CASTLETON | Walk through Castleton, Peak District, Derbyshire, England
CASTLETON | A walk around the village of Castleton in the Peak District, Derbyshire, England ????????
The village of Castleton in Derbyshire is a village in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England, at the western end of the Hope Valley on the Peakshole Water, a tributary of the River Noe, between the Dark Peak to the north and the White Peak to the south.
Lying in the lee of mysterious Mam Tor, locally known as the 'Shivering Mountain', Castleton is one of the most beautifully-situated villages in the White Peak.
Whether you approach through the dramatic limestone gorge of Winnats Pass or from the Hope Valley, you'll appreciate the fabulous views created by its location on the cusp of the Peak District's breathtaking limestone and gritstone landscapes.
Whatever the weather, Castleton has something to offer visitors of all ages at any time of year. If it's fine and you're feeling fit, climb the steep steps up to the atmospheric Norman ruins of Peveril Castle, completed in 1086 for William Peverel, a favoured knight of William the Conqueror.
Castleton is the only place in the world where the semi-precious stone Blue John, unique to the Peak District and Derbyshire, can be found.
Some of the finest examples - including the largest known single piece of Blue John, The Pillar, can be found in Treak Cliff Cavern in Castleton, where you can also explore a fairytale underground world of stalactite and stalagmites.
Like Castleton's other show caves, Treak Cliff was once a lead mine. Peak Cavern has the largest natural cave mouth in Europe - large enough for cottages and even an inn to be built inside in previous times. Nowadays the space it used for special events, including Christmas carol concerts.
Speedwell Cavern offers an underground boat ride to the eerie 'Bottomless Pit', while Blue John Cavern, opposite Mam Tor, is the deepest of the caves and also contains examples of Blue John.
You can buy jewellery crafted from Blue John in the village, and Castleton Visitor Centre, with its museum and visitor centre, is a mine of information. Fortify yourself in numerous cafés, tea rooms and pubs before heading off to tackle the Great Ridge Walk, one of the finest routes of its kind in the country.
Castleton is most definitely a recommended countryside walk with fresh air, great views of the caves, the castle and the various pubs, cafe's, restaurants and gift shops. A great day out

Castleton - a short history…
Castleton was founded after the building of Peveril Castle in 1086, the castle was built by William Peveril, son of William the Conqueror. There was possibly an Anglo Saxon settlement on the east side of the village near Hope as there is an embankment running through the village, and s shaped strip fields on the east side, known as furlongs. The village developed under the protection of the garrison and grew and prospered from this period. The population was made up of farmers, retailers, men at arms and others. The village was on the main packhorse routes and an important stopover in coaching days in later centuries. It was also an important lead mining and market village. The oldest part of the village is by the river, Peakshole Water near Cavern Walk. Along Back Street can be seen several folds where houses were built around 3 sides of the courtyard, which had a narrow opening onto the street, where animals were penned at night.
This picturesque village is now designated a conservation area and much of its history can be read in its layout and architecture.
Geology
Castleton is on the boundary of the northern gritstone ‘Dark Peak’, and the southern limestone ‘ White Peak’.
The ridge to the north marks the beginning of the gritstone / shale beds giving rise to the high gritstone moorland plateaux. The gritstone shale bands can be seen in the face of Mam Tor and the instability of the shale beds is illustrated in the massive landslip on the A 625 at Mam Tor.
The hills to the south of the village are ancient coral reefs made of carboniferous limestone and behind them is the massive limestone laid down in a warm coral sea. The cave and underground river systems contain spectacular formations. The joints and cracks have been mineralised and contain veins of lead, fluorspar, barytes and calcite.
In Treak Cliff hill, a very pretty form of fluorspar, only found in this area, can be seen in two show caves. It is known as Blue John and is mined to make jewellery, which is sold locally. The mineral crystals were impregnated naturally during the formation with hydro – carbons, possibly altered by latent radio-activity in the rocks, to give them an attractive blue and yellow banding.
There are 4 caves at Castleton accessible by guided tour. Treak Cliff cavern and Blue John cavern contain beautiful caves decorated with stalactites formations, and blue john stone. Peak cavern is the resurgence of a huge river system. In its enormous entrance are the remains of a rope-making walk. Speedwell mine is an old lead mine and visitors are taken along a flooded tunnel by boat.
This walk through Castleton starts outside the Swiss Cottage hotel and B&B and ends right outside the Castleton museum and visitor centre.

[ Absolute Wild Productions ]
The Peak Cavern, also known as the Devil's Arse is one of the four show caves in Castleton, Derbyshire, England. Peakshole Water flows through and out of the cave.
Unlike the other show caves in the area, Peak Cavern is almost entirely natural; the only artificial part of the cave was blasted to bypass a low tunnel that was only accessible by lying down on a boat. The cave system is the largest in the Peak District, and the main entrance is the largest cave entrance in Britain.

