Paynes Prairie Preserve – Gainesville Florida – Exploratory day trip May 07, 2015
A nice park with some interesting features. Thanks goes to the ranger at the main entrance (am) who suggested I check out the La Chua trail area. I probably would not have visited that area if he hadn't suggested it. I'm going to research and see if there is a best season to see the bison and horses. Would be cool to see them in the wild...

RV CAMPING-Paynes Prairie State Park near Ocala Florida
In this last minute RV Camping trip to Payne's Prairie State Park we did quite a bit of hiking trying to see or find the Bison and wild horses.
Unfortunately we didn't see the Bison but the park was great! Now they are closed for some renovations for few months from what we hear. Once they reopen we plan on going back again and hike more of the trails in search of the elusive Bison!

Gainesville, Florida after Hurricane Irma - Part Two - Paynes Prairie
Hurricane Irma passed through Florida a few weeks ago, but many areas of the state are still seeing the effects of this hurricane.
Paynes Prairie is a 21,000 acre protected ecosystem, home to alligators, bison, wild horses and other animals. It is in the center of the Paynes Prairie Basin. The basin's primary source of drainage is Alachua Sink. During occasional wet periods, the basin will become full. October 2017 is one such time.

Driving through The Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park - Interstate 75 - Gainesville, Florida
Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is a Florida State Park, encompassing a 21,000-acre (85 km2) savanna in Micanopy, Florida, south of Gainesville. It is also a U.S. National Natural Landmark. It is crossed by both I-75 and U.S. 441 (which has a scenic outlook ramp). It is in the center of the Paynes Prairie Basin. The basin's primary source of drainage is Alachua Sink. During occasional wet periods, the basin will become full. A notable period occurred from 1871 to 1891 when the Alachua Sink was temporarily blocked. During this period, shallow draft steamboats were a frequent sight on Alachua Lake in the center of the prairie. The region was also historically known as the Alachua Savannah. Its drainage has been modified by several canals. Since 1927, Camps Canal has linked the basin to the River Styx which leads to Orange Lake and eventually the Atlantic Ocean through the St. Johns River. That reduced the basins water intake by half. Additional changes to the prairie's environment have been detrimental to its hydrology. In 1970, the state of Florida acquired the land and has been in the process of restoring the environment to a more natural condition ever since.
Heavy rains have temporarily restored Alachua Lake on several occasions, most recently in September 2017, when Hurricane Irma dropped several inches of rain and damaged a levee, flooding much of the basin for months

More than 20 distinct biological communities provide a rich array of habitats for wildlife and livestock, including alligators, bison, horses and more than 270 species of birds. Eight trails provide opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and bicycling, including the 16 mile long, paved Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail. Fishing on Lake Wauburg is allowed and a boat ramp provides access for canoes and boats with electric motors. Gasoline powered boats are not allowed. Full-facility campsites are available for overnight visitors. Annual special events include Stargazing Party, Paynes Prairie 5K, and Fire Fest. Paynes Prairie: La Chua Trail
Moving to Gainesville was troublesome for me. I left my family, friends and my job in south Florida. I was lost, but it was the discovery of Paynes Prairie that helped ease my anxieties and loneliness. I didn't know we had wild bison and horses in Florida. Paynes Prairie I love you!
