Breckenridge is a Colorado town at the base of the Rocky Mountains’ Tenmile Range. It's known for its ski resort, year-round alpine activities and Gold Rush history. The Victorian core of this former mining town is preserved as the Breckenridge National Historic District, running primarily along Main Street, with colorfully painted buildings from the 1880s and '90s housing shops, galleries and restaurants.
Set at the foot of the marvelous Tenmile Range, Breck is a surviving mining town with a vibrant historic district. The down-to-earth vibe is a refreshing change from Colorado's glitzier resorts, and the family-friendly ski runs and gold-nugget history make it Summit County's most atmospheric destination. Regardless of whether it’s snow or shine, the BreckConnect Gondola up to the base of Peak 8 is where the fun begins.
The vast, hulking mountains here rise and fall, merging seamlessly into one another to present a perfect alpine backdrop. Laced with ski runs and hiking trails and stitched together with pine groves, they blaze gold in the morning, glow pink at dusk and fade into a deep shadowy blue as the sky pales then darkens, revealing endless stars best viewed from a frothing hot tub next to the roaring Blue River.

Gold Runner Alpine Mountain Coaster - Breckenridge, Colorado
Mountain Coaster
Source: Wikipedia
A mountain coaster or alpine coaster is a gravity driven amusement ride with bobsled-like cars on tracks installed on a mountain. It is similar to alpine slides where a low-wheeled sled is used to navigate the track but instead of running over a smooth concave tracks like the alpine slide, alpine coasters run on rails with up-stop wheels like roller coasters. Thus, alpine coasters are safer and faster than alpine slides as it prevents overturning when going too fast on a curve. Tracks are tubular rails like a steel roller coasters while some have monorail-type tracks. But unlike a roller coaster, the rider has the capability to control their speed with its rider-controlled brake system. Alpine coasters can also operate year-round even through light rain and snow.
Safety features, speed, tracks and layout vary by manufacturer. Leading makers of mountain coasters (with trade marks in parenthesis) include Wiegand (Alpine Coaster), Brandauer (Summer Toboggan), Alpine Products (Alpine Mountain Coaster), and Erbschloe Fun Construct (Rolba Bob).
The longest alpine coaster in the world is Tobotronc at Naturlandia in the tiny Principality of Andorra in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. It is 5.3 km long. The highest alpine coaster in the world is the Alpine Coaster of Glacier 3000 in Gstaad,
Switzerland with the starting elevation of 9,747 feet (2,971 m) and a length of 3,300 feet (1,000 m).
United States
Alpine Coaster at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs, Colorado was the very first alpine coaster in the United States when it opened in 2005. The ride starts with a downward run of 3,400 feet (1,000 m) and then followed by 1,000 feet (300 m) lift.
Gold Runner Alpine Coaster at the Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado with a downhill run of 2,500 feet (760 m).

Top 10 Reasons to Visit Breckenridge in Spring
Breckenridge is best in the springtime.
The 2015 GoPro Big Mountain Challenge
Last year, Breckenridge and GoPro introduced the GoPro Big Mountain Challenge. This IFSA sanctioned event take place on the Six Senses terrain on Peak 6, Breck’s newest terrain. With steep lines, tight chutes, and big cliff drops, this youth freestyle event will test some of the best big mountain free riders in the country as they compete for points in the IFSA series.
Due to the popularity of last years inaugural event, this year the Challenge was opened up to youth ski and snowboard athletes aged 9-18. Both male and female riders dropped in and picked their lines carefully, as points were awarded for strong skiing, cliffs drops, airs and tricks. All the age groups were throwing down their absolute best. While there wasn't much new snow on the course, the weather was gorgeous both Saturday and Sunday and the snow stayed soft throughout. This made for some fast lines and impressive reactions from the athletes.
Being an IFSA sanctioned event, we had riders competing from all over the United States. Their enthusiasm for such an extreme sport at their young age ensured a fantastic show full of insane lines, big crashes and a pumped up crowd that couldn't get enough.
Congratulations to this years winners! Click here for a detailed breakdown of the results. And stay tuned for next season; it will be even bigger.
The GoPro Big Mountain Challange is part of Breckenridge's Spring Fever season ending event lineup. Book your stay now and don't miss any more of the action.