Peak Cavern - A Trip to Moss Chamber
A 3m climb on the north wall of Upper Gallery about 150m upstream from Mucky Ducks leads into Pickering’s Passage - an unimposing 1m diameter phreatic tube. This is the start of a fine sporting trip which culminates in one of the best decorated chambers in Peak’s lower series.
It was also the scene of a terrible tragedy that began to unfold on Sunday 22nd March 1959 when Neil Moss a 20 year old Oxford undergraduate became wedged in a narrow vertical tube which leads off this chamber.
Erratum: The book 'Race Against Time - A History of the Cave Rescue Organisation' was written by Jim Eyre and John Frankland - not Franklin as shown in the closing credits.
4k HD Drive and wander around Castleton Peak District UK Derbyshire England Castle Town
An unplanned drive and wander around Castleton, in the Peak District which is a district of Derbyshire. One of my favourite drives when going to Manchester from Sheffield is through the gorgeous Village of Castleton.
Here are few 4k clips I took on my camcorder with a couple of friends. A lovely Sunny but cold January Monday.
I didn't get chance to get any video of the inside of the
Castle or inside the Peak Cavern. I may make one in the future.
Anyway, thought that I would share, enjoy...
I have also uploaded an Identical Video in 4k 24p with a filter that makes it look more theatrical, please go and check it out and let me know which you prefer.
Please note I'm not a photographer or videographer. I know my shots arent that good, only had my camera a few days and literally this was just point and shoot whatever I saw and trying to keep up with my friends who kept telling me to stop trailing behind!
Enjoy =)

Walking in The Peak District & Exploring Castleton || We are back in the UK!
Today we head out to one of our favourite places in the UK, The Peak District. It's not too far from where we live so we love going out to explore the villages and beautiful surroundings on the weekends. We catch the train from our little home town Retford to Sheffield where we change trains and head on to Hope in Derbyshire, a village in The Peak District.
We walk from Hope to Castleton, across farms and along Peakshole Water before discovering Peveril Castle and the beautiful Cave Dale. It's so refreshing walking in The Peak District and exploring Castleton with its cute shops and cosy pubs.

We had a lovely couple of months back home in Australia and took the time off from creating content and uploading so that we could make the most of our time with our family and friends. So naturally we are quite a bit behind on our upload schedule but we are back in the UK now.

We are Jori and Malika, a couple from Australia living in the U.K., and documenting our adventures all around the world. We publish a weekly travel vlog to share with our friends and family, and we'd love for you to come with us ????
We started Beyond Your Doorstep as a way of documenting our travel so that we could look back on it ourselves. We started off posting photos, and then blogging, and now we vlog basically everywhere we go. We know travel is hard, and it's expensive, so we try and keep it as real as possible. Jori works as an engineer and Malika works as a waitress (*it's weird talking in the 3rd person*) ????We live in a little countryside town in England where we work 9-5 most of the year. We live in a tiny studio apartment and try to keep our costs down as much as possible. We travel whenever we can and edit our vlogs at night and on the weekends. It's a pretty huge workload but we love reliving our adventures as we edit and publish our travel vlogs. We may not be the quintessential digital nomad travel couple, but we love this adventure we're on!
We love seeing new places, experiencing new cultures, and tasting food from all over the world! Join us on our journey exploring this beautiful planet we all call home!

Castleton / Peak Cavern / Mam Tor 2020
We decided to spend a couple of days in Castleton for Libbi's birthday in early January 2020. It was cold but the weather was on our side. It's a great place if you'd like to get away from everything, take in some clear air and wander off to areas in the hills where you can experience real tranquillity.. and at only an hours' drive from Barnsley it's practically on the doorstep.
There are lots of great caves to explore, plenty of countryside, pubs, tea rooms, shops and cafes to check out. This was my first visit, Libbi had been before and we highly recommend it.

Peak District Caving Adventure | Speedwell Cavern
[ Absolute Wild Productions ]
The Speedwell Cavern is one of the four show caves in Castleton, Derbyshire, England. It consists of a horizontal lead miners' adit leading to the cavern itself, a limestone cave. The adit is permanently flooded, resulting in Speedwell Cavern's feature: after descending a long staircase, the visitor makes the journey into the cave by boat. Originally the guide propelled the boat by pushing against the walls with his hands, later the boat was legged through, and now it is powered by an electric motor.
At the end of the adit, the visitor alights from the boat and walks into the cave to see the fluorspar veins, the stalactites and stalagmites, and the so-called Bottomless Pit. This pit is an extremely deep vertical shaft, now choked to within 20 metres (66 ft) of the surface by rock spoil dumped by miners. The original depth of the shaft has been estimated, from the amount of spoil placed in the shaft over the years, at around 150 metres (490 ft).
