Poindexter the Donkey Rescued From Black Forest Fire
Animal Law Enforcement (ALE) officers rescued Poindexter the donkey Monday, June 17, 2013, from the Black Forest Fire. Poindexter has been stranded in the southeast area of the evacuation zone for days and most of the area around him, including land and buildings, had burned. Firefighters were making sure he had water and ALE officers carried in feed. Crews from the Bureau of Land Management were able to cut down trees in the area so ALE could get a horse trailer in on Monday. Poindexter was happy to get some carrot treats but was very nervous and would run away when approached. It took four ALE officers using portable fencing about 15 minutes to corral him. When they got him close to the trailer, Poindexter walked right in. Two of Poindexter's llama friends were rescued by ALE officers a few days earlier and taken to the El Paso County Fairgrounds. They could be heard humming when Poindexter was placed in the corral next to them.
