Peacock River Cruise - Korla, China - 2015
After a full day of classroom visitations followed by a banquet which included many toasts to continuing friendships, we headed off to experience an evening river cruise on the Peacock River. Having experienced a number of river cruises in my city of Winnipeg, I expected a nice rather oh hum experience. I was so wrong!

Images of Korla and Urumqui, China - May, 2015
In May 2015, I had the opportunity to visit Korla and Urumqi cities which are located in China's Xinjiang province. An eight hour flight from Shanghai was required to reach this area of China.
This province is China's most westerly region, it borders eight countries - Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. The Hans Chinese form the largest ethnic group in this province and the Ughurs are the largest minority group. Most Ughurs are Muslim and Islam is an important part of their life and identity. A visit to this area of China was truly a unique experience!

Xinjiang Official Says Police Patrol Normal in Korla City
Chinese state-run Global Times said on Thursday that security in the far western Xinjiang region is at normal levels, after reports that the area has been placed under a high security alert.
Radio Free Asia reported on Tuesday that authorities tightened security in the central and southern parts of Xinjiang. It follows a knife attack last Thursday that killed four people in the city of Korla.
A Xinjiang spokeswoman denied security has been ramped up, saying that the police patrols are normal in the city.
The renewed violence in Xinjiang came during the Communist regime's Two Sessions political meetings. Analysts say it's time that the regime changes its heavy-handed approach towards ethnic minorities.
[Professor Zhao Shiling, Minzu University of China]:
This hard suppression goes against the order of modern society and civilization. It does nothing to achieve stability. [The regime] needs to be respectful towards the minorities' culture, economic and political rights. This is how you unite the nation.
It's unclear what sparked last Thursday's attack.
China's Xinjiang region is home to largely Muslim Uyghurs. They complain that their culture and religion have been suppressed by Chinese authorities. The Chinese regime says it's developing the region and making use of its natural resources.
In 2009, bloody ethnic riots broke out in Xinjiang's capital, Urumqi. The region is under constant security patrol. RFA reports that a curfew was put in place after the most recent violence.

Scenes from a Chinese Sports Meeting
Every year, the universities in China have a Sports Meeting. Each departments' students compete against one another in track-and-field style events for 3 days.
