THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

Metung - Can You Imagine !
Metung is a small Village of 1000 permanent residents located on a narrow peninsula of land separating Bancroft Bay and Lake King. Situated in East Gippsland and ideally placed with the surrounding protected waters of the Gippsland Lakes (400 square kilometers) Metung is a comfortable 3.5 hour drive from Melbourne.
The main activities are of a boating and fishing nature, but Metung is also known for it's scenic walks. You may also choose to visit one of the areas many galleries, the food trails, wineries or hire a boat and explore the Ninety Mile Beach, Chinaman's Creek, Boxes Creek or Nungurner. Embark on a cruise aboard one of the boats that leave Metung and travel to Lakes Entrance where you can see the entrance to the Lakes system or hire a dayboat and travel to Barrier Landing where you can walk across to Ninety Mile Beach. It is not uncommon to observe a pod of dolphins feeding in the Bay or nearby channels. Fish from a boat or from one of the many available jetties on Bancroft Bay. Soak up some sun on the shores of Lake King where there is a safe swimming beach for adults and children.
The Village Green is the venue for the famous Metung Farmers Market held on the second Saturday of each month where local in-season produce is showcased for all to buy. Explore the Village and its shops and restaurants or just enjoy a drink at the famous waterfront Metung Hotel. Watch the Pelican feeding daily at noon in front of the Hotel.
Whether it is a fantastic sunrise over Bancroft Bay or you are enjoying a glass of wine as the sun sets spectacularly over Lake King you are always able to enjoy both ends of the day and everything in between.
Visitors are able to choose from a wide selection of accommodation in Metung which has motel, bed and breakfast, cabin, self contained apartments, townhouses and houses both in the Village and surrounding areas.
You may also hire yachts and cruisers for overnight stays where you can tie up in some of the quiet creeks or jetties that abound in the protected waters of the Lakes system.
There are always new places to find, visit and experience in the Gippsland Lakes so come along and be a part of this wonderful region which is also only 2 hours from the Victorian ski slopes & high country.
