The story of Lord Muruga is described in Skanda Purana. According to the legend, in the olden days the demon Soorapadman tortured the Devas, who went to complain to Lord Vishnu and Brahma. They assigned Kamadeva to awake Lord Shiva from his penance, who later gave birth to Kartikeya. Karthikeya killed Soorapadman and saved the devas. Muruga is depicted as the god of love and war. Kartikeya married Valli by love and married Deivayanai by winning the war held at Tiruchendur. Kaumaram is the sub-sect of Hinduism in which Kartikeya is worshipped as the supreme deity.

The great Tamil poet and saint Avvaiyar was tested by Muruga here.
In an episode of Divine Play with Avvaiyar, one of the most famous devotees of Muruga, the Lord enacted the following drama. One day Avvaiyar became tired while traveling under the hot sun and sought refuge under the shadow of a fruit tree, hungry and thirsty, when a boy who sitting on the tree asked her whether she wanted fruits from the tree. When Avvaiyar told him that she did, the boy asked Avvaiyar whether she wanted roasted fruits or unroasted fruits. Avvaiyar who was a famous Tamil poet and incredibly knowledgeable litterateur scoffed silently at the very thought of the existence of a roasted fruit and decided that the boy didn't have knowledge even about a fruit. However, tired as she was, she decided that she didn't want to argue with the boy and asked him to pick unroasted fruits for her, which the boy then proceeded to do. Several fruits fell out of the tree and Avvaiyar picked them up,blowing on them to remove the sand. Smiling, the boy asked Avvaiyar if she was blowing on his roasted fruits to cool them down.

Avvaiyar was astonished as to how a small village cowboy could have played such an intelligent drama. Blowing on the fruit to remove the sand was indeed poetically comparable to an attempt to cool roasted fruits. Humbled by the immense poetic knowledge and clever wordplay of the boy, Avvaiyar begged the boy to reveal his true identity, unable to reconcile herself with the fact that a simple cowherd could have such profound thoughts. The boy then disappeared and in his place, Muruga appeared. Avvaiyar, stunned to find herself in Divine Company, bowed in obeisance and realising the infinite nature of knowledge, prayed to Muruga to bless her and continue bestowing his Infinite Grace on her to aid her virtually endless quest for knowledge.

Pazhamuthirsolai Murugan பழமுதிர் சோலை
View of the Pazhamuthirsolai (Azhakarmalai) Murugan temple பழமுதிர் சோலை December 2012. With songs P.Alamelu and S.Pushpa. Among the Arupadaiveedu, Pazhamudircholai is the last (6th). The great Tamil poet and saint Avvaiyar had been tested by Lord Murugan here. In order to play with Avvaiyar who was one of the very famous devotees of Lord Muruga, the Lord played a drama.

Pazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple
Pazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple, also named as ‘Solaimalai Murugan Temple’ is located near the city Madurai of Tamilnadu, dedicated to Lord Murugan and also one of the ‘Arupadai Veedu Temples’.
Pazhamudhircholai temple is situated atop a hill with dense forest about 19 kilometers from the Temple City Madurai.
Here, ’Avvaiyar’ the famous female Tamil poet and a great devotee of Lord Murugan, was said to be examined by Lord Murugan from His playful drama.
The drama of Lord Murugan concerning Avvaiyar was to acquire an answer from her raising the question, “Which fruit is she needed, whether cooked or uncooked”, which is popularly mentioned in Tamil language as “Sutta Pazham or Sudadha Pazham”.
Avvaiyar started thinking, “Is there any cooked fruit in the World”, and thought that the boy was even unaware about this simple thing. However, being hungry she did not wanted to argue about this with that boy and asked Him for uncooked fruit. The boy trembled the tree and fruits on the tree started falling down on the mud. Avvaiyar took the fruits and blew the fruits to remove the mud. After this act of Avvaiyar, the boy asked her whether the fruits were warm. Avvaiyar was surprised by the intelligence of the boy, realizing puffing on the fruit to remove mud is likely blowing air to reduce the heat on the cooked fruit.
Avvaiyar was astounded by this great comparison and asked the boy surprisingly, “Who are you actually?” And the boy was suddenly disappeared and appeared in the form of Lord Murugan. Avvaiyar bowed before Lord Murugan with pleasure and she requested Lord Murugan to confer her with bountiful knowledge.
