UK: Republicans burn Loyalist symbols on Derry bonfire

Hundreds of onlookers watched as a bonfire festooned with British and Loyalist flags went up in flames in Bogside area of Derry, known officially as Londonderry, on Thursday evening.
The bonfire was erected in the early hours of the morning and towered over the surrounding iconic Meenan Square.
A number of symbols of British rule in Ireland were tied to the bonfire, including one banner referencing the case of solider F, a former British paratrooper charged with the death of two civil rights protesters on 'Bloody Sunday' in 1972.
Bonfires are traditionally lit in Derry and throughout Ireland in August to mark the Catholic Feast of the Assumption of Mary.

UK: Orange flames light up unionist celebrations
Hundreds of bonfires were lit across the country for Eleventh Night celebrations Thursday, the night before the Twelfth of July annual commemorations to mark the Battle of Boyne that took place the same day in 1690. Heavy police presence in the traditionally unionist and loyalist area of Shankill Road, saw large burning bonfires, music and dancing ahead of an official march and demonstration. Across Northern Ireland each year thousands of loyalists gather in celebration of what they mark as a victory over Catholics resulting in the sovereignty of the protestant monarchy.
Police closed some parts of roads in east Belfast because the bonfires had spread too close to the roads. Hundreds of homes were without power where the bonfires had been built close to power lines in residential areas with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attending several incidents in Belfast, Newtownards and Derry.
The Orange Order has said there will be protests in response to a ban by the Parades Commission on the return leg of the July 12 march from passing by a flashpoint in Ardoyne in north Belfast.
The Battle of the Boyne was fought between the Catholic King James and the Protestant King William - two rival claimants of the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones - across the River Boyne on the east coast of Ireland. The battle, won by William, was a turning point in James' unsuccessful attempt to regain the crown and ultimately helped ensure the continuation of Protestant ascendancy in Ireland.
UK: NORTHERN IRELAND: STORMONT CASTLE FIRE
English/Nat
Fire has destroyed part of Stormont Castle in Northern Ireland, scene of last month's historic talks between the British government and pro-independence campaigners Sinn Fein.
Firefighters say there's no evidence the blaze was deliberate.
But a senior Protestant politician, opposed to Sinn Fein, was more sceptical.
Fire has completely destroyed the old Commons chamber in the Stormont Parliament Building near Belfast. No one was injured in the blaze, but dozens of firefighters were called to the scene.
The neo-classical building was the home of Northern Ireland's parliament until it was abolished in 1972. More recently, Stormont has been the setting for British officials to meet with representatives of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA.
The IRA called a ceasefire on September 1st, while the loyalists did the same on October 13th.
While there is no immediate suspicion that the fire was deliberately set, some of the bystanders were more sceptical.
SOUNDBITE:
I think that any attack on the building is an attack on the principles - and symbolically - of what the Union stands for. And the Union at the present time was never in more danger, politically, everything about the Union is under attack.
SUPER CAPTION:
Reverend Ian Paisley, Democratic Unionist
Police are conducting a full enquiry into the incident.

Galtymore Cricklewood follow up song If I dont go to heaven I'll surely go to hell,
New original song, If I don't go to heaven I'll surely go to Hell.
I started dreaming, it was getting late.
I met Saint Peter at the pearly gates,
He smiled at me and he said with a grin,
Don’t even try you, you’re not getting in.
You’ve been a sinner all of your life,
Drinking and gambling and you had three wives,
I laughed at Peter and I said who cares,
If I don’t go to heaven I’ll surely go to hell.
Chorus
If I don’t go to heaven then I’ll surely go to hell,
Me and the devil will get on so well,
We’ll go out drinking in the pubs down below,
I hear every bar has a show-band show.
I’ll drink the devils whisky and I’ll taste the devils gin,
All of the vices you can count me in,
I’ll be (oh) so busy meeting up with old friends
If I don’t go to heaven then I’ll surely go to hell.
Peter turned a paler shade of white,
My attitude has given him a fright,
Let me see what I can do,
To save a sinner as bad as you.
Ten years in purgatory to cleanse your soul,
Take it or leave it I can do no more,
I looked at Peter and I shook my head,
Just show me the road to hell instead.
Chorus x2

The devastating details of a long ago war are eloquently presented in this documentary. The Crimean War: A Clash of Empires is a well-researched look into the conflict that shook Europe during the years 1853-56. The bloody conflict that pitted Russia against a large European coalition is shown here to be part of a chain of long-held antagonisms that continue to this day. Perhaps of all the things we remember of this confrontation, the only positive aspect that emerges is the appearance of Florence Nightingale.
