KELOWNA BOUND FALL 2012
KELOWNA BOUND FALL 2012
This video documents a trip from Nakusp to Kelowna, with a side trip to Penticton, and then back to Nakusp. It starts out at the Needles Ferry, Wikipedia:
The Needles Ferry is a cable ferry across Lower Arrow Lake in British Columbia, Canada. It is situated 59 kilometres (37 mi) south of Nakusp and links Needles and Fauquier.
The ferry operates under contract to the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and is free of tolls. It travels back and forth every thirty minutes, from the first departure at 5am until the last departure at 10pm, with a crossing time of about five minutes. The ferry has capacity for 30 vehicles and 144 passengers.[1]
The ferry is diesel powered and pulls using a winding drum on a pair of 1-inch-diameter (25 mm) cables, plastic coated to prevent wear, which are suspended in the lake. The crossing is about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) in length.
A ferry has been in operation from Needles since 1913.[2] Early farmers built the first ferry using Ford Model T parts. A small community in Needles, which pre-dated the ferry, was an area of fruit trees and scrub farming. Farmers provided fruit and vegetables to the mines of the Lardeau district (between Upper Arrow Lake and the head of Kootenay Lake). Canadian Pacific Railway lake steamers connected the farms to Arrowhead and Robson. The valley was flooded in the late 1960s by the construction of the Hugh Keenleyside Dam at Castlegar in the 1960s, leading people to abandon the town, after being expropriated from the lakeshore by Hydro. The ferry landing and a small cemetery are all that remain.[3]
Fauquier is the centre of the area that includes Edgewood and Burton with a few houses, gas station and grocery store.
Then we went over the Monashee Pass to Vernon and on to Kelowna. Monashee Pass, 1,205 m (3,953 ft), is a mountain pass in the Monashee Mountains of the Southern Interior of British Columbia. Located southeast of Cherryvile and is used by British Columbia Highway 6 connecting Vernon to Nakusp on Arrow Lake, and beyond to the cities of the West Kootenay. It is the prominence col for Big White Mountain, which is the highest mountain to its southwest.
In Kelowna we visited The Vibrant Vine vineyard. Then went to West Kelowna to visit friends. Then to Penticton to visit the Penticton Art Gallery and The Book Shop. Then back to Kelowna and finally back over the Monashee to the ferry and back to Nakusp. We left on Monday and returned on Thursday.

Kelowna - Okanagan Valley
Kelowna - Okanagan Valley
Instrumental Music by Kate Ryan.
Kelowna is a city on Okanagan Lake in the Okanagan Valley,
in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada.
It serves as the head office of the Regional District
of Central Okanagan. Its name derives from an
Okanagan language term for grizzly ear.
Kelowna is the third largest metropolitan area
in the province and ranks as the 22nd largest in Canada,
with a population of 179,839 in 2011. It is the largest city
in BC that is not located on the coast.
Nearby communities include the district municipality of West Kelowna (also referred to as Westbank, Westside) to the west across Okanagan Lake, Lake Country and Vernon to the north, as well as Peachland to the southwest and, further to the south, Summerland and Penticton.
Father Charles M. Pandosy, a French Roman Catholic Oblate missionary, arriving in 1859 was the first European to settle at Kelowna, a place named L'anse au sable (Bay of Sand) in reference to the sandy shoreline. Kelowna was officially incorporated in May 4, 1905.
In May 2005, Kelowna celebrated its Centennial. In the same year, new five lane William R. Bennett Bridge began construction to replace the three lane Okanagan Lake Bridge. It was part of a plan to alleviate traffic problems experienced during the summer tourist season, when the influx of tourists adds to the commuters between West Kelowna and Kelowna. The new bridge was completed in 2008.
Central City is the sector near the Harvey Avenue from the Okanagan Lake to Highway 33, comprising the city's major business and commercial centres, such as Downtown, Capri, Landmark and Midtown.
Downtown is located by the Okanagan Lake. Multiple beaches, parks, restaurants and stores are located near the waterfront and Bernard Avenue. The cultural district within downtown is home to art galleries, museums, sports arenas and several government offices including the law courts and city hall.
