the major features of the Palouse, rising up over 1000 feet for a spectacular southern view with a hike through lush forest on the north face. The hike is an easy 3-mile loop with a 700 foot elevation gain from the parking lot. On a clear day from the summit, you can spot the Wallowas and the Seven Devils on the horizon.
On this trip, I brought my family along. Clara hiked the whole thing on her own, and Adam rode in the backpack carrier for the first time and loved it.
Kamiak Butte is a county park run by the Whitman County Parks and Recreation department. There is a campground if you want to spend the night, and a well-maintained picnic area with a playground for the kids.
A map of the trails can be found here:
The 3 mile loop is displayed in red. An optional 5-mile loop on the primitive trail is displayed in blue.
